"Great place to stay for experiencing the peaks."
The cottage was clean, we equipped and great village setting.
"Very pleasant stay in a nice village."
"We enjoyed our stay and had everything we needed."
The garden was a lovely relaxing space apart from the day the neighbour decided to do some DIY by his outbuilding playing loud music All the rooms felt a bit cluttered with furniture. The towel rail fell off the wall in the front bedroom en suite as soon as a towel was placed on it. Water poured through the closed kitchen window nearest the dining room during heavy rain
"Hi we loved both Ivy cottage and Hartington."
The cottage was a perfect combination of an old picturesque cottage with every modern facility. Lovely to have 3 ensuites all with great showers ..There were clear instructions for all appliances which was very helpful. I loved the pretty garden too . It was good to be in the centre of the village with shops selling most everything you needed and great walks from the village my favourite was along the river and dales.
"As on previous visits we found the cottage clean and tidy on arrival and suited our requirements."
"We had a really good stay at Ivy Cottage, it was a lovely house: the beds were super comfortable and bedrooms all having en-suites was great."
We were without heating for a night but this was remedied swiftly with calls with the owner on Easter Sunday which was appreciated. A small suggestion would be just to have things like oil, salt and pepper in the kitchen to help with cooking rather than having to purchase every little thing to make a meal. Many thanks. I will definitely recommend Ivy Cottage to friends coming to the area.
"The location of ivy cottage could not have been better, so close to all the village amenities."
The garden was secure and perfect for our two dogs. There was a hose outside to deal with muddy paws. The cottage was warm and comfortable and very well equipped which made cooking at home a pleasure. We did eat in both pubs and enjoyed the meals but felt there could have been a better choice of vegetables on the menu, (generally only salad, peas or mushy peas). Having two tvs was a bonus. There were walks from the door including Biggindale and Wolfscotedale but also the options of walking the Manifold and Tissington Trails when wanting to avoid the inevitable March mud and live stock with our dogs. In all a very enjoyable week. Patsy, Rob, Basil and Polly
"A lovely cottage, cosy, clean & great location."
Just a couple of very little comments that would make a big difference especially considering the price paid. We had elderly folks with us so the first 4 comments effected them 1. Downstairs loo didn’t flush 2. Front bedroom loo was difficult to flush 3. DVD no HDMI or scat so couldn’t operate 4. Anti slip mats and a grab rail over one of the baths would be beneficial 5. Steps in the kitchen to reach shelves would be safer than balancing on a chair! 6. Provision of cleaning products, extra cloth and bin bags would be useful. Other than those few things we had a great stay.
"A very nice cottage but there are no grab rails on the walls of the bath/shower for us older folk."
Also fan in front bathroom will not switch off. The curtain rail in back bedroom is broken. There is a hole in the firegrate and ash pan. The TV in the dining room seems permanently tuned to Samsung TV with no way to access normal channels so pretty useless. These are minor things in an otherwise well maintained cottage.
"Lovely, comfortable, quaint cottage."
Was lovely and warm too, especially when we lit the fire! Was a perfect location for visiting all the lovely villages in the Peak District.
"Just such a very comfortable old cottage full of nick knacks that gave the cottage a very homely feel."
It’s in the centre of Hartington a stones throw from the shops and pubs. Good walks from the doorstep and dog friendly. Would certainly recommend this cottage

As we are of a certain age it would be nice to have a grab rail in both baths to help getting in and out otherwise perfect
"Another super week staying at Ivy Cottage."
very comfortable and well equipped, local amenities are excellent, and we were blessed with super weather
"We loved the location."
The en-suite bedrooms were great. Loved the little but lovely garden. Thought the sitting room was in need of a freshen up and tight if you were the full 6 in occupancy. Always find that the kitchen as in this case doesn’t include decent sharp knives and we do cook. Also as a 5 ft tall person the glasses were on top shelf in a cupboard over the dishwasher so had to climb on a chair to reach. Being picky but we paid what we felt was quite a lot of money for this cottage. So small changes would make it great.
"Lovely cottage in the centre of the village, had a real homely charm."
Garden was a sun trap and enjoyed sitting out in the afternoons. Great location for exploring the Monsal and Tissington trails.
"We had a great stay, thank you."
The house is in a perfect location. It is lovely inside. Ideal, really. We would certainly go back.
