20 on Wednesday night water coming from kitchen ceiling there were two emergency contacts for the owner of the cottage and one for Sykes no one answered not even a system for leaving a message what if the ceiling had come down what am I suppose to do if I can’t get help luckily my husband sorted the problem but not what we come on holiday for I know in houses things go wrong but not being able to get help is not good enough after that we wanted to come home kids were upset

  • "Lovely quirky cottage which is very well equipped."

The owners have thought of most things you might need. The welcome hamper is a lovely touch and we enjoyed sitting in the garden room with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. The cottage is an ideal base for exploring the local area which has lots of history and many pleasant walks - several of which can be started from the property without the need to get in the car. From Cromford there is easy access to Matlock, Bakewell and other parts of the beautiful Peak District..

The owners really have thought of everything! Lovely welcome pack on arrival. Everything finished to a high standard. Would definitely recommend!

  • "Absolutely loved the cottage."

Like home from home. Super comfortable and super clean. However it was described as having ample parking and we did not find this to be the case. Spaces are very limited and finding a place was challenging.

Stairs steeper than anticipated, but it was mentioned in the description. I would recommend it to friends and family as its in a lovely area as well.

  • "All extremely good, a lovely property the only reason for on fewer stars for facilities was really steep stairs."

Everything you could want was provided, very well equipped and hugely interesting property with lots to look at within the house and surrounding area. Good village to use as a starting point for walks or to go further afield. The Boat Inn was great for a pint and food. Scarthins bookshop brilliant and a fantastic chocolatier and handy florist who grows her own

Walking distance to the pub, cafe, local store and Cromford Mills. Well equipped kitchen, cosy conservatory, shower worked really well and the beds were nice and comfortable. A gem of a place.

  • "Beautiful house, full of character."

Road is in a good location, neighbours very friendly. We appreciated the welcome hamper and all the information about local walks, etc. We loved exploring Cromford and surrounding area. Scarthin Books (short walk away from house) is an absolute gem. We highly recommend this house and hope to stay again.

  • "North Street is a brilliant place to stay and we highly recommend it!"

The location is superb - walking distance to the lovely village with all its pubs and restaurants, plus a train station that means it is easy for lots of people coming from different directions. The cottage is beautiful and well looked after - a real home from home. There are lots of great instructions of where everything is, plus books to browse including one showing all the walks from the cottage. We did two fantastic onces, including to Matlock Bath which was great. It feels like you are in a well loved home. The beds are super comfortable and the shower is great. Only thing to note is that the access to the main bathroom is through the twin room - there is an ensuite in the top room but without a shower. Not a problem for most - we were a group of adults and it was very easy - but if you have an early riser who wants the top room and a shower when they wake up it might be an issue. Note toilets are easily accessible from all rooms. Thank you very much to the owners for making their cottage available, we plan to return!

We loved having the conservatory area for the adults to sit in, away from the kids. Everyone enjoyed the welcome hamper, thank you very much for this. A great location to explore the local area.

.as well as the comments from other guests , which we fully endorse , I'd like to add that we have no car but found the transport links by bus and train were excellent . We did walks every day , either from the door, or by walking back to the door from Bakewell or Druffield . Loved the quirkiness and cosy warm cottage ...superb ..and local shops were more than enough for our needs, especially the butcher and cheesemonger

  • "The description of the cottage doesn't mention that the single bedroom on the first floor is only accessible by going through the first floor double bedroom."

This means that the person in the single room needs to wait until those in the first floor double are awake before going down for breakfast and also needs to go to bed before, or at the same time, as the people in the first floor double. The description of the cottage also doesn't mention that the one shower in the cottage is only accessible through the first floor double room. This means that the people in the second floor double bedroom have to wait until the people in the first floor bedroom are awake before going through for a shower or, if they want to shower in the evening, need to do so before the people in the first floor bedroom have gone to sleep. This made for more careful planning and negotiating of bedtimes and showers than any adult would normally expect to have to do on a holiday. I would not recommend this cottage unless this was made clear on the listing.

  • "This is a really lovely little cottage in a beautiful part of the world."

The house has been well thought out with thoughtful touches. Almost anything you want to go and do is within striking distance of the house. We walked from the house, went abseiling another day and of course the the brilliant Scarthin Books. The one thing that could be a bit clearer is the steepness of the steps in the house which would make it tricky for those with mobility problems or people with small children.

The property

Discover North Street Cottage in the historic village of Cromford, part of which is designated as a World Heritage Site, offering an idyllic location and an outstanding self-catering experience to this pretty part of Derbyshire.

This stunning, Grade II listed, mid-terrace townhouse enjoys three floors of characterful charm, seamlessly blended with contemporary furnishings and modern conveniences to provide a comfortable base for a group of five to call home.

The terrace was in fact built between 1771 and 1776 by Richard Arkwright, the pioneer of the water-powered cotton mill and was used to house handloom weavers and their families.

The property has sympathetically retained many original features, serving as quiet reminders of its interesting past.

Enter the property and be welcomed into the spacious sitting room, where the original feature fireplace takes centre stage before the leather sofa and TV, with the exposed beams adding to the charm of the space, serving as a peaceful spot to delve into a good book or catch up on the latest box set.

Moving through the property, you will discover a farmhouse-style kitchen, playing host to beautiful sage green units and a characterful Range cooker, which is certain to entice the chef of the group to whip up family favourite recipes.

Meals and a bottle of wine or two can be enjoyed at the dining table, where you can relish in some catch up time with your loved ones, or during a balmy evening take drinks to the sun room, where a plush L-shape sofa is awaiting and positioned overlooking the garden.

Once the sun has set, climb the staircase to the first floor to find two bedrooms, comprising of a sumptuous twin bedroom and a single bedroom, whilst on the second floor lies the master suite, boasting a king size double bed with a row of four unique, sash windows, which were originally designed to provide light to enable weaving to take place at home during the 18th century.

To the exterior, there is an enclosed garden to the rear and ample on-street parking to the front.

Immerse yourself in your surroundings further by meandering through the village, which plays host to a variety of restaurants, pubs and shops.

Whilst here, be sure to follow a guided tour of the Arkwright's Cromford Mill to brush up on the story of the site and the restoration work in progress before enjoying a spot of retail therapy at Mason Mills’ shopping complex, which is a World Heritage Site.

Don your walking shoes and explore further as you walk along the canal from Cromford Wharf to High Peak Junction or endeavour on the Derwent Valley Heritage Trail, which runs through the village, promising breath-taking scenery, nearby is Black Rocks that hang high above the village Cromford with a view of Derwent Valley.

The spa town of Matlock Bath is just a short distance away, where you will also find Gulliver's Kingdom along the way and the excellent Heights of Abraham, which is a hilltop park reached by cable car with walking trails and cavern tours.

Continue further afield to find Matlock, where you will find even more places to eat and drink, with some favourites including the Italian, Viva Restaurant and the Indian, Maazi Matlock.

Also in Matlock Bath, and just 0.75 miles from North Street Cottage, is a wonderful lido that people come from miles around to swim in.

The cottage makes a wonderful all-year-round base for walkers, runners, cyclists, and swimmers!

From here, you could also venture into the Peak District National Park, where more walking and cycling opportunities awaits, as well as the Hidden Druids Caves and Dovedale Walk, Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall.

If you would like to visit a couple of great museums on your holiday you can find Crich Tramway Museum in Matlock or Eyam Museum just a 40 minute drive away.

The market town of Bakewell and the spa town of Buxton are slightly further afield, both promising wonderful days out at any time of the year.

At the end of each day, look forward to returning to North Street Cottage to unwind.
