  • "The cottage is well equipped with everything you could possible need."

The property is very comfortable, very clean and the welcome pack provided was a bonus. The only improvement I could think off is a bit of tidying up in the garden as weeds/vegetation is hanging over the path and the front door. This wasn’t a problem for us as we had dry weather but could be if it was wet. It would be nice if the local pub did meals but obviously that has nothing to do with the cottage owners. All in all highly recommended.

The area was gorgeous, a river and weir with a park one way and fantastic wood walks to explore the other way and all on your doorstep. The front garden was lovely a real suntrap and it was lovely sitting out there amidst all the plants and flowers watching the birds come and go at the bird feeder. There was great information provided on the local area including different walks, which was really handy and many books and leaflets on the peak District and beyond. This is a real gem of a place.

Also great for local walks, with a welcoming village ambience and some spectacular vistas. We had a great time walking the canal from Froghall Wharf, and visiting Cheddleton Flint Mill. The industrial history of the area: from river to canal, mills, lime-kilns, turnpike road and railway (with Beeching debris from the 1960s) is quite awesome & thought-provoking. The accommodation was excellent, with very comfortable beds and, in Eric, a most helpful host. The feeder in front of the house was a constant pleasure. We saw siskin, coal tit, great tit, blue tit, long-tailed tit, carrion crow, jackdaw, magpie, g.s. woodpecker, goldfinch, chaffinch, nuthatch, sparrow, dunnock, pheasant, long-tailed field mouse, common shrew. There was a cuckoo calling across the valley, and at the Roaches another cuckoo and skylarks. We glimpsed a pied flycatcher at Coombes Valley. A great holiday.

It really is in a peaceful, idyllic location, but so convenient for visiting surrounding attractions, too: Churnet Valley Railway, Peak Wildlife Park, Alton Towers & Trentham Gardens were all in easy reach. As we had a toddler, we didn’t do much walking, but hope to return to enjoy the woods & footpaths on the doorstep. The house was clean, cosy & very comfortable & we enjoyed trying to spot the visiting birds & squirrels through the bay window. It was a welcome retreat after hectic days. There has only been one other cottage to which we have returned but this will definitely be another, we did consider coming back over Christmas but we were unable to. Sorry if this is a long review but this cottage deserves it. The cottage has everything you could need; I'll start with something that may be important to most WIFI - brilliant Kitchenware all you could ask for and the hosts left milk, coffee, sugar, tea and a lovely cake for our arrival, great welcome...thank you. Bedrooms are good size doubles and the bedding was lovely and snuggly, loved the bathroom, relaxing in the huge tub with a good book. Plenty of information of surrounding activities and walks, we went walking from the door (6 miles) and on other days to Poole Cavern and Peak Wildlife Park but there is lots more to do. I can't review the local pubs as we are not pub goers. Plenty of books, games and DVDs and smart TV. Open fire - great after a day out walking and then chill with a glass of wine, lovely neighbors will provide you with extra logs if needed, they are not intrusive but a very friendly family and happy to help and Tim the dog is adorable. Sit in the wingback chairs and watch the birds and squirrels, we seen, tits, nuthatch, red legged grouse and a woodpecker and bird food is available for top ups. Alton Towers is a 1.5 miles away if you want to visit. Cheadle supermarkets approx 12 minutes away, Asda, Morrisons and Iceland. Deanstone Hall farm shop is approx 15 minutes away and worth a visit for local produce. In summary, we had a fantastic week and will definitely be back...thank you to our hosts

We’ll furnished with everything you might need for a stay. Comfortable furniture & quality bedding/linen. Showering was difficult with no rail to hold stepping in/out of the bath. (We are both over 75). As must be other guests. The induction hob took a bit of mastering! To watch the birds/squirrels was a joy, so their supply of food was a lovely bonus. The welcome gifts, milk, cake, biscuits & doggy treats were great! Our only hazard, because we had a wet week, were the back steps, very mossy and slippery to negotiate to pickup after the dog. Aside from those comments we had a lovely week, warm, comfortable, lots of walks from the door. Will definitely think of revisiting in the spring.

Thank you for the feedback, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We have planned for January to redo the bath room keeping the roll top bath but moving it so that a stand alone shower can be installed. Hope to see you again. Property Owner

There are no local shops so shopping needs to be done elsewhere but not a problem when you’re out & about. The pub in the village does not serve food which is a shame as it’s less than 5 mins walk away but there are some lovely pubs in the area. The facilities at the cottage are good, the kitchen in particular being one of the best we’ve ever found despite the lack of a dishwasher and the knives requiring a sharpen. The shower over a roll top bath is interesting as space to move is limited when surrounded by the shower curtain. The bird feeder at the front of the house was always busy with birds and squirrels so the supply of food was appreciated. Overall a good location for exploring the southern end of the Peaks.

