  • "Lovely cottage which was surprisingly spacious with 2 big bedrooms."

Comfortable beds and sofas and well heated. There was a shower and separate bath. Terraced garden, including summer house, was a great sun trap for an afternoon drink. Great location half way between 2 village pubs. A couple of improvements: - all taps dripped, particularly the kitchen one - the dining table wasn’t fit for purpose as legs couldn’t fit underneath so you had to sit very uncomfortably side on. - needs a vegetable peeler

  • "I think 6 hours is too long between departure and arrival."

We've been renting through Sykes for 10-15 years. It used to be 4 hours. "Covid cleaning' upped it to 6. Time now to reduce it again. In the case of this rental, it didn't mattter to us.

  • "Delightful cottage and comfortable beds etc Only a few comments !"

The bath towels are very small and really need bath sheets. They wouldn’t go round any of us. No egg cups…… A chair for clothes in the main bedroom would be nice. Maybe a folding luggage rack. I don’t like putting cases onto beds

  • "We had a lovely stay at Hill Cottage over Christmas, the kitchen was very well equipped, we tend to err on the side of caution and bring our own items, really not necessary here."

A lovely Christmas themed welcome pack on our arrival and fantastic contact with the owners, over a minor issue that was resolved. The cottage is in a stunning location with so many places to visit locally, but highly recommend a walk around the village itself. Check the Miners Standard pub website for great walks and highly recommend popping in for a drink. Marks down are for the flagstones at the front of the cottage that need to be jet washed, they were very slippery where moss had been left to grow, and the need for a proper access statement to get to the cottage. This was provided by the owner after booking but not clear on Sykes, could be an issue for some. Also the ground floor toilet/cloakroom should be mentioned in the listing, whilst there are some steps it is easily accessible unless wheelchair based. I would wholeheartedly recommend Hill Cottage if you don’t have any accessibility issues.

  • "Cosy cottage renovated to a high standard in great location for accessing the Peak District."

Lovely well laid out kitchen with every thing you might need (except dishwasher). Very good quality kitchen appliances . I loved the heated flagstone floor in the sitting room and the wood burner supplied with one evening worth of logs. I recommend parking in the village if you don’t mind the walk. Thanks for the welcome tea and biscuits.

  • "An exceptionally well kitted out cottage with some nice thoughtful touches."

Although it modern it has not lost the old cottage feel and it is ideally located for the the key places of interest. I would most definitely recommend this cottage and we are already considering coming again.

  • "A wonderful cottage."

It was exceptionally clean and has a fantastic layout. The hosts were helpful by providing last minute bed sheets as the weather was particularly warm. The description was almost accurate. I would recommend that the parking description is a little more detailed in terms of expect to park your car on a steep hill and not directly outside the property esp for those who bring bicycles on their holiday and for folks with mobility issues as the stone steps to the property are uneven and the footpath is also steep. I would also recommend that you possibly look to swap out the washing machine for a dish washer too. However I appreciate this is a personal preference. Nonetheless we did have a comfortable stay. Thank you

  • "An excellent and well kept property."

The facilities provided well met our expectations and left nothing to chance. The location in both the village and Peak District was perfect for facilities, walking and entertainment. Even though we had some vile weather the TV was little used, we preferred to use the village pubs or to sit around the kitchen table and plan, talk and read (with a little wine from time to time). The garden and summer house with thier views across the village were the icing on the cake. All in all an excellent stay ( and yes we will be back).

The garden was beautiful and well equipped with several sitting areas . Winster is a great base for exploring the Peak District. Highly recommend this cottage and hope to return soon.

  • "We had a lovely stay at hill cottage, so good we didn’t want the holiday to end."

The cottage itself was very well presented, with absolutely everything needed for a comfortable stay, and the fact that it is set back away from a busy road the house itself was very quiet and peaceful. The owners made it clear that they were on hand if there was any problems, which of course there wasn’t. The only thing (which is in no way a criticism) is the garden was on quite a few levels which may not suit the elderly or people with very young children. Otherwise a great place to stay.

  • "This is our second time at Hill Cottage."

We were so happy the first time that we had to visit again. This is one of those rentals where everything is catered for. Lovely touches like a heated coat room, OS Maps of the area on the wall in the downstairs toilet, lovely cottage kitchen with all the accessories you need, comfy beds, lovely and quiet location, wood fire. There is a nice summer house but we have yet to use it, as we have visited both times in spring and it has been too cold on both occasions. Plenty of nice walks nearby, Bakewell and Buxton are both close with a car. Perfect place to wind down and relax.

  • "Our second stay this year at Hill Cottage was even better than the first."

The hosts have provided d everything guests could want. We were there on the coldest week of the winter and it was always warm and cozy and the log burner was a great extra. The situation is quiet and peaceful yet convenient for the well-stocked village community-run shop. Winster is one the most attractive and interesting villages in The Peaks with excellent walks on the hills right from the door. The views from the garden are breath-taking - we are returning to Hill Cottage for a third visit in the spring.

  • "Hill Cottage is extremely charming and well-equipped."

The garden terraces behind the cottage give wonderful views across the valley and the garden itself is enchanting. The owners have provided everything needed for a perfect romantic break and the view for the main bedroom is wonderful to wake-up to. It has ben tastefully modernised with excellent facilities and is cosy and warm but with the original features of the stone cottage in tact. We have already booked a return visit.

  • "Our family had a lovely time at the cottage."

It is set in a stunningly beautiful location. As as we live just outside of London, the peace and quiet was greatly appreciated! nice close to a friendly local shop and little walks to explore. The cottage itself was incredibly clean and comfortable. I was really pleased at how well stocked the kitchen was for cooking utensils and the bed was so comfortable. What I was looking forward to the most was being cosy next to the fire and in such a pretty location we had a lovely, relaxing time. The hosts were really considerate and really responsive. would definitely return.

  • "Very pretty cottage, tastefully decorated."

We found it easier to park on East Bank and walk to the cottage the back way, It's a steep road on which to park the car. Yes, there are lots of steps but great views from the garden and it was good to have a pre dinner drink in the Summer House. We visited both pubs in the village, The Miners Standard is a friendly walkers pub burgher and chips kind of place and The Bowling Green doesn't have a restaurant but does take aways on Fri/Sat/Sun although quite a comprehensive menu and the food was very good. It's only a 5 minute walk from the cottage. If I'm being really picky I would have liked a cafetière so that we could have made a decent cup of coffee, I'm not a fan of instant and a dishwasher would have been good but appreciate it may be difficult to have fitted one in the kitchen. It's a lovely place to stay if you like a quiet retreat and is not far from some lovely walks and places to visit.

Really pleased you enjoyed your stay at Hill Cottage and I can confirm the cottage now has a cafetière. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

About the location

WINSTER

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
