“Comfortable, homely, off-the-beaten track, beautiful converted barn”

Our family of six spent an October week at Gag Barn - the barn itself, and the surrounding countryside, exceeded our high expectations. The barn is a true home from home - it couldn't be more comfortable. Although easy to get to Tissington and Hartington, and a stunning walk away from the Old Dog pub in Thorpe, the barn is situated on a road that sees hardly any passing traffic - making the road ideal for our little ones to cycle along. We had a fantastic week here and hope we have an opportunity to visit again.

The barn is a true home from home - it couldn't be more comfortable. “This was an amazing get away.”

Beautiful surroundings in the middle of the peak district countryside, 5 carminutes from dovedale/the stepping stones. Many pubs in a 5 mile radius and public footpaths right on the doorstep. The house itself meet and maybe exceeded our expectations. We always love it when there is thought about the comfort of the furniture. The couches were really comfy and the sitting room overall was very cozy. Kitchen was really spacious and the equipments were fine. Just what we needed. Richard was a really nice host. Was there if you needed him. So, we would really recommend it to others or maybe we will be back in the future.

The seating areas and bedrooms are generally comfortable and the cottage is well designed and kitted out. Some suggestions: the property could do with a dishwasher and better outside furniture. WiFi was not always working. The kitchen (cupboards) were not very clean.

“Hard to find the cottage at first as the address sent in the email didn’t include the Lane it is on (which is vital as it isn’t on a road or in sight from a car), I would advise to add ‘gag lane’ on to the address given for this cottage Also, the photos don’t do the cottage justice- it is much larger and roomy than what the photos indicate, which was a pleasant surprise!”

Excellent host who is very helpful and there when you might require assistance however gives you the space and privacy you need for your break

I THINK THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE CLEAR to people booking the property as it is frankly not suitable for a holiday let especially in summer. Those of us with no experience of using one of these do not realise the difficulties. It takes a long time to get to heat and leaves you with a VERY hot kitchen for several hours. The temperature is not defined. It was impossible to do the quick cooked breakfast I had planned for the children before they went out on an activity day. It would have helped if there had been more details on how to use it.

The property

Tissington 3 miles.

Across the farmyard from the owners’ home on their non-working farm, is this lovely, detached three bedroom stone barn conversion.

This lovely cottage is situated in Newton Grange, three miles from the village of Tissington and five miles from the market town of Ashbourne and is surrounded by beautiful open Peak District countryside.

An ideal base for a family or group of six, this charming cottage has been tastefully furnished throughout and has a large breakfast kitchen and a comfortable sitting room with flame-effect fire.

On the first floor are two very spacious king-size double bedrooms and a luxury P-shaped bath with shower over.

The garden has a large patio and lawn that’s perfect for a barbecue, kick around or stargazing at the light pollution-free skies above.

The cottage is situated half a mile up a single track lane and so offers stunning walks and rides right from the door, and the breathtakingly beauty of Dovedale, the Manifold Valley and Carsington Water are short drives away.

Just five miles away is the bustling market town of Ashbourne with its cobbled streets, fine inns, restaurants and an increasing number of upmarket fashion shops.

There’s lots of heritage to be soaked up in the area and the famous Alton Towers Theme Park and Resort is just a 20 minute drive away.

You certainly won’t be stuck for things to do whatever time of year you go!

Tissington is a beautiful little village in the Peak District National Park. Famous for its well dressings, Tissington invites you to come along and soak up the atmosphere of this well-managed estate village with its duck pond, quaint cottages, church, tea rooms and impressive old hall. It's a very pretty village and a perfect place from which to enjoy the many sights of the Peak District. A fabulous area for outdoor pursuits, the Tissington Trail cycle path is located close by, little over a mile to the east of the village. Dovedale, one of England's photographed beauty spots with its iconic stepping stones, is close by and must not be missed! There are many varied walks, climbing opportunities and cycle routes in the area, and this is also an ideal base for days out at Alton Towers, impressive Chatsworth House, or enjoying the watersports at Carsington Water. The nearby market town of Ashbourne, once a fashionable social centre of the 18th century, boasts an eccentric street plan, with charming cobbled alleyways littered with old market stalls and welcoming coaching inns.
