  • "We loved our stay in Barr Cottage."

It’s a super little place, clean, comfortable, well appointed and really homely and moments into the centre of beautiful Tideswell which we really fell in love with. This is an ideal place from which to explore this part of the Peak District on foot and in bikes, and a lovely place to come home to. The one slight difficulty was there was nowhere to put our bikes so we left them locked on the back of the car when not in use which seemed to be ok.

Tideswell has many nice cafes, essential shops, and found it easy to get to classic walks and sites of the Peak District. The car parking space directly in front of the cottage was really convenient. Good communication from the owners beforehand re check in/check out and other information about the cottage. Highly recommend and hope to stay again, thank you.

The cottage is in a great location, Tideswell is very central and there are some stunning walks literally on your doorstep. Definitely recommend the Chee Dale walk which is (hard work) but stunning! Our 2 year old and 5 year old loved it. The cottage was clean and well presented but could do with some modernisations in terms of the TV- there was a DVD player but due to covid restrictions they don’t have any DVDs. We brought some from a charity shop which was fine but would have been good to be able to log in to Netflix/Amazon through the TV. Other cottages we have stayed in have smart TVs so this simple upgrade would have made a big difference for us. Otherwise a great stay!

  • "Barr cottage is ideally situated in the delightful village for walks and places to visit around The Peaks."

There are 4 pubs in the village and we can recommend The George Inn which we ate in twice, The horse and Jockey which we ate in once (homity pie and veggie lasagne delicious) and the closest The Star which we also ate in once, (the veggie pie was delicious) We found all pubs very friendly and the food was really good (often hard to find being vegetarians). There is also a bistro with a very good veggie/vegan menu but with the random opening times we didn't get to try it. The cottage was well stocked with everything we needed and the patio garden spaces were lovely with gorgeous views. We personally don't feel the need for a bidet in the bathroom although the bathroom was a good size and modern. The only downside for us was the traffic noise early in the morning from about 5 a.m. We didn't realise the cottage was on one of the main roads through the village. We had the window open as it was warm at night and the lorries seemed to thunder past so unfortunately although the bed was comfortable we didn't sleep very well. All in all we would recommend the cottage if traffic noise doesn't bother you and we would definitely return to Tideswell.

Two areas for sitting out allowed us to take advantage of the little sunshine we had. Interior is bright and prettily decorated. Barr Cottage was warm and cosy even though it was cold and rainy outside. The ample hanging space for outdoor wear was appreciated.

The owners of the cottage sent a very informative email prior to arrival which was very helpful. I was a little anxious about the parking situation prior to the stay but parking on the road directly outside the cottage was actually no problem at all, it was a fairly quiet road and the space was always free. For our couple the set up was perfect : a very comfortable bedroom, a practical kitchen, a cosy fireplace corner to end the evenings and a gorgeous terrace above the cottage to wile away the end of the day with a glass of wine, kindly provided by the owners. This is the best cottage we have stayed in, both for the fittings and for the location, within walking distance of the family friendly George Inn (we went three times, including for some Shakespeare) and the perfect Merchant’s Yard. The owners had left us wine, biscuits, tea, coffee and milk which was very much appreciated. The cottage was better than the photos, quality furniture, spotlessly clean, big fluffy towels, comfy bed and the unforgettable flamingo bathroom. If I were to be very critical I would prefer a dishwasher to a washing machine, but that is maybe a personal preference. The garden is an unusual feature, with very steep steps to a patio overlooking the roofs of Tideswell. Whilst there is no designated parking, this was no problem as we parked outside the front door easily. The cottage is in a great location, a few minutes walk away from shops, pubs, we recommend the Horse and Jockey, and the central location makes an easy drive to almost anywhere in the Peak district. We would definitely stay here again.
