  • "We had an excellent stay at the Gatehouse."

Very clean, well equipped, and in a lovely part of the Country. The owners were very friendly and helpful. A unique property, a great blending of the historical origins, well complimented with all modern facilities tastefully added. Would like to revisit at some point.

Clean and comfortable, every mod con that you need. Bike storage a massive bonus for us, inside under cover. Right by a cycle track and surrounded by locations to travel to, we went to Trentham Estate, Monkey Forest, Stoke museums, Monsal Trail, Biddulph Way, Manifold Way, so much to do locally. Very minor niggle from me is that I found the mattress too soft and as Im virtually blind without glasses its hard to see the shower controls without them on, plus a shelf in the shower would be very helpful.

  • "This is our third time staying at the Gatehouse and although the cottage wasn’t ready for our arrival at 3pm we had a wonderful weeks stay (helped by the glorious hot dry weather)."

The cottage is situated in a lovely village with dog walks straight from the door. The mattresses have been changed which ensured we had a perfect nights sleep and the cottage was clean and well equipped which we have got to expect from the Gatehouse. The only comment I would like to make is the two seater couch by the living room door is very uncomfortable with the padding worn on the one seat - I appreciate that the cottage is decorated and filled with wonderful period pieces and it really is lovely but it did mean our evenings sitting relaxing indoors were not as relaxing as they were in previous years. Apart from that I would highly recommend this cottage although part of me wants to keep quiet about it so we can continue to return to this little piece of heaven.

We rent in the area once or twice yearly as I have a lot of family nearby. The house had all the utensils we could need, which is generally what we hope for as we both cook and the location was fab for us with the dog. Your straight onto the old disused railway for a nice off lead walk. We were left a welcome gift of wine, biscuits, crisps, tea, coffee and milk which was very well received. With it being a hectic Christmas it was great to be able to have a cup of tea to unwind when we arrived. The bedrooms of the property are very generous as was the heating! • "The Gate House is certainly unique & was immaculately presented & a true credit to the owners considering its popularity in bookings & usage over the seasons."

We had a lovely week in Oakamoor, the cottage does have everything you need plus some nice little extras that we haven't found in other cottages which certainly didn't go unnoticed by us. The garden is lovely to sit out in, listening to the babbling spring which serves as an excellent wine cooler & the visiting robins that are almost tame. As mentioned in the cottage details pets & small children would need to be supervised due to the low front wall & the spring & uneven surfaces around the garden. We took our dog & there are numerous walks from the door down the disused rail tracks & the lovely parkland area opposite the cottage. We thought we would support the local pub, the Cricketers Arms as they are finding it hard to survive nowadays. The reception at the pub was reminiscent of the pub scene in the film "American Werewolf in London" & I was half expecting to hear "The Bad Moon Arising" in the background. We didnt stay for a second drink & stuck to the road on the way home & luckily didn't encounter a Werewolf. It appears to be a local pub for local people. They are missing a trick there as they could turn it into a theme pub & rename it the "Slaughtered Lamb", and next year Rodney they would be millionaires. One issue we brought to the owners attention was the mattress on the double bed which was past its sell by date but Karen the owner said that it was already in hand to be replaced. In summary we had a great week at the Gate House & the locals we met were very friendly. We would certainly revisit in the future.

Our dogs enjoyed the garden & the open area behind the car park. My wife & I are both getting on a bit so the stairs were a little steep for us, but nothing we could not manage. The only gripe we had was that, although the kitchen was extremely well equipped, the small pan had, at some point, lost its handle rendering it useless. Needs replacing! Other than that the Gatehouse suited our needs perfectly, we would go back again, possibly next year.

A restful environment, well equipped, and feels welcoming. Perfect for the railway enthusiast with decoration empathetic to history and past role - LMS colours, and wonderful touches like 1930/40s style items. Loads of walking in the area, but can be rather muddy in places. Clearly welcomes dogs - poo bags in the drawer - and the entrance area/utility is fabulous for muddy boots and dogs! Note - there aren't a lot of pubs with food locally, and the supermarkets locally are not large and selections limited. We will go back again, it was that good.