"Beautiful character cottage in a brilliant location."
Spacious, really well appointed and comfortable with everything we needed for the week, especially in the kitchen. The village is picture postcard with two great pubs which do good food (recommend booking though as gets busy), couple of general stores plus an amazing cheese shop. There’s a mobile fish and chip van on a Fri which we used and everyone was very friendly and helpful. For hikers/ walkers the location is fantastic, both for walks from the village itself and circulars starting a short drive away. We will definitely be coming back!
"This is a lovely cottage right in the middle of Hartington."
It had an extremely well equipped kitchen. The lounge is comfortable and a great place to people watch after a long day walking. The beds were also very comfortable. Charming back garden. We will definitely recommend to friends and family and we will return.
"A very pretty cottage in the middle of a lovely Peak district village."
Well equipped and very comfortable with all facilities close at hand. Great area for walks with dog or without. Would certainly recommend this cottage.
"Lovely cottage on the village green in a super wee village"
"Stunning cottage in the perfect location."
A surprisingly spacious and clearly loved home which provided my family a fantastic holiday base. A great place to return to after a day exploring all the delights the Peaks have to offer. The owner was very pleasant and welcoming and the cottage was packed with a wealth of facilities to enhance our stay.
"We had a wonderful stay at ivy cottage."
There was everything we needed for a multigenerational family holiday. We’ll definitely be booking again
So sorry about the problem with the macerator that you mentioned in the visitors book. We have had it mended very recently! We will get it fixed again this week while we are staying here ourselves. Hope it didn't keep you awake. So pleased you had a good time otherwise. Property Owner
"A very comfortable 3rd stay in cosy Ivy Cottage."
"This lovely warm cottage is well equipped and in a wonderful position in the charming village of Hartington."
there are a few good shops and pubs so everything you need is there. Also good walks from the village.
Ideal for 4 single adults. Very well equipped. Lovely garden enabling us to sit out for meals. We were surprised to find cushions, games, throws etc there as we had been informed by Sykes that these things would have been removed.
"It was lovely and warm and the style was was tastefully furnished."
Good washing facilities
"A superb cottage in a perfect location in the wonderful village of Hartington."
Ideal for walkers, cyclists and those who want to visit places such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Tissington and the towns of Bakewell, Matlock , Buxton and Ashbourne. Hartington provides shops, two good pubs which provide meals, a Friday fish and chip van and the famous Hartington Cheese Shop.
"Lovely cottage and very well equipped."
The beds are particularly comfortable. The village of Hartington has good amenities and is surrounded by fantastic walking country. The Charles Cotton Hotel in the village is worth a visit for a meal, very pleasant atmospheres and staff are very accomadating.
"We stayed in this cottage for 1 week and it was perfectly located."
It is in the heart of Hartington, which has a variety of well-stocked local shops and 2 good pubs (1 being a hotel). There is a parking space outside the front door, but all parking in the village is free and usually there are plenty of spaces. The house is spacious and the 3 bedrooms - 1 king, 1 double and 1 twin - all have their own bathrooms. As there were only two of us, we used the back king size room and the bed was fantastically comfortable. There is a downstairs loo, which is adjacent to the spacious hallway. Washing machine facilities are in the basement. The living room is cosy, with 2 x 2 seat sofas and 2 armchairs. There is an open fire place for chillier evenings. The dining room has enough space for larger families and the kitchen is well stocked with crockery etc. The enclosed garden is particularly pretty and is visited by small, interesting birds. The neighbours have access rights to the bins. Be aware that the garden gate closes securely, but has no lock. You can pop across to the pond and cheese shop, from here. The gardener comes each week, usually on a Tuesday. There are some great local walks from the cottage, so if you didn't want to use the car too much it is ideal. I would certainly recommend staying in this fabulous cottage.
"Lovely traditionally decorated cosy cottage in a great setting close to local amenities."
The walks were just stunning. Although the information sent on retrieving the back door key was accurate, there were no details on how to use the front electronic entry system. We managed to work it out with the help of the couple who were renting the next door cottage who were having the same problems! Information left in cottage was very useful except could not work out how to use the hob and had to Google it!! The back garden was small but lovely, however it would have been good to know that it was shared access with the next door rental, especially as we had 2 dogs. Not the cleanest as fridge and kitchen cupboard shelves not been wiped down and our dog found things under the chairs and drawers and we found a pair of underpants behind the cupboard in the dressing room. The beds were very comfy, showers good and kitchen was excellently equipped. These aside really enjoyed the stay.
