  • "Apricot Cottage is a quaint property in the village of Netherthong which combines cottage style with all the home comforts and technology you could possibly need for a short break."

Situated at the top of a hill, with stunning views of the Yorkshire countryside, the cottage has a warm and welcoming feel. The owner provides lots of thoughtful little touches - from a tray of teas & biscuits to marshmallows for toasting on the log fire! The cottage door opens to a large lounge with exposed beams, a large fireplace and dining table. There's a lovely farmhouse-style kitchen with Aga and appliances aplenty - from an air frier to microwave, dishwasher and washing machine - it is really well stocked with cleaning stuff and sundries. A few steps lead to a second lounge with TV and doors opening out to a small patio area and the drive where there is room for 2 cars. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms - 2 generous sized rooms with double beds and 1 smaller room with 2 singles. The beds were very comfy. There's a large bathroom with a walk-in shower and a big bath with TV screens at each end. Sadly the batteries on the remote needed replacing so we didn't watch telly in the bath but I did get to read my book! The cottage is really stylish with lots of soft furnishings giving it a cosy touch. It is situated just a short drive from Holmfirth itself - you could walk it if you're fit but it was a steep hill and we had my elderly father with us so we were lazy and drove into the village which is pretty and has lots of great places to eat out - we had lovely meals out at Harveys, The Bridge Inn and Raj of India. And of course, we couldn't go to Holmfirth without visiting Sid's Cafe for a cream tea. We also visited Compo's grave, Nora Batty's steps and went on the Last of the Summer Wine tour which meanders through the glorious Yorkshire hills showing the locations where the long-running comedy series was set. We also enjoyed fab days out at Hebden Bridge and York. A pet-friendly cottage, there were lots of lovely walks for our pooch to explore - although it's very hilly so my unfit calves were a bit achey but it was worth it for the fantastic views. The cottage is close to a cider orchard and cafe where they make their own ciders and just 50 feet away from the local pub - The Cricketers Arms - where we were made to feel most welcome and had an enjoyable evening chatting with folk around the firepit in the beer garden and games of pool with the locals. We spotted an eagle one evening and a neighbour said there's always badgers pottering about the area. My family and I had a wonderful time and didn't want to leave - hopefully, we'll be back soon

About the location

HOLMFIRTH

Peak District National Park 3 miles; Meltham 4 miles

The old traditional Pennine town of Holmfirth is situated in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, on the edge of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Made famous by The Last of The Summer Wine TV series, there is more to Holmfirth than Compo and Nora Batty’s stockings! The ‘Picturedrome’, the North of England’s finest live music venue attracts many famous bands and is located right in the centre of the town. The pelotons from the Tour de France 2014 and the Tour de Yorkshire have both been through this quaint Holme Valley town en route to the iconic 524 metre Holme Moss climb two miles away. It is in these hills where cycling’s triple Olympic Medalist Ed Clancy grew up. Holmfirth also has a good public swimming pool and fitness centre, parks and some super shops and restaurants. The people here are friendly, the streets are quaint and the scenery is breathtaking. The Peak District National Park with its moors, dales, forests, lakes and reservoirs is also easily accessible. The Upper Derwent Valley, home to the spectacular Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs, and where the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron practiced the audacious bombing raid on the Ruhr valley in 1943, is only a short scenic drive away. Slightly further is Chatsworth, the stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and situated close to the market town of Bakewell, the home of Bakewell Puddings. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The National Coal Mining Museum, Wentworth Castle, and the Hepworth Gallery are also within short drives away and well worth a visit. For a spot of culture, Holmfirth has annual festivals with many more attractions that bring visitors back for more; such as the Folk, Arts, and Food & Drink Festivals. Also not to be missed, is Holmfirth Vineyard and Restaurant, where you can book wine tasting tours and enjoy a lovely meal in the restaurant.
