  • "Everything was lovely but a couple of issues cropped up."

1 the bathroom fan was very random when it came on and was on for a full 24 hours at one point 2 the radiator in the main lounge doesn’t get hot. I tried ringing the numbers listed for assistance and could not get hold of anyone.

Hi Sheila, thanks for your feedback. I will look into these matters and I’m sorry you weren’t able to get hold of me at the time of your stay so that I could have provided assistance at the time. I had put in the welcome pack to contact me via WhatsApp, because my telephone signal is very poor where I live but I will endeavour to make this clearer in my welcome email in future. I have also let Sykes know the number of our cleaner for urgent queries as well so any calls will get passed onto me more quickly. Kind Regards, Brett. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was really lovely, well-equipped and cosy and in a great location for exploring the Peak District."

I think it might have been a housekeeping error but there was no toilet paper when we arrived. We arrived after the local shop closed, so we had to drive to the Coop in Darley Dale to stock up. Other things such as biscuits, milk etc. were provided so hopefully just an oversight.

Hi Frances, I'm glad that you enjoyed yout stay and thanks for your feedback. We apologise for the oversight with the toilet paper, and I have since changed cleaning company to ensure everything is provided. Kind Regards, Brett Property Owner

  • "Beautiful cottage."

Very clean and comfortable, containing everything needed. As we lucked in on a sunny weekend a small courtyard or garden would have been ideal. Found parking at the top of the road which was great exercise!

  • "Winster is a delightful village, perfectly sited for walking."

The cottage was clean, warm and comfortable. It is, however, a very old building on a steep hill, so be aware of steep stairs up to the bedrooms and down to the kitchen. The kitchen has the original stone floor, and the bedrooms the original floorboards, so bring slippers in the winter. Also read the guide (unlike us) and bring tea towels. Parking no problem by a short walk at the top of the hill.

Thank you for your lovely feedback, we are sorry that there were no tea towels for your stay we can ensure these are provided for all guests and are left witihn the property for use. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again in the future. Property Owner

The parking arrangements were exactly as described and straightforward. It was a perfect base for a week of walking in the Peak District.

  • "Kitchen lacked a useable cheese grater or a garlic press."

Bathroom sink is tiny and lacks any surface to put things like contact lens case on to; could be remedied with the addition of a shelf. Otherwise the cottage was comfortable, clean and charming.

  • "Missed the personal element of the booking."

In the past I’ve booked with other companies and there’s been some interaction with the owners. I don’t like the feel of it being a purely business transaction of Skyescottages.

  • "Very well presented cottage, clean and tidy and most home comforts."

All the admin details done very well. Two minor negatives which would stop our return visit to this property - probably little too small for us as a family of four as there is no front or back garden space to use, so you are bound to inside the house when there, and a 5.50am alarm from the neighbour's car starting and revving up the road each morning.

  • "The cottage is delightful and set in a beautiful quaint and authentic street away from traffic, but within only 100 metres of the Village shop."

Car parking had been a concern before travelling, but proved completely trouble-free; we parked at the top of the road where there was always space. The location allowed for a variety of lovely walks from the front door as well as an abundance of lovely areas to visit and/or walk. The Limestone Way to Youlgreave (and a good lunch in the Farmyard Inn there) before retracing our steps was a particular highlight.

  • "The master bedroom is a stunning room with huge floorboards and original wooden beams that show that Old Cottage is very old!"

In contrast the downstairs walk in shower room has under floor heating and feels quite luxurious. The kitchen has everything you need except perhaps a set of scales and a measuring jug! We like cooking. We loved the mix of country kitchen design with modern tiles. The original stone floor adds to the home’s sense of history and character. Everything works well in the house and the swish tv in the cosy lounge is a bonus. I am already missing the house and hope to return in the future. Thanks for the holiday and a great experience!

  • "We enjoyed our stay in the cottage immensely."

The owners have clearly gone the extra mile and provided first-rate accommodation. The furnishings were of a high standard, the cottage was well equipped and very clean. Nice touches like the complimentary shampoo, conditioner and soap as well as the tea, coffee and biscuits were really appreciated. We felt at home from day one. I would recommend the Miners Standard Pub for excellent food and drink. The lack of parking outside the cottage did not detract from our enjoyment. The walk up the hill to where we parked the car was rewarded with fantastic views of the countryside. Highly recommended,

  • "The Old Cottage was exactly what we were after - a cosy base to spend a week in the Peak District with a pub and a shop close by."

The cottage is well equipped: a modern oven, hob and dishwasher in the kitchen; a smart TV with high speed WiFi in the living room. The hosts were also personable and responsive over email ahead of our arrival - should there have been a need to contact them during our stay (there wasn't) I have little doubt they would have responded swiftly to resolve any problems. The cottage wasn't particularly child friendly - we have an almost-two year old; but we knew this when booking and it didn't cause any problems - we were just that little bit more vigilant around the stone steps. 10/10 - we had a great week.

About the location

WINSTER

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
