  • "Super clean cottage / barn, always a bug-bear of mine if not."

Kitchen is well-equipped, shower has good power flow, bed comfy, sky-light in bedroom ideal for watching stars & early morning clouds, sufficient outdoor space for dogs with private yard & gate, great views, bonus were the cows in adjacent field & sounds of sheep/lambs in nearby fields, owners are very easy-going & friendly, their young son is an absolute joy to chat with, and their dogs are very cute. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend as a holiday or short get-away.

Beautiful location, lovely cottage, lovely touches with the Christmas decorations. We visited a lovely pub in Alton quite a few nights only 10mins drive and dog friendly. Local eggs from the farms next door and then milk and butter from the local dairy farm is a must. Would definitely recommend staying here.

  • "The cottage was spotlessly clean and very well equipped."

We met the owner on arrival as she was servicing the neighbouring cottage. She was very helpful and gave us lots of information about walks and dog friendly establishments in the area (as we had our greyhound with us). All in all I would say that Herdwicks Barn is a perfect place to stay in for the area - very clean warm and comfortable and we would highly recommend it to others looking for a walking holiday or a stay in that area either with or without a dog!

It has always been very clean, it’s a lovely spot. A fan would of been helpful this time due to the heat, but we will definitely be back and have recommended this accommodation and Sykes to people in the past.

Obviously you need a car due to location , we did find a cycle trail just about 5 mins down in the next village ( oakamoor) which was about 6 miles which lead to another village with a good farm shop and outdoor seating area. Nice places to visit about 20 mins direction either way , carsington water , llam park ( national trust) worth a visit .

Herdwicks Barn was the perfect base for us to set off from for activities in the Peak District and further afield. We generally didn't have to travel any longer than 45mins to get to attractions. 30am which was disappointing as did not expect this. Also there was no information on recycling in the property which was poor given there were two bins and not all council's take the same things.

This was our first break in four years and we couldn't have been more fortunate with our choice. We chose to cook and eat in every night of our holiday and the facilities were perfect for self-catering. The owners were so friendly and helpful and we really couldn't fault anything. We even had glorious weather which enabled us to sit out and enjoy the garden which being fully enclosed was an absolute boon for our little dog. Thank you so much for providing us with the most perfect cottage in a wonderful location.

The setting was beautiful and the cottage was perfect. It has a really rustic feel yet very modern at the same time. The location is calm and 'secluded' but a short drive to everywhere. We did a number of walks and in Sunday went to the Ramblers retreat for brunch (10mins away) and it was idillic. The owner was lovely and even provided tables and chair for us to eat outside in the evening sun. It was just wonderful. Highly recommended.