"A lovely and well equipped cottage in a stunning setting with a small courtyard garden and private parking."
Local village shop is well stocked but the farm shop at Stanedge Grange a few miles away is well worth seeking out for their amazing meat and pies and extensive range of veggies. Bakewell, Buxton and Chatsworth all near by and lovely medium grade walks directly from the cottage. Avoid the Devonshire Arms pub, bad service, limited choice and poor quality 'cheap' fried food. The Charles Cotton pub is far superior!
"The house wasn't cleaned to a very high standard, for example, a small quantity of urine left in a child's potty, melted plastic on the oven shelves, dirty kitchen cupboards and drawers."
The garden although lovely, would be more dog friendly with a bigger back gate or bolt on it. Lovely location, excellent pubs.
"A lovely cottage in a perfect village location."
Local pub, walks and shops all perfect.
"There were no instructions about how to find the key safe."
It took us nearly half an hour in the dark and rain to locate the key safe as it involved going through a gate at the back of the terrace of cottages and then into the back garden. Luckily we had torches on our phones but we spent some time in the neighbours garden before realising it wasn’t the right property. It also took some time to work out how and where to turn on the hot water and it would have been nice if this had been done before we arrived. Not a great start to our holiday. Other than that the cottage was wonderful. A fantastic location with pubs and shops on the doorstep and beautiful walking in the dales. The cottage was extremely well equipped and the beds were very comfortable.
"Cottage was really lovely, great location and everything needed for a wonderful break."
Only minor thing is as we stayed just before Christmas, a Christmas tree would have been perfect! Would definitely stay here again.
"This cottage was ideally located in the centre of the village of Hartington which has shops, pubs and walks from the door."
Very warm and equipped with everything you need.
"Ivy cottage gave us the perfect base for exploring Dove Dale and the rest of the Peak District."
The cottage was ideal for us with every home comfort, each bedroom having an en-suite and a lovely little garden to sit outside. The cottage is at the heart of the village, great for enjoying village life, including the two pubs and the small shops.
"Directions to cottage - non were given on information sent out."
Cottage was great, plastic dining room table chairs were totally out of character with the rest of the cottage furniture
"We had a really good time however we found the dining chairs uncomfortable and not in keeping ( we are a family who like to sit and play cards all evening) the kitchen has everything you could possibly want."
parking was easy, the village is idyllic, it felt just like our own home. i have already recommended to a friend
Wonderful cottage and beautiful garden. The cottage was very well equipped and well presented. An excellent choice!
"We had a fantastic long weekend over the Easter break staying in this cottage, with friends."
It's in a great location, right in the centre of Hartington and we were able to start our walks from the cottage and didn't have to drive anywhere. Hartington is a beautiful village with a tea room, shops and pub (although under renovation at the moment). The cottage it's self was perfect for our group of 6 adults, 2 dogs and had everything we needed. We had 3 out of our 4 dinners in and the kitchen was well stocked for that, with pots and pans. We were happy to stay in as the cottage was so homely and it also has a lovely south facing garden. The only thing missing was a BBQ, however we could have purchased a disposable one from the village shop, if we had wanted. Thank you for allowing us to stay here and we would love to stay here again.
"A gorgeous cottage in a beautiful old market town, excellent facilities in the cottage and also in the small town."
The cottage is perfectly positioned for enjoying the wonderful Derbyshire and Staffordshire countryside with great walks and cycling routes from the front door. There are plenty of towns to visit on the doorstep, Buxton, Bakewell (market day is Monday) and Ashbourne. As well as Haddon and Chatsworth Halls, a hidden gem is Thornbridge Hall gardens just 8 miles away. Having three en-suites in the cottage was a dream ad it felt like a tardis! The small garden is walled and a sun trap ( when the sun appeared). Finding the entrance into the back garden on arrival to collect the key caused a few minor issues. Clearer instructions, such as; "To the right of the property behind Corner House there is a blue gate. Go through this gate to the back of Ivy Cottage." The Yale key lock in the front door needs fixing as this is loose and difficult to use. These are only very minor issues. The cottage was perfect and we look forward to visiting again.