Off road parking was a little tight due to vehicles parking either side and the driveway itself was snug, I bumped my rear bumper parking once or twice and the stone wall isn't exactly kind if you do that, although I have a large vehicle so that's on me. Property itself is lovely has every thing you could need, was very clean when we arrived with a few items left for us which was a nice touch, bedrooms were lovely and bathroom was great albeit I felt bad for dripping water out of the bath when showering but it's an all around curtain which is a challenge when the taps are behind the curtain. The other way there are open grass areas. A short distance by car there are a number of lovely walks such that we would certainly come back to the area. There are also some very nice pubs to call into for food. The raised patio at the rear would not be suitable for young children or the elderly as the steps are on the steep side. The property had everything we required & was very clean & comfortable. It would be lovely, when possible, to up date the bathroom to have a separate shower rather than over the bath. An extractor fan could then also be fitted to the room. It would make a fantastic wet room !! Anyone who is interested in going to Alton Towers would find this property to be in a great position. We would recommend this holiday home, it was lovely sitting having our morning coffee watching the birds at the various feeders just outside. Only real issue we had was with the induction hob, planned some meals to cook for ourselves but the hob wouldn’t work so had to resort to getting takeaways adding more expense and wasted food. I would suggest getting black out blinds in the bedrooms as the curtains sit a few inches away from the wall, this meant that the sun came through into the room a lot especially in the master bedroom. It would also wake up our 3 year old son as soon as the sun came up, not ideal at 6-7 in the morning. Apart from these issues we had a really lovely stay in a nice area of the country.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions. I am sorry that you had difficulties with the induction hob. We have checked this since your stay and can confirm that it does work but the instructions have to be followed and the correct pan needs to be used on the corresponding hob. The instructions were left for you and our number was also there. We would have been able to help if you had called us for assistance. I am glad you enjoyed your stay otherwise. Property Owner

  • "The on-road parking in front of the cottage is very tight and on one occasion when returning to the cottage, we had to park about 200 metres away- not so good as I am mobility restricted and carrying luggage that far would be extremely difficult."

The steep access to the cottage and stairs would mean wheelchair users would be unable to stay anyway. That is really the only downside. The cottage is, however, absolutely fine. The decoration and cleanliness are probably the best that we have met. It has a large well equipped kitchen, in which the owners had thoughtfully left some milk, teabags, cake etc. and some dog treats ( very dog-friendly here). There is a TV and a DVD player with an excellent selection of DVDs. Books and games are also provided. We were very impressed with the cottage handbook, as it not only covered essential information, but also answered some questions we had about the origin of the cottages at Riverside. The location is very peaceful, and the local dogs friendly and well behaved- did not hear any barking at all whilst we were there. The Churnet River is on the opposite side of the road from the cottage and makes for a delightful setting. It is in quite a good location for visiting attractions in the area, but note that some of the roads are very narrow, steep and winding so use a decent road map for the best roads- don't rely on a satnav (especially not a Garmin-I'm scrapping mine) to get you anywhere! Finally, full marks to Sykes for the information e-mails and a big Thank You indeed to the property owners for the standard of their cottage and the really useful extras provided on our arrival.

  • "Lovely cottage."

Perfect for our stay and visit to Alton Towers- Prime location. Friendly welcoming pub at the end of the road. Beds were so comfy. Everything was immaculate. Very thoughtful for people staying with dogs. Lovely all round!

  • "Directions to the cottage were innacurate."

It would be helpful if the house number was on garden gate as unusually 2 cottages share the same gate and the number can’t be seen from the road. May sometimes be difficult to park right outside but room further up the road. Cottage facilities and extra touches were very generous and exceeded expectations. Would most definitely stay there again if In the area.

  • "This was a last minute booking and we were delighted with the cottage and the surroundings."

The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. There were numerous walks starting from the cottage doorstep and we didn't need to use our car during our 4 night stay. The village pub is dog and visitor friendly but unfortunately doesn't do food. The Rambler's Retreat is about a half an hour stroll and perfect for lunch or snacks. Dogs are allowed in the garden and there are covered seating areas should the weather be wet.

  • "Cottage lovely in a very quiet location in beautiful surroundings."

Very good location for walks. The walk to Ramblers Retreat for lunch a must. Only downside is back garden as this could do with a facelift. Wanted to sit out back in evening as more shaded and cooler although loved watching the many birds and squirrels in front garden. Nice welcome gifts left by owners. Thank you

  • "Excellent cottage."

Clean, comfortable, peaceful. Highly recommended. One small point: the hob wouldn't turn on. If you need instructions to turn it on, and it still doesn't work, it's a bit too fancy for a rental.