It is opposite a cycle path with no traffic that allows access to Ramblers Retreat, Alton Bridge pub and Denstone farm shop. It is an unmade path with pot holes so not suitable for beginner riders. Toilet is downstairs via a very steep staircase, this may be a concern with younger children. Ours soon got used it. The "lean to" at the back of the house was excellent to keep two adult and two children's bikes with space for all the muddy wellies. Kitchen is extremely well equipped with everything you need to cook. A proper American fridge with plenty of space for all the holiday treats. Tea, coffee, milk and wine on arrival to help you settle in. Modern smart TV with access to most online television applications. Plenty of books to keep you busy on any wet afternoons. • "Everything at the gate house was lovely."

The beds were the comfiest we have slept in. Everything there that you could possibly need except one small thing, it is small but worth a mention, there wasn't a clothes maiden for hanging your washing out. I do know they have a dryer which is lovely but when the weather is nice I like to put my clothes outside to dry. Apart from that all was lovely. Phil and Karen was very welcoming and told us the best places to go for food ect. Would definitely recommend. It is such a lovely quirky place and the interior is gorgeous. Keep up the good work x

The gate house is beautiful and very clean and tidy. The village is lovely and very friendly. The walks just in the village are beautiful. A must is to visit ramblers retreat for a snack or just a coffee it is very pretty and food delicious. We had a great week our dog loved all the walks on the doorstep. Would highly recommend the gate house. Thankyou.

  • "This cottage was great."

It was furnished well with all mod cons - washer dryer, under floor heating, dish washer, great shower, roll-top bath, range cooker, plenty of cutlery, crockery etc. Books, maps, ideas for walking, eating, visits were all available. The owners were really friendly and have made a great job of restoring this unique cottage. Oakamoor is a lovely little village and within striking distance of the Peak District so plenty of opportunities for walking in glorious countryside. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Gate House.

Very well maintained and clean throughout, extra household supplies, and modern electrical appliances. We found everything we needed for a pleasant seven-day break. And what a beautiful part of the country, with lovely walks from the front door. I can recommend The Railway Gate Keepers House, in Oakamoor.

  • "Chosen as have childhood memories of an old railway crossing house which a school friend lived in."

What an absolutely wonderful stay we had. Owners hospitality and generosity appreciated. Loved the walks down the former railway...but not as much as our dog who was in heaven. Cottage itself is simply amazing, really tastefully decorated and furnished. Quality of everything was impressive from furniture to cooking appliance and crockery. Had some great days out in the area, and will certainly rebook at some point in the future as would like to see more of the area.

We hit some bad weather in the form of snow but it didn't detract from a great weekend in a lovely, well equipped, cosy cottage. Local pub just a short walk away friendly locals and a very good bistro just 10 minutes drive. We'll definitely be back here.

The property

This Grade II listed former crossing keeper's home is in a fantastic location in the village of Oakamoor which is surrounded by walking and cycling tracks.

You will be impressed by the unusual exterior reputedly designed by Pugin (architect of the Houses of Parliament) as soon as you arrive and the cottage is full of quirky nods to the building's heritage and the North Staffordshire railway which ran past.

With original stonework, quarry tiled floors and beautiful features, the cottage has been stunningly restored to reflect its former life.

There is a well-equipped kitchen with a Belfast sink, a fabulous range cooker and a very useful utility which houses the laundry facilities and provides a great place to leave your muddy boots at the end of the day.

The delightful dining room has a feature fireplace which is currently not in use and the sitting room has large windows and a cast iron electric stove to keep you warm and create a cosy atmosphere.

The family bathroom is also on the ground floor and boasts a freestanding roll top bath where you can soak away any stresses and strains at the end of the day.

Upstairs are the two bedrooms which have views out to the village and are lovely rooms to wake up in.

The lawned garden has a patio area with furniture and there is the unusual addition of the fenced off entrance to the Oakamoor railway tunnel at the far end.

This cottage is the perfect base for friends, families or walkers as routes lead from the doorstep out into the surrounding countryside.

With Alton Towers, so many places of historic interest, the beautiful countryside and lovely towns and villages of the Peak District National Park all nearby, this cottage is fantastically located, will appeal to most, and is a fantastic choice for a break away at any time of the year.
