“Very enjoyable stay.”

The owner Steve was very helpful and welcoming. I even got an upgrade to the Loft as the TV Sky Box broke in The Shavings. No fault of the owners. Just one of those things. Biscuits, tea, coffee, milk on arrival too. I would definitely stay there again. Very good value for money and a great base from which to explore the Peak District. Many thanks.

“Just in terms of The Shavings Cottage.”

It definitely met our expectations but 2 small additions would be useful. 1. I feel that the bathroom could benefit from some hooks on the back of the door or on the wall. 2. We had a small dog with us and felt that a gate on the garden wall entrance would have been useful.

“This was the 4th year at The Shavings and as always the owners, could not do enough to make our holiday enjoyable.”

Tea, coffee and biscuits were left for us to enjoy when we arrived (great start after 4 hour drive). Jessie (the dog) as always greeted us with waggy tail and wanted fussed. Definitely going back again without hesitation.

“The small water heater over the sink was useless.”

The door to the shower room would not latch or lock was reported 1st day The answer was someone got trapped in it and had to Jamb the latch .The latch popped out on its own later in the first week that meant eather one of us could get trapped in the shower so I Jammed it back temporary then reported again He said I will remove lock he came across to do this we went out on our return I noticed there was a new lock fitted To my dismay it was fitted wrong way round and the bottom hinge was broken this is how it stayed. It had a brand new kitchen fitted but the grill handle. Was the wrong one he thought someone might have swapped it and said we would have to use oven mitts. Mattress was bad springs where on the way through also would like to know why it was advertised as a cottage but really it was a bed sit . We still enjoyed our holiday though we were there for 2 weeks but no washing facilities sorry about all this Mr & Mrs Hines

“Small wardrobe with no hangers for trousers.”

2 small mirrors with no lights nearby for ladies to do makeup a full length mirror would have been the answer maybe the one over the bed.no room for bedside lockers but room for 2 shelves which would have been helpful. The small mirror over the sink if you tried to use it you would knock the shelf. the sink was for a caravan when there was plenty of room for a full size one. the very small hot water boiler over the sink when turned to hot would switch itself off. no grill handle. one small frying pan 6 inch

Miles of footpaths to explore (particularly enjoyed walking through the farmland on the public footpath to King Sterndale close by. Fantastic holiday all round and we shall be using the company to rebook again. Thanks for a lovely holiday!

I was left in peace. Lovely owners. The property was spotless and very comfortable. Great kitchen. Plenty of heating. Hot shower. Lovely walk around the field behind with very friendly horses. Supermarket nearby. Just perfect.

“Simply lovely”

Stayed here over Christmas and it was perfect. We were warmly welcomed and the studio is everything we hoped for. Cosy, warm, well-equipped. We found mince pies to enjoy when we arrived. Would definitely come here again (the visitors book is full of people that have been here multiple times and positive comments). Thank you!

“Excellent base for the peaks.”

We have just returned home after a lovely week in this area. The shavings is perfect for a couple and dog. Comfortable accommodation with all amenities we needed. Clean and tidy cottage with own parking, greeted by a pack of cookies and fresh milk. There is plenty of heating so this can be used all year. From the visitors book there appears people on their 7 and 8th visit's. Can't recommend highly enough. So thank you for a lovely stay. We may well returned if you have a vacancy. Would recommend you use the A515 access on your first visit and avoid the A6 side until you find your way around.

After a long drive from Devon motorway gridlocks.we arrived at the shavings,lovely bigger than expected ideal for a couple everything one would need .and very comfortable.Very good position for visiting many places.

“Superb week”

I stayed at The Shavings earlier this year and would have no hesitation in going back. The accommodation was superb, very comfortable and the accommodation is in a nice quiet spot. It is in an ideal spot for visiting many places. I have no hesitation in recommending this accommodation to anyone.

“Loved it!”

We spent a few days at The Shavings in September. We loved the quiet location and we felt very welcome indeed. The owner showed us everything and suggested things to do & see in the area. The cottage is just the right size for a couple, with a fully equipped kitchen and a very comfortable bed. There was one slight problem: the cottage smelled a little damp and some wooden cooking utensils were mouldy but we alerted the owner to this when we left, because it really wasn't a big deal - he was shocked and apologized. It seems that a pipe in the kitchen wall was causing problems. He said he was going to have it looked immediately. We will probably be back - next time with our dog! I would recommend this cottage to people who want some peace and quiet. As it's a working farm, there is the occasional farm noise but nothing that bothered us. People with allergies to mould etc might want to check ahead if the problem has been fixed.

“Very convenient base in the Peak”

Terrific value for money. Excellent kitchen, and pretty much everything else you could need, with parking right outside. There is also a small seating area on the patio. The location is very convenient for both outdoor activities and for visiting Buxton: you feel you are in the middle of the countryside, but the town is only a couple of miles away. I would just be aware that you have another bedroom on top of you in the upstairs accommodation, and if young children are staying there you are likely to be woken early in the morning. A bonus is the shared laundry: very useful to have a washing machine available.

“Fantastically relaxing!!”

The Shavings was a compact rental, with all the amenities that you would expect. The very friendly owners were on hand to show us around and offer advice on places to visit, they had ensured that we had fresh milk to see us through until the next day.It was hard to believe that this place was so close to the main a6 road because situated as it is atop a hill, via a wooded valley, you could have been miles from the nearest habitation. Of course the stunning Peak District all around us was the icing on the cake. Would not be able to recommend this highly enough, more than value for money. Thank you!

“Slightly Off The Beaten Path”

The property is located in a very quiet hamlet a couple of miles outside Buxton. If you are happy to drive everywhere including to the pub, shop, restaurant etc then you will be fine. The property was very cosy, clean, and well maintained and is a good size for a couple.

“great holidays”

The home was wonderful!!! We stayed at a very nice place and the customers were very friendly. There is a lot to do in Buxton. We visited some caverns and we visited the Farmer´s market which was very interesting. It was so nice - we will be back soon!

Buxton 2.5 miles. A charmingly-cosy studio apartment, set in the rural hamlet of Cowdale.

This property is a lovely alternative to the usual Peak District cottages, in a superb location on the edge of the Peak District National Park, just 2.5 miles from Buxton.

Set on the ground floor of an old stone barn, The Shavings offers comfortable, welcoming accommodation.

This is an ideal location for making the most of what's on offer in the area - there are plenty of varied and enjoyable walks from the door, not to mention a choice of renowned cycle trails within easy reach.

Add to that the wonderful surrounding countryside, theme parks, historic houses and market towns (offering delicious locally-produced food and drink!) and you are left in no doubt that The Shavings is a wonderfully welcoming and economical base for a relaxing holiday in the Peak District.

About the location

BUXTON

Tideswell 7 miles; Bakewell 12 miles; Matlock 21 miles.

It was the constant 28 degrees centigrade of the bubbling blue waters of Buxton's eight thermal springs that originally attracted the Romans to the town. However it was during the 18th and 19th centuries, under the patronage of successive Dukes of Devonshire, that the Palladian splendour of the Buxton of today was designed and built - including the magnificent semi-circular Crescent, The Great Stable, Hall Bank, The Square, The Pavilion Gardens and The Opera House. Today visitors continue to enjoy these magnificent buildings and gardens, as well as the Opera House's full programme and annual festivals of music and arts. There is good walking close by with rugged peaks to the north and gentle hills and dales to the south and a number of pretty towns and villages are dotted throughout including Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water, Castleton and Edale. The stunning properties of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are within easy driving distance and must be seen while visiting this area. A great base for exploring the Peak District.
