  • "If we had read a review from September we might have had second thoughts about booking this cottage."

But we're glad we went. The previous review was only a few weeks before our visit, so you have to give the owner credit for responsiveness: the tap was fixed; there was a second set of knives (although we always bring our own); and the sofa felt fine, perhaps that was also new. Traffic noise can be an issue, but if you judge it as a cottage near the town centre it's not serious. There was little significant noise between the last bus at 10ish and the school run, and we only once heard voices outside. We found the rooms warm enough, but don't forget your slippers / indoor footwear. There's a notice requesting no shoes indoors, but it's uncomfortable on stockinged feet in the kitchen and living room. There's nothing but a carport underneath. And one quirk - the red light (sic) in the living room looks good, but it's not great when 2 of you need task lighting. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Many thanks for your review on Victoria House, all feedback is greatly appreciated. So pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "In general, the house was clean, tidy and superficially well presented."

Lots of big cushions, reed diffusers and plug in air fresheners. Decor is many shades of greys and creams. Plenty of modern style side lights and hairdryers!!! The fixtures an fittings are not of the best quality; although they are not old, they have not worn well. We had an immediate issue with the kitchen sink tap as the lever action broke off in my hand. My husband refitted it, contacted the owner who sent over her son to temporarily mend it with packing tape. As we had booked for 2 weeks, we were concerned that it wouldn’t last the fortnight, but managed to nurse it through, but it was on it’s way out by the end of the holiday. We are very careful people, I would imagine a different outcome for a family! The heating was not adequate. It’s controlled by a Hive unit, but the boiler is obviously pre-set to a low temperature, so nothing higher than 22.5 seemed possible even though the Hive registered the numbers! Would hate to be here in the colder months! The location of the house has one good point! The town centre is 2 minutes walk from the house, so everything is accessible very readily on foot. The drawback to the location is the fact the house is on a rat run between the main roads in and out of Holmfirth. Above the house is Station Road with never ending traffic and heavy goods vehicles at all times. The other end of Bridge Lane leads into the Huddersfield Road, a main route. Bridge Lane itself is very short and extremely steep with very sharp access bends! As mentioned, there is another constant stream of traffic trying to use Bridge Lane. It is a very narrow road, and not suitable for passing another vehicle on. The saving grace was the wide apron of a drive-on area by the car port. Fortunately, we always managed to get onto this area before having problems with other vehicles. I don’t think renting this property would be possible without the private parking. The traffic on each side of the house makes it very noisy. We live in a cul de sac in a very quiet area, so notice any traffic. Other people may be less concerned about traffic volumes; but it was a problem for us. Other niggles were: very few TV channels available, although we found iplayer, so that helped on the odd night in the house, sofa very saggy already, so uncomfortable. The bathroom had no towel rails, so had to use the radiator to hang them on and no hooks on the door for garments while showering. No shelving in the bathroom. No hooks on any of the doors. No towel rails in the kitchen either. The cutlery provided was of such poor design we had to buy our own knives in order to cut up any meat etc! Sorry, didn’t leave them nor leave our dustpan and brush either! We liked being able to walk into the town centre which is very lively, full of good quality cafes, interesting independent shops and really quirky alleys, steps, paths, a pretty river and friendly people. Sorry to sound a cautionary note about the property, but the drawbacks were too many for us. Nothing can be done about the location, but we feel the issues were not pointed out to potential renters in the description. Just writing that there may be some traffic noise is not sufficient! The lady in the adjoining house is very quiet, so no noise there!! The area around Holmfirth is beautiful with wonderful walking wherever you go. Huddersfield is terrific and close by, as is the Peak District and The Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The National Coal Mining Museum.

Thank you for your review and feedback. Pleased you enjoyed the local area, independent shops and restaurants. I am so sorry to hear the property wasn’t up to your standard. We always want the best for our guests and appreciate any feedback. Any concerns are taken seriously and we try address them. Whilst we have tried our best to accommodate everyone, we hope you understand this isn’t always possible. Unfortunately the kitchen tap handle was loose for yourselves and had to be temporarily repaired on a Sunday. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. The tap has now been replaced with a new one by our plumber. We are very disappointed regarding the issue you experienced with the heating which is set by a hive and is scheduled to come on to a reasonable temperature at regularly times during the day ie early morning, late afternoon and evening. This can be adjusted by guests whenever in the property. There is no maximum temperature set ! Not sure what is meant by the saggy sofa, I will take a look at it, never had a complaint regarding this before fortunately with many guests returning. Sadly you felt the Property is on a rat run. Victoria House is situated a few minutes from Holmfirth centre with all amenities close by. It does clearly state road noise on the website ! Bridge Lane can get busy during rush hour and especially when local events are taking place, on the occasion of this visit it was Holmfirth food and drink festival which attracts lots of visitors/tourists to the area ! Holmfirth is a popular location and most guests appreciate all the local facilities however if peace and quiet of countryside is preferred maybe the heart of Holmfirth is not the right location to choose. The property doesn’t have sky but does have a smart tv with freeview and apps built in ie Netflix, Disney+, iPlayer, prime etc Thank you for bringing the cutlery to my attention ! Sorry you didn’t find the dustpan and brush this is hanging in the under stairs cupboard along with the mop and vacuum cleaner ! There are many hooks/hanging areas in the property, in bedrooms, the entrance hall, under stairs cupboard, 1 in the bathroom just outside the shower and a towel radiator in the bathroom. We are reluctant to have back of door hooks as this leaves a bigger chance for guests losing belongings. I thought the photos on the website clearly demonstrated our home and the location. About the location

HOLMFIRTH

Peak District National Park 3 miles; Meltham 4 miles

The old traditional Pennine town of Holmfirth is situated in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, on the edge of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Made famous by The Last of The Summer Wine TV series, there is more to Holmfirth than Compo and Nora Battye’s stockings! The ‘Picturedrome’, the North of England’s finest live music venue attracts many famous bands and is located right in the centre of the town. The pelotons from the Tour de France 2014 and the Tour de Yorkshire have both been through this quaint Holme Valley town en route to the iconic 524 metre Holme Moss climb two miles away. It is in these hills where cycling’s triple Olympic Medalist Ed Clancy grew up. Holmfirth also has a good public swimming pool and fitness centre, parks and some super shops and restaurants. The people here are friendly, the streets are quaint and the scenery is breathtaking. The Peak District National Park with its moors, dales, forests, lakes and reservoirs is also easily accessible. The Upper Derwent Valley, home to the spectacular Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs, and where the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron practiced the audacious bombing raid on the Ruhr valley in 1943, is only a short scenic drive away. Slightly further is Chatsworth, the stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and situated close to the market town of Bakewell, the home of Bakewell Puddings. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The National Coal Mining Museum, Wentworth Castle, and the Hepworth Gallery are also within short drives away and well worth a visit. For a spot of culture, Holmfirth has annual festivals with many more attractions that bring visitors back for more; such as the Folk, Arts, and Food & Drink Festivals. Also not to be missed, is Holmfirth Vineyard and Restaurant, where you can book wine tasting tours and enjoy a lovely meal in the restaurant.
