  • "A really good location."

Plenty of places to eat and drink within a short walking distance. If you would rather cater for yourself there is a generous sized kitchen with everything you need. Groceries shops within walking distance so it was possible to nip out for bread or a pint of milk when needed. It was great being able to walk everywhere in Buxton. Parking large enough for a large car. We were able to park an VW Amarok pickup truck in the allocated space. After a long day out it was nice to relax on a comfy sofa.

  • "Very nice location, the place is nice, comfy."

Be careful to thermic isolation (in winter the place must be very cold), wifi a bit weak maybe... Otherwise, very good location, recommended

  • "Crompton Lodge is perfectly placed to access amenities in Buxton."

The property has huge potential, however, the hidden faults are very disappointing. The lack of investment leaves you with a sour taste. The kingspan at the back of the bed under the curtain, insulation poking through the cracks in the wooden ceiling, the fridge defrosting, are to name but a few. If the property was brought to the standard that people would expect this would be difficult to book at short notice. Thank you to the cleaner for her kindness.

  • "Great place and location."

Stayed here for one week in August. Short walk into centre and park. Plenty of pubs and restaurants which are dog friendly. We did some lovely walks around Buxton and visited other towns using buses and car. Definitely worth a visit and would return on our next adventure to the Peak District.

  • "The property was comfortable, well placed and well equipped, The only item I found lacking was a teapot."

From the photos I was aware that the bed was against the wall but decided that was not an issue as I was on my own, however I had not realised how high the bed was from the ground. Fortunately I am very fit, but had I had problems with hips or knees or flexibility as many people of my age do, this could have been a problem. I was able to climb onto the bed and slide down to the floor again. The other thing that I found unusual was that there is no wash basin in the bathroom, just the bath with shower over and the loo. The property was quiet, and the parking good.

  • "It was great to be in the heart of Buxton yet in a quiet location with a private parking space."

We found the Plantation and the walk to Solomon’s temple on the first evening and the route to the Pavilion gardens from the accommodation on the third - a guide to this would have helped. We planned to go to the Heavens of Abraham and Hathersage but a file with a few brochures would help visitors We were very comfortable in the flat but couldn’t really use the garden as it isn’t private or fenced off - felt this wasn’t accurate on the booking site.

  • "We read the reviews so was aware that there was no sink in the bathroom beforehand although it is a bit strange and I'm sure a small cloakroom sink could be fitted in there."

It was too hot though. We switched the heating off but every time we went out and came back in it was back on and it was really hot weather and not many windows to open. The bathroom radiator never went off so it was very hot in there. The facilities in the kitchen were more than adequate but we only used it to make hot drinks. The cutlery drawer had crumbs in and some of cutlery was not very clean. Although we could take our dog we couldn't let her walk around in the outside garden area as there was a line we weren't allowed to cross so maybe not too dog friendly. It does have everything you need though and is in a good location for town with parking.

  • "Lovely holiday in Compton Lodge."

Very pleasant studio style apartment, ideal for one or two people. I was with my dog and felt very safe on my own. Only thing that needs attention is the door lock as it sometimes needs a heavy hand to turn the lock. Otherwise all was very good.

  • "Enjoyed our stay but it is a little bit quirky."

Kitchen area is excellent - modern, well planned, comprehensive. Elsewhere the use of thick swan timber for ceiling and sills a bit overdone. Bed is comfortable. Bathroom is strange - no hand basin and the bath is actually only for a shower? Boiler packed up on our last evening. 3 stars would be unkind, 4 is a bit generous. Would give 3 and half if possible.

  • "We had a great stay at Compton Lodge."

There are a few issues like, no basin in the bathroom and the bed is a little high, making it difficult to get out of. None of this changed the overall enjoyment of our stay.

  • "We had a disappointing stay."

The lack of wash basin in the bathroom was surmountable but it did seem strange washing in the kitchen sink! The bed was comfortable enough but too high for us and with one side against a wall it was difficult for us (reasonably active 75 year olds) to get in and out. The wind rattled the adjacent up and over garage door ensuring disturbed nights. The accommodation was warm when we arrived but the boiler broke down and needed replacing. We were offered a refund if we wanted to curtail our holiday, which we did, but nothing has been received yet after nearly a month. I've left completing this review for 3 weeks hoping I could be more positive but I can't as I have heard no more from the owner. On the plus side the on site manager was helpful and provided additional electric heating.

About the location

BUXTON

Tideswell 7 miles; Bakewell 12 miles; Matlock 21 miles.

It was the constant 28 degrees centigrade of the bubbling blue waters of Buxton's eight thermal springs that originally attracted the Romans to the town. However it was during the 18th and 19th centuries, under the patronage of successive Dukes of Devonshire, that the Palladian splendour of the Buxton of today was designed and built - including the magnificent semi-circular Crescent, The Great Stable, Hall Bank, The Square, The Pavilion Gardens and The Opera House. Today visitors continue to enjoy these magnificent buildings and gardens, as well as the Opera House's full programme and annual festivals of music and arts. There is good walking close by with rugged peaks to the north and gentle hills and dales to the south and a number of pretty towns and villages are dotted throughout including Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water, Castleton and Edale. The stunning properties of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are within easy driving distance and must be seen while visiting this area. A great base for exploring the Peak District.
