  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Wainrights Retreat!"

The house itself is on a quiet back street. We had no issues parking on street outside the front door and no traffic noise. It’s well cared for on the outside (lovely front door and hanging baskets) and lovingly newly refurbished inside. Two spacious bedrooms with original beams and old original stone wall in the attic bedroom. Real bonus was the option of having twin beds in the attic room for our teenagers! All beds were very comfortable. The decor is fresh and tasteful throughout and the house was immaculately clean. Very well equipped especially the kitchen and we found it warm and cosy! ( particularly with underfloor heating in open plan lounge/kitchen diner). Kitchen has a washer/dryer if you needed to do laundry on a longer stay. Wifi and 3 TVs suited our family with teenagers! Owner was very helpful and offered local advice on the area. Marsden itself is a great little village with warm friendly people in the shops, bakery and pubs. Enjoyed a delicious pizza at Mozzerellas literally a couple of minutes walk away and drinks at the Riverhead Brewery Tap. To be honest everything in the village was only a short walking distance away from the house! We enjoyed a country walk in the local area and along the canal. Also a visit into Leeds 45 mins away. Wish we could have stayed longer really! Would love to visit again in the future!

The property

Settled in the heart of the picture-postcard town of Marsden, in the Colne Valley of West Yorkshire is this fabulous, mid-terrace cottage, Wainwrights Retreat.

Once part of the set for the beloved television series, 'Last of The Summer Wine', a filming camera was mounted on top of the cottage to film Aunty Wainwrights shop, which is opposite.

Wainwrights Retreat provides a marvellous base for a family of four who want to explore the West Yorkshire country, from the Peak District National Park to the Bronte Country.

The property enjoys access to on-street parking, where you can leave your vehicle before taking in those marvellous views of the surrounding village and distant moorland.

Head inside to be welcomed by a stylish open-plan living space, beautifully-finished to a high standard, where a sofa awaits for you to lounge on as you watch an entertaining show on the Smart TV.

After enjoying a moment of relaxation, progress to the kitchen, a well-presented space that hosts a great selection of appliances, including an integrated dishwasher and a washing machine.

Once the foodie of the group has cooked up a storm, enjoy an indulgent meal at the dining table with bench seating, so all the family can enjoy the meal together with ease.

When day turns to night, climb the stairs to the first floor to find a tastefully furnished double bedroom that enjoys deep purple touches, along with its own Smart TV and access to a nearby bathroom.

Progress upstairs again to find a marvellous super-king-size room, with preserved features, including exposed beams and brickwork, giving the space a rustic feel, whilst also boasting elevated views of the countryside and its own Smart TV.

A short walk from your doorstep will bring you into the centre of the quaint village of Marsden, where the streets are decorated with limestone buildings and rich industrial heritage, here you'll find a wealth of eateries and pubs for you to dine in, along with a selection of independent shops dotted along the high street.

Find the local pub, The Shakespeare, just 100 meters away from the property, where you can catch a spot of live sport served alongside a traditional Yorkshire welcome.

Soak in the sights with a walk along the banks of the River Colne and enjoy the numerous walks, biking opportunities and outdoor activities on your doorstep.

The town isn't far from the sites of Marsden Moor, a National Trust nature reserve stretching miles of open moorland and craggy peaks, the perfect setting for a two-footed adventure, a golf club and the idyllic Butterley Reservoir, where walks around the waters can be embarked on with a furry friend.

The cottage sits a stone's throw away from the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, where avid cyclists can follow the Moonraker’s ride, named after the famous rum smuggler’s tale, toward the village of Slaithwaite, or venture in the opposite direction to Standedge Tunnel, the longest tunnel in Britain, passing deep beneath the Pennines.

Why not venture on foot, across the West Nab hiking area, to Meltham, where a stunning Pleasure Garden, an exhilarating archery club, fascinating Tractor Museum and the beautiful waterfall of Folly Dolly can be found.

Holmfirth can be found further afield and is the gateway to the Peak District National Park, whilst hosting a highly rated Tea Room, the Wrinkled Stocking, and a renowned performance venue, The Picturedrome; continue to the National Park from Holmfirth to find the wonders of Digley and Ramsden Reservoir, along with the excellent walking area of Black Hill.
