  • "A friend said before we left how the Peak District rivals the Lake District in beauty."

I can say hand on heart how that was absolutely true and not a drop of rain either! The cottage is in a really good position for walks and not just from the doorstep (we particularly enjoyed walking around the Quarry) but also for exploring further, the Monseal Viaduct was only 10 min drive away. And we had no issues with parking either, nor did we find the hill that steep when walking. The cottage is warm and comfortable, the log burner is easy to use, and works very quickly. And I enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. The only thing that I'd point out (perhaps as I'm a fellow cottage cleaner) is the cleanliness, there was a lot of dust around the wardrobe in the master bedroom, cup rings on the bedside tables, and both the mirror and the window had finger smudges all over them. There was also dust all on the bottom of the stand-up speakers by the telly and where the DVD player lives, and the log burner hadn't been cleaned out prior to our arrival. Unfortunately there were dog hairs all over the back of the sofa by the window and I think that having a cream mat by the entrance could be replaced by something darker as it looks very grubby. Some information about a wheelie bin in the welcome pack would have been helpful too? However these issues didn't stop us from having a great time and probably wouldn't stop us from rebooking either.... I'd just bring my own spray and duster next time. :-)

  • "A great cottage."

Very clean & comfortable. The steepness of the hill & the parking problems make it unsuitable for people with mobility problems. It should be made clearer in the listing about the severity of the road & also to state the property has 'two parking spaces on a first come first served basis' is inaccurate as really you can park anywhere, but you are competing with everyone else in the street! On the last night we had to park at the other end of the village. But the cottage itself is fantastic & highly recommended.

Whilst maps were provided, the usual folder of instructions/local information was missing (due to COVID). The information provided prior to arrival had instructions for oven etc, and suggested walks which we should have printed. A little disconcerting to find a dehumidifier running on our arrival, but this was not a problem and we emptied it daily. An ideal base to explore the beautiful Derbyshire peaks. We'd just like to flag that the toilet paper and handwash was a little under-provided. We had only two loo rolls to last two of us for a week, so we needed to buy more. We also needed to buy handwash. The bathroom container was almost empty on arrival and the one in the kitchen only had a little more in it, which on use we discovered had been watered down. Again, we had to buy our own, which was less than ideal, but otherwise the cottage was lovely and comfortable and perfect for our needs.

  • "We're just back from a lovely stay at Willow View."

The cottage felt warm and welcoming on a cold December evening when we arrived. As some of commented, it can get cold downstairs in the cottage. Once warmed up though it's a very cosy place to relax. We had a snowed in day and power cut one day so were very grateful for the log fire and had luckily stocked up on logs the day before. We slept very well in the cottage and found the kitchen had all we needed for making meals. Whilst not a lot going on in Stoney Middleton (the quietness preferred so not a bad point) we found the cottage to be a great place to visit all the lovely nearby places. We had a day at Chatsworth, Bakewell and Castleton and all a short drive away. A note that the cleaners were there promptly at departure time and eagerly waiting for our parking space so we had to rush out with luggage. 10am means 10am. We loved the cottage and location and will probably book again.

  • "A small but well appointed cottage."

The only problem we had was that the sitting area was cold in late afternoon even if heating turned up. The bedroom was warmer than the sitting room. (Our stay was late November and it was cold out). Also although there was a pub with walking distance the only food they served during the week was pizza which took an hour to come. The cottage permits pets which is great but there is no greenery within walking distance to let your dog out for his calls of nature so as others have commented it is not very good for dogs.

I gave them a wipe over. The downstairs flooring was also pretty grubby when wearing white socks. Also it would be useful to have more than one spare bin liner, thankfully I had a spare one in my car. We stripped the beds when we left as requested but couldn’t find the bags to put the dirty laundry in. Other than that the house was great. Beds were very comfortable. A good area to get to many sites and eating places. One comment which I would like the owners to have is, The front door has a wonderful seal to it and can see it needs it to keep weather out BUT with such a small grip to pull the door open even I as a life time farmer with big hands had a problem opening the door, my wife could not manage, just a simple handle to grip and the other hand turning the key is all it needs. We were very happy with our stay and would certainly use it again.

The owners have thought of everything to ensure everyone's comfort. From the exceedingly comfortable beds, with goose feather duvets to the well equipped kitchen. The cosy lounge was provided with a variety of games and pastimes to suit every age and with a multitude of books and local maps. The log-burning stove was one of the most efficient that we have experienced. We were glad of it during our Winter break. Our stay was cut short unfortunately due to the severe weather, 'the beast from the east' threw its full weight at us and so we left the cottage a day earlier than expected. There was a possibility of being 'snowed in', and then overstaying our allotted time. However should this have been the outcome we would have been extremely comfortable. We have all agreed to return to 'Willow View' later this year when the weather is more favourable.

About the location

STONEY MIDDLETON

Eyam 1.5 miles; Bakewell 5.5 miles; Chapel-en-le-Frith 14 miles.

The lovely village of Stoney Middleton is set in between some spectacular Derbyshire scenery, with Middleton Dale just beyond and the fantastic Froggatt Edge very close by. The village is surrounded by some of the prettiest countryside in the Peak District, including The Dale which provides some wonderful rock climbing, cycling and walks following the medieval packhorse track; known locally as Jacobs Ladder this can be walked from the centre of the village passing through Stoney woods and provides wonderful views of Curbar and Froggatt Edge in the distance. Stoney Middleton has an interesting past including the story of heartbroken young Hannah Baddaley who is said to have jumped from Lover’s Leap, at the top of Middleton Dale, after being spurned by her love. A visit to Eyam, just northwest of Stoney Middleton, is a must to see how parts of the village have been kept as they looked several centuries ago, such as the plague cottages, the church and Eyam Hall, a beautiful 17th century manor house with delightful gardens, craft shops and tea rooms. Above the village lies Eyam Moor, a fine area for walking, with fantastic views across the Derwent Valley, with its many Bronze Age remains and monuments. Visit Bakewell, a picturesque market town which holds a market every Monday and the home of the world famous Bakewell Pudding. Explore the mysterious caverns of Castleton, the elegant spa town of Buxton or enjoy the many stately homes on offer such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, to mention a few. With Alton Towers, Britain's premier theme park, only a short drive away, this is an ideal base for all the family.
