The property

Stagwood House is a characterful 17th-century cottage set in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.

Well-suited to families and groups of friends seeking a spacious base near the Peak District National Park, this abode boasts a large garden, ample off-road parking and a toasty woodburning stove.

The house is reached via a long private drive behind electric gates, leading up to the property where there is ample space to park before taking in the open views that surround the farmhouse on all sides.

Entering the house, an outer hall and boot room provides space to leave walking boots and outdoor wear before moving through into a spacious inner hall.

Original beams run overhead, immediately establishing the age and character of the building, while the generous proportions allow the house to feel open and well-balanced.

From here, the kitchen and dining area forms a natural hub of the house.

The range cooker sits at the heart of the room, ready for breakfasts prepared at a relaxed pace or evening meals cooked together after a day outdoors.

There is room for everyone to gather around the table, making this a space that encourages long meals and shared conversation.

A separate dining room offers an alternative setting for larger gatherings, with space to sit comfortably and extend evenings without feeling hurried.

The living room is arranged around a substantial inglenook fireplace with a woodburning stove, where evenings can be spent reading, talking, or settling in together as the fire burns.

Exposed beams frame the room, reinforcing the farmhouse character, while the scale of the space allows everyone to spread out.

A games room adds another area to enjoy, lending itself to relaxed afternoons indoors or friendly competition across generations.

A utility room supports longer stays, keeping everyday tasks contained and practical.

The sleeping accommodation continues the sense of space found throughout the property.

All five bedrooms are notably generous in size, offering room to properly unwind.

Two bedrooms benefit from en-suite facilities, one of which includes a freestanding bath where the day can be brought to a close at an unhurried pace.

The remaining bedrooms are served by a family bathroom, while a ground-floor cloakroom adds further convenience.

Outside, a very large lawned garden stretches away from the rear of the house, offering space for outdoor games, quiet moments with a book, or simply sitting and looking out across the surrounding countryside.

The farmhouse sits in an elevated position, giving far reaching views and a strong sense of separation from neighbouring properties, while remaining well connected for exploring the area.

A village shop and pub are within easy reach, and Holmfirth can be reached with a short drive for cafés, independent shops, and riverside walks. There is a good choice of country pubs nearby offering delicious food.

The wider area provides a varied choice of days out and countryside walks.Castle Hill and the Victoria Tower at Almondbury offers amazing views from the top and is well worth the walk up.

There is also the Kirklees Light Railway at Whistlestop Valley offering a range of activities ideal for kids of all ages.

Cannon Hall Farm, located in Cawthorne, Barnsley, features a popular garden centre and is a frequent filming location for Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet.

The Peak District National Park lies close by, offering high moorland walks, dramatic valleys carved by old packhorse routes, and stone edged paths that lead to expansive viewpoints.

Further afield, Chatsworth House makes a rewarding excursion, with grand historic rooms to explore, landscaped gardens that change with the seasons, and open parkland where deer move freely across the estate.

Brontë Country offers a different experience, with exposed moors shaped by wind and weather, historic villages tied closely to literary history, and walking routes that trace the landscapes that inspired classic novels.

Stagwood House in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, offers a characterful farmhouse setting with extensive space, original features, and direct access to some of the region’s most distinctive countryside and cultural landmarks.

HOLMFIRTH

Peak District National Park 3 miles; Meltham 4 miles

The old traditional Pennine town of Holmfirth is situated in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, on the edge of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Made famous by The Last of The Summer Wine TV series, there is more to Holmfirth than Compo and Nora Batty’s stockings! The ‘Picturedrome’, the North of England’s finest live music venue attracts many famous bands and is located right in the centre of the town. The pelotons from the Tour de France 2014 and the Tour de Yorkshire have both been through this quaint Holme Valley town en route to the iconic 524 metre Holme Moss climb two miles away. It is in these hills where cycling’s triple Olympic Medalist Ed Clancy grew up. Holmfirth also has a good public swimming pool and fitness centre, parks and some super shops and restaurants. The people here are friendly, the streets are quaint and the scenery is breathtaking. The Peak District National Park with its moors, dales, forests, lakes and reservoirs is also easily accessible. The Upper Derwent Valley, home to the spectacular Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs, and where the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron practiced the audacious bombing raid on the Ruhr valley in 1943, is only a short scenic drive away. Slightly further is Chatsworth, the stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and situated close to the market town of Bakewell, the home of Bakewell Puddings. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The National Coal Mining Museum, Wentworth Castle, and the Hepworth Gallery are also within short drives away and well worth a visit. For a spot of culture, Holmfirth has annual festivals with many more attractions that bring visitors back for more; such as the Folk, Arts, and Food & Drink Festivals. Also not to be missed, is Holmfirth Vineyard and Restaurant, where you can book wine tasting tours and enjoy a lovely meal in the restaurant.
