  • "Lovely property, perfect size for my partner and I."

Cosy, clean and lots of character. We enjoied using the log burner and relaxing after our days out. The cottage is close to local amenities, without feeling like your sacrificing the desire to get away from it all. Its also a stones throw from beautiful places to visit. Easy parking and no hassle using the key safe and letting our selves in.

  • "The cottage was beautiful but we were extremely disappointed and shocked to find that the Hope beer festival (which the owners confirmed they knew about) was going on outside the front door in a fixed venue open air marque for the entire four days of our stay."

Whilst the listing refers to the fact that the property is next door to a pub it does not mention the fixed marque located in the pub car park only a few feet from the property front door. We checked the pub website and the visitor book and it is clear that the marquee hosts live music events on an ongoing regular basis and has done for at least the last six months if not longer. It was clear from the visitor book that guests staying at the property previously have also complained about this issue but the owner has chosen to disregard these complaints and not let people staying know or mention it in the listing. We are not complainers and have no issue being located next to a pub, or with occasional noise. However this was four days and four nights of live music, playing at a volume that meant we couldn’t hear the TV. We think it’s important that future visitors to the cottage are informed either at the time or in advance of them booking and it should also be mentioned in the listing that the marque (not the pub itself) is situated right outside the house and that the pub hosts live music event in it. We consider it to be a dereliction of duty for any cottage owner and renting agent who are aware of the existence of the marque and live events not to mention it to prospective renters and we are extremely unhappy that it was not mentioned to us at the time we made our booking (despite the owner being aware). Unfortunately the level and extent of the noise of the live bands meant that we had to go out for the entire four days meaning we could not enjoy the cottage as we had hoped.

Thank you for your feedback unfortunately they are many untruths to your feedback. The margue is not a fixed venue and is only there such as beer festivals on some bank holiday weekends. We have had no previous complaints, feedback have been positive stating that they enjoyed the vibe and the buzz. Regarding the noise levels it's a country pub in a rural location with a cow farm 70 yards from the pub. We have never received complaints regarding noise levels. Disappointed that you choose to complain on a Sunday evening your last night 15 minutes before midnight when you was vacating the next morning. Your stay was over a bank holiday weekend which obviously is going to be busier than a normal weekend. The weekend in question we did not know any event was scheduled as you claim. Property Owner

Owners extremely helpful. A super location especially out of season whilst the village is quieter. Good choice of shops and eateries and all the people we met were very welcoming and friendly (adjourning pub and tea-room very good). Fantastic walks from the door. Beautiful Castleton just a short walk away. I would suggest as one of the other people mentioned. That the property is overdue a little TLC. A re-paint here and there and a few other things need attention as all homes require after time, however, this would not prevent me from re-booking this property again in the future.

A lovely property in a great location with the added bonus of off road parking. Just a couple of little things - the bathroom now needs a little bit of TLC, ie. there was no toilet seat lid & in general needs a bit of attention. The floor covering in the kitchen didn't seem to fit properly. However, these were minor issues & we really enjoyed our stay, Thank you.

For those who enjoy all the facilities of a lovely Peak District village (Lively pub, local shop, Church etc) this couldn't have been a better place. The cottage is bordered on 2 sides by the beer garden of the pub next door, and so for those who want to enjoy a meal and drink out, this cottage is perfectly situated, but guests must be prepared for noise, especially in the mornings when many deliveries are being made. Having said all this, we had a lovely stay and made the most of being so close to facilities.

Parking is limited on the streets so having a parking space was essential. The garden is enclosed and safe for young families although the photo is old and suggests otherwise. Recycling information would be handy, along with the option of putting the bins out. This is something we do at home and feel that we should comply elsewhere. Old hall barn is such a lovely place to stay and visit the hope valley. Walks are from the doorstep and pubs are in plentiful supply - so no cooking required!

  • "This cottage is charming and cosy, in a fantastic location."

Hope is a bustling village with a good selection of cafes! The pub literally next door is very handy but not too noisy. It has spaced out tables outside for social distancing and staff all wearing visors. The hot water went during our stay but the owners got it fixed very quickly so it was no problem. We had a lovely stay but would recommend a bigger outdoor bin, as a family of 4 self catering a lot we had a lot of nappies and rubbish every day! Also bring some toilet rolls with you as 2 not enough for a week. The garden is safe and secure, ideal for kids and the view of the peaks is lovely and peaceful. We enjoyed hearing the cows on the field next door, luckily we were already up at 5am with the baby as they’re pretty loud!! If you have a baby, bring your own cot and high chair. There’s loads to do for families close by, in addition to all the hiking, including Hathersage outdoor pool (prebook), Thorpe farm (Hope valley ice cream where you can see cows being milked by a machine) and in Matlock the Heights of Abraham and Gullivers kingdom are super fun. Don’t forget your masks!

  • "The barn was very much as advertised, and, importantly for a very cold weekend, the central heating worked most effectively and was straightforward to control."

The fridge freezer was also a good size. The only negative was the level of clutter. Every surface and most cupboards were full - it was really difficult to find space for our things. A self catering cottage should leave plenty of room in the kitchen for provisions, and plenty of work surface free for preparation. Similarly, the sitting room should have space for our clutter - we had to move lots of ornaments (some floor standing and heavy), old magazines, and even unnecessary seats, in order to find space for us to spread out. That said, the location was perfect, the seats and beds were comfortable, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay
