  • "We had a great time at the 1885 The Retreat."

    The booking process was super quick and efficient. The property was clean and it was exactly what we were expecting (as the photos are great). A few suggestions: -The mattress is not great and could do with an upgrade. -The cooker top is quite temperamental and the 'buttons' don't always work. -There are a few loose tiles in the kitchen and the hall. -We got a text with the key and alarm codes a couple of weeks before our arrival, which suggests that the people before us had the same codes (even if they didn't). Some people (like us) might find this unsafe. Thank you very much for a lovely stay.

  • "Double yellow lines outside premises make loading/unloading a problem."

    Entrance to apartment is restricted as you have to negotiate past five wheelie bins in a narrow pathway. Difficult bringing in luggage, or subsequent shopping bags. The apartment was grubby, and the crockery and cutlery had to be cleaned to remove lipstick etc, prior to using it. Towels did not smell fresh and necessitated washing before use. The only windows are three velux roof windows, which were not easy to open or close with the pole provided. The WiFi was at best only running at 7 mbps, often lower, very disssapointing.

    I'm very sorry to read your review. Regards to the cleaning we recently hired a local cleaning company, and we did a couple of spot checks and found the cleaning was appalling, so we are now cleaning the apartment ourselves again, which is why the original reviews were very good, so we apologise. Just round the corner on New Street, there is free parking, just a very short walk away. Property Owner

  • "Described as ground floor property, however is a basement with skylights no windows."

    On road parking is difficult as there are double and single yellow lines all around. Sitting in the centre of Matlock is misleading, it's on a very steep hill that leads down to Matlock centre. Not the romantic setting I had hoped for, very modern almost clinical.

  • "It is a steep hill, but gets you fit for more walking, three nights is enough in this property for me, and just two adults."

    Gives more independence than a hotel, but worked out similar price per night than two of the hotels we stayed in as part of our week away.

  • "This is such a lovely little place for a couple to stay!"

    The only downside of our week away was the bed as one side of the mattress had been worn down and you could feel the bars underneath, causing a few Uncomfortable nights. Apart from that the stay was lovely and it’s the perfect size for a couple to stay and enjoy the area.

    It was a thin basic sprung (no pocketed springs or edge support) type that is now very uncomfortable. It could do with being replaced with something that reflects the high quality of the remainder of the premises.

  • "We stayed here for a week as our base to explore the Peak District and found it to be a very good place to stay in terms of location."

    It was easy to get to everywhere we wanted to including up to Speedwell Caverns and down to Alton Towers. On arrival, it’s apparent there is no dedicated parking for the apartment but in the time we were there, we never had an issue finding a parking spot. In fact, every single day we managed to get the same spot outside the Openreach telephone exchange approximately 2 minutes to the apartment so it was ideal. It doesn’t matter what time of the day / evening we arrived, we always had a space waiting for us. The apartment was in a very clean condition and it was well stocked. In terms of space it is perfect for a couple. We had a 3 year old with us and found it just enough for all three of us, anymore and I think it would’ve been a bit cramped. For our purposes, it was perfectly fine. I actually only have one improvement suggestion to be honest and that’s the televisions. We tried to connect to the tv by Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet for any online service, then when connecting it said the app download was corrupt. I reset the tv and tried again but on all apps (bbc iPlayer, Netflix etc) they would not boot. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue as we don’t watch much tv, but the regular terrestrial channels were struggling too. BBC One was unwatchable through a regular aerial along with a number of basic terrestrial channels. None of this affects the quality of stay however as the tv is a nice to have, but if it is important to you, we resorted to using the MacBook to stream instead so I’d suggest making the same provisions. On leaving, the owner contacted us to say my partner left her necklace and has sent that to us, so you can be assured you’re renting from someone kind and honest. Overall, a really nice, clean, comfortable stay with no problems at all. Recommended.

  • "The Retreat was the perfect place for a getaway, and a excellent location for exploring the Peak District."

    A 5 min walk down the road has all the shops you will need and a further 20 mins and you will be in Matlock bath. We highly recommend going here and visiting charles B&B chippy! The cottage was the perfect size for two people with easy parking on the side street! I would highly recommend the retreat and if i was ever visiting Matlock again i would be sure to check the availability, it felt like home away from home. The bed was also like sleeping on a cloud! Thank you!

  • "The morning of check in I received a text message informing me when the Retreat would be available (3 hours early than advertised) This was extremely helpful as I was then able to plan my day accordingly."

    After arriving at the accommodation a bottle of bubbly was left out for us (nice touch) and a folder left on the side filled with local attractions, eateries and information about the general area. Parking at the accommodation could be problematic during busy periods as it is in the middle of a residential area however we managed to park down the road with only a short minute walk to the Retreat. The Retreat suits 2-3 people as the sofa in the living area makes a comfortable double bed. However there is only seating at the table for 2 people. Nevertheless I would recommend eating out in Matlock as there are plenty of eateries to suit most all within a 5-10 minute walk. The Blue pig deli round the corner makes for a tasty quick breakfast before venturing out for the day. The host provided easy to follow instructions for the oven however the microwave wasn't as straight forward as one would hope yet we got there in the end. Occasionally we experienced some difficulty connecting to the wifi and the TV often lost connection on certain channels however this didn't cause too much of a problem as a selection of games were left in the cupboard and we enjoyed being out in town most evenings. The only form of natural light was provided by 3 skylights all fitted with blinds. Prepare for a light workout when trying to open/close them. I was pleasantly surprised to find a wide selection of tea and coffee condiments left for us in the cupboards so you don't need to worry about packing those, 3 supermarkets are also located at the bottom of Bank Road all within walk-able distance. I would definitely recommend staying at the Retreat, the outside of the property and surrounding area is just breathtaking and the inside of the accommodation is beautifully furnished.

  • "The apartment was clean and of good quality and well kitted out It is not actually in the church but attached to the sunday school building next door It is cosy (ie on the small side) with a very limited sitting out area (in a corridor really) and the windows are velux only so no views."

    There is a sofa bed in the sitting area but this would only be suitable for a child as there is little room. The apartment is not suitable for 4 adults at all. It is at the top of a steepish hill into town, so if walking into town be prepared. It was fine for us but perhaps the less fit/able should be aware of this. It provided a good base for exploring the area.

About the location


Matlock Bath 1 mile; Bakewell 8 miles.

The popular Peak District town of Matlock, together with its neighbour, Matlock Bath, has been attracting visitors to the area since the spa was developed in the late 17th century. Set in the beautiful wooded gorge of the River Derwent, the Matlocks offer a range of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as a host of attractions including Gulliver’s Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. Magnificent views down the gorge can be enjoyed from the cable car which takes visitors up to the Heights of Abraham – a great place for all the family with its showcaves, nature trail, water gardens and Owl Maze. South of the town is the start of the High Peak Cycle Trail, whilst a short drive away is the National Tramway Museum at Crich. To the north are the market town of Bakewell and Chatsworth House and Park - not to be missed!