"The cottage was lovely thank you, a fantastic base to explore the area and we hope to go again next year."
"Lovely cottage in the heart of the Peak District in the village of Hartington,Two pubs,Cheese Shop, two shops, farm shop and tea rooms Lovely cottage in the centre of the village Fully fitted out with a new kitchen Only two small suggestions a second settee in the lounge although there is one settee and four seats, also a newer Hoover Lovely cottage in a lovely part of the U."
"Very comfortable cottage and we loved the location with such good walks from the door and the village shops , cafe and pubs so near."
For dog owners it’s worth noting that the rear garden , although secure, has a shared gate ( not visible from the back door) which someone left open on “bins out” day. We hadn’t noticed until our dog seemed to be taking a long time to come in that evening - found him some distance away exploring the village!
"Only fire in living room works."
No wood or coal or kindling provided. Was a nice weekend break. Owners left good information pack and beds were very comfortable.
"A lovely cottage, in a lovely village."
Cottage was clean, and the welcome pack was greatly received. Having en-suite to every bedroom was very well received, as we were three couples. The enclosed garden was great for our two dogs. We had a great time at Christmas at Chatsworth as well. Lots of good walks from the village. We can really recommend this holiday cottage
"Very nice overall, no specific negatives."
One light missing in bathroom of master bedroom and no shower mat in other double room. Minor issues really, would happily stay here again.
"A beautiful cottage in lovely surroundings and set in a village with very good facilities, my only concern was the busy road in front of the property as vehicles passed far too quickly, other than that it was a lovely holiday."
"We had an absolutely fantastic week in this gem of a property."
This is the first time we've ever had this type of holiday - normally opting to holiday abroad. We decided to try a holiday cottage where we could take our dogs for a change and would definitely recommend this cottage and the fantastic location. It was central to many of the beautiful parts of the peak district and even though we live relatively locally, we were able to visit places we would never normally have had the time to go to. The cottage itself was absolutely perfect, full of character and also very spacious and well equipped, with a lovely back garden. Would definitely visit again and recommend Sykes Cottages for their ease and choice of booking.

A charming stone terrace cottage, located in the heart of the village of Hartington, a stone's throw from Dove Valley in the glorious Peak District.
A lovely garden sits at the front of the house, overlooking the marketplace, with a few pubs located right on the doorstep.
This is the ideal spot for families and friends who wish to spend time together in one of the most pleasant villages in the area.
The cottage is set over three floors with very traditional, vintage characteristics.
There are three cosy bedrooms, all of which have en-suite bathrooms, one of the second floor bedrooms also has a dressing room.
The twin room is on the third floor with light streaming in from the skylight above.
Head to the dining area where an old Rangemaster is on display, leading to the fully-equipped kitchen area and outside to the delightful back garden.
Relax on the comfy sofa in the sitting room and light the stove during the colder months, or simply look out onto the front lawn and local market.
The beautiful village of Hartington offers some of the very best walking trails to be explored.
Just South of Hartington is Wolfscote Hill, a great spot for picturesque countryside views.
About seven miles away is Hadden Hall, a medieval and Tudor manor house and a popular location choice for various film and TV broadcasts, complete with a restaurant and gift shop.
These are just a couple of the many places to venture to in the surrounding area of this quaint, heart-warming home-from-home.
About the location
- Bakewell 10 miles
- Buxton 10 miles
Hartington, situated in the Dove Valley in the Peak District National Park, was an important market centre in the Middle Ages, having been granted a market charter in 1203. Today the ever-popular village boasts lovely tea rooms, a cheese shop, old curiosity shops, traditional pubs and a splendid market square where the stone-carved village pump, once an important source of water for the villagers, still stands on the green. The local bars stock local ales brewed at the Leatherbritches Brewery in Fenny Bentley and Whim Ales in Hartington itself. The former Hartington railway station, about a mile and half from the village itself, is now a picnic area and the converted track is known as the Tissington Trail, popular with both walkers and cyclists. Hartington is also a good starting point for walking along Beresford Dale, a beautiful place with its curiously formed cliffs and rocks. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both within a 20 minute drive, and Alton Towers is within easy reach.
Please note that, although the garden belongs to Ivy Cottage, the neighbours do have access through the gate just for the bins which are kept in the garden.
