  • "We had a wonderful couple of days at The Old Stables."

Wish we could have stayed longer. The accommodation is beautiful and luxurious. The beds were very comfy (loved the quilt and pillows) and it had everything you would need for a relaxing holiday. Thank you for all your help Lesley, particularly for the extra half hour check out time.

  • "Hi, Thanks again for a great stay Lesley ☺️ we have been very impressed by the old stables and it was a lovely space to celebrate my 30th birthday."

It was very clean and comfortable. We appreciated the flexibility with early check in and late check out times, and that you came to fix the heated towel rail in the bathroom. In future if we were to stay again it would be helpful to have more glasses in particular flutes for prosecco, and milk/bread for breakfast. It was also difficult to separate recycling as the outside recycling bins were filled up with water and incorrect rubbish from previous guests. We overall had a very enjoyable stay though and will be recommending this to friends and family! Best wishes Ollie Heathcock

  • "We had a very nice week here with our 3 teenage grandchildren, however it probably wasn’t the best location for them as apart from walks there isn’t much going on and we would have been better in Matlock itself or Bakewell where they could have gone off on their own to the shops etc."

The Wi-Fi wasn’t very good in the bedrooms and the TV was very basic but we all made the best of it as it is a delightful cottage and the owners who live next door are lovely. Just a couple of constructive suggestions would be for more lighting in the kitchen which is very dark and a new dishwasher.

  • "Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting."

The little things matter! Wine, cake and a very important bottle of milk in the fridge. We had taken dish washing materials but, again, these had been thoughtfully provided. The standard of everything in the cottage was very high and easily accommodated 4 adults, 1 child and an infant. A cot and high chair had been provided too. The cottage certainly outdoes the photos. Perfectly located for all the places we wanted to visit in Derbyshire. Thankyou to Lesley.

Beds were comfortable, lots of comfy seating and nice furnishings. Nice to be able to read about the history of the cottage and surroundings too. Easy to find following very clear instructions. The owner was easy to contact and friendly and was really quick to help with queries. A plumbing accident was dealt with promptly and with minimum fuss. All in all a lovely cottage that I wouldn’t hesitate to return to or recommend to others.

This is an exceptional, well maintained property with lots of space for a family get together, there were 4 generations of us ranging from 23 months to 87 years old and we never felt overcrowded. The remote location is peaceful and relaxing. Chesterfield is a 15 minute drive away. The only suggestion I would have would be to consider investment in an electric car charger for the property (the nearest rapid chargers are in Chesterfield)

  • "Property perfectly located for walkers."

Lots of public footpaths in the area. Easy to find. Nice helpful owners. Hugely spacious interior and exterior. Cosmetically charming. Garden has large table with plenty of seating. Parking is good. We took two cars and had no issues. Mostly quiet with the exception of a repetitive beeping coming from the security keypad of the adjacent property. Very annoying at night when windows are open. Nice welcome note and complimentary bottle of wine and cake etc. Including 10% off in local farm shop cafe. Which was also high quality and well stocked. Kitchen facilities were brilliant. Plenty of crockery and cutlery. Dishwasher and washer dryer easy to use. 'Sharp' Knives on the blunt side (no suprise for rented accommodation). Cooker is amazing. Double oven excellent. Plenty of food/drink storage. Plenty of seating around dining area. Very spacious and comfortable. Huge living room. Plenty of seating. Very comfortable and cozy. Living room TV on the small side for such a large room. Awful sound quality. Free to view TV is good. Internet connection poor, bit of a let down for accommodation that sleeps so many, but understandable given property location. Downstairs shower nice and spacious. Shower screen allows water to splash everywhere, meaning wet floor and foot towel. Nice soaps and lotions. Tap is a bit leaky. Front door very difficult to open and close. Used back door instead. Somewhat of a potential fire hazard, but understandable given the recent extremes of temperature in UK. Bedrooms spacious. Beds and bedding comfortable. Odd number of TVs in rooms, but we didn't expect any, so still a nice suprise. Shared/family bathroom is very big. Toilet cistern seems to be running however. Had to adjust ballcock a few times to remedy this. Ensuite is lovely. Nice big bath. Plenty of hot water on supply. Outlet drains a bit slow. From the outside there appears to be a wasp nest in the guttering between master bedroom with Ensuite and double bedroom. Wasps left us alone, but could be heard in the dressing area of the master with Ensuite. Not a huge issue, worth mentioning as sometimes structural issues can result. 09:30 checkout and being asked to strip all beds is a little early and s little odd. Not something we've experienced before. Overall a lovely and restful stay in a beautiful, comfortable, clean property and environment.

We all felt covid safe. Owners extremely accommodating and friendly. Perfect location and a good base for touring the area. Thank you for the welcome pack - especially the lemon drizzle cake. We found the freezer and especially the fridge to be far too small. As the cottage accommodates 8 people there should be a much larger fridge as we could not get all the provisions we had brought with us in. Only one side of the toaster was working and the other side takes ages to toast. These are purely comments which perhaps could be taken on board and certainly do not distract from the excellent accommodation.

.. Had a wonderful time, the kids loved it too. It's been very nicely converted and the grounds are magnificent. Lesley is lovely and very communicative. I gave it four out five primarily because check out time was 9:30am on the Sunday morning. I've never had to check out so early in my many times using Sykes and other accommodation websites. Lesley explained that there was another booking due on the day we left, but check in isn't until 4:30, so we all felt 7 hours turn around time to be a bit unnecessary, even during these Covid times. Otherwise, excellent!

Marsh Green Hall

Marsh Green Hall dates back to the 15th century and its history is linked to the Civil War. The stable block has been converted and is idyllically-placed on the edge of the small village of Ashover, five miles from the popular tourist town of Matlock. Situated in the hall’s grounds, along with the owner’s property, the two semi-detached properties have been meticulously renovated to a beautiful standard throughout. Retaining some exposed internal stone walls and timbers, both properties exude quality, with handcrafted, country-style kitchens boasting granite worktops, Belfast sinks and range cookers. The sitting rooms are comfortable and spacious with wood grain flooring, leather sofas and tasteful furnishings. Both properties offer contemporary bathrooms with an en-suite, a separate family bathroom and an additional ground floor cloakroom. With ample off road parking and private gardens showcasing views over open, private parkland and countryside, the properties provide excellent holiday homes with all modern comforts. A short stroll brings you to the four local inns and village shops, whilst golfers can enjoy a round on the 9-hole course in nearby Stonedge or on the Matlock golf courses. Ashover is one of the country’s largest parishes and has an extensive footpath network, with all routes coming back to the village. The surrounding area is wonderful for walking and cycling, or touring the pretty market towns and popular tourist attractions. Nearby Matlock, with its warm springs, offers interesting, independent shops, restaurants and tempting tea rooms, with Leys Hall Park providing a lovely setting for recreational activities such as bowls, tennis and boating. Chatsworth House and gardens are about 20 minutes’ drive away and Hardwick Hall and Haddon Hall are also both well worth a trip. With Crich Tramway Museum and Matlock Bath close by, there's a wealth of activities for all. For birdwatchers and nature lovers, you can enjoy taking a walk around Carsington Water along well defined paths. Both lovely properties really do sit in a delightful area of Derbyshire.
