  • "Cosy cottage in a quiet little village of Upper wellhouse, ideally located for touring the surrounding area and close enough to local amenities."

I would recommend this cottage to anyone.

  • "The premises were cold and damp, with black mould on the rear wall."

The bathroom door would not close, which was really inconvenient because it was directly off from the sitting room, this was most probably due to the damp conditions. No teapot nor chopping boards, we purchased the items from a charity shop and left them behind. This cottage was a real disappointment.

  • "We arrived to a very dirty cottage - urine on the toilet and drinks spilt on the kitchen counters."

A general musty smell in the cottage. Would not recommend. This seriously affected the enjoyment of our holiday. Otherwise listing accurate and we enjoyed exploring the location. For Sykes staff only - Refer to my complaint COR-117882-CF and understand that I was refused compensation despite the cottage owners being at fault

  • "It would be a struggle to think of anything to complain about, ( it wasn't us who stayed in the cottage) my son & his family from N Z experienced it for the best part of 3 weeks and they put a positive entry in the visitor book before they left on the 7th June."

They loved it, especially the location, the time of year & more so as they'd left the approaching winter in New Zealand behind to enjoy the spring sunshine here. They only mentioned one small fault , that one of the 2 patio chairs had a rusted broken lever and couldn't be used. It remains in the outhouse. There were sturdy kitchen chairs that were able to be used to replace this. They actually had very little time to sit & relax as they were travelling up & down the country during their stay visiting friends. They appreciated the peace & quiet of the countryside every morning when they woke up & the children loved it too, despite the youngest child who gained/cut 4 new teeth during their time here ! I hope the neighbours above them didn't suffer the pangs associated with that ! We had only to ask for something to be sorted, a minor issue, in the early part of their stay and it was dealt with promply. There were adequate facilities and space for the four of them and when they were out and about travelling we and a friend went over and used the cottage as a day base to go walking in the local area so it was enjoyed by us all. Sykes was recommended to me by a long term friend up in Northumberland whose brother & their family used Sykes on several occasions and always had a good experience. Her last stay was in a property in Marsden last year shortly before she died after a long illness and I will always be grateful that she enjoyed these annual breaks with her family and happily told all her friends how good & reliable the company was . So all in all.. Thank You to you all, the cleaners, & the owner who is lucky to own such a beautiful property and share it with others, Barbara & family in West Yorkshire.

Not a problem for us but maybe to others. No sink plug in bathroom and bathroom light pull cord not working properly only little things otherwise 100%. Thanks.

  • "Cottage is lovely."

Did not realize how far away from Any markets/stores/restaurants it was. Not enough toilet paper was left for full visit and no soap in bathroom. When tried to contact caretakers with questions prior to trip, Never received Any response. Having trees taken down & chipped on last day was probably not their fault but without notice (?) was also bothersome.

Thank you for your comments. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the Cottage. Due to the property being in a rural location the description states the nearest pub/shop is 1 mile away. The accommodation is self-catering so we only ask owners to provide enough essential items for 24 hours. We are sorry you were unable to reach the caretaker, Sykes are also here to answer any queries you have prior to your trip. In relation to the noise disruption from the Tree’s, this was unfortunately out of the owners control but he is now aware of this. Thanks again for your feedback and we hope to welcome you back in the future. Kind Regards Sykes Cottage Property Owner

About the location

GOLCAR

Slaithwaite 1.2 miles; Huddersfield 2.5 miles; Holmfirth 7.5 miles.

Golcar (pronounced 'Goh-ker' locally) is a village nestled on a hillside crest above the Colne Valley, 2.5 miles from Huddersfield, alongside the River Colne and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Golcar played an important part in the Industrial Revolution as a weaving centre, and with its rich textile heritage, it now provides a delightful holiday base, made up of charming cobbled streets and local shops including an award-winning farm shop and restaurant, Golcar Brewery, a butcher, bakery, delicatessen and a range of inns and eateries. Enjoy stunning walks through dramatic moorland countryside, along river or canalside to the quaint villages of Slaithwaite and Marsden on the one side of Golcar, or right into the heart of the large market town of Huddersfield, with its excellent leisure facilities and its fine Victorian architecture, in the other direction. Spend sunny afternoons in the nearby historic villages of Slaithwaite and Marsden - with their collections of unique shops and independent pubs serving locally-sourced artisan delights. Titanic Spar is also a 10 minute walk away at the bottom of the valley, offering a range of swim, sauna and bespoke spa treatments all year round. The village of Holmfirth, made famous by BBC TV's Last Of The Summer Wine series is also well worth a visit, less than eight miles away. Just nine miles away is the popular town of Halifax and its stunning architecture where you can visit the newly renovated 'Piece Hall.' Golcar is also perfectly placed for those who are interested in art and literature; the Bronte's Haworth and Ted Hughes/ Sylvia Plath's Hebden Bridge being located just a short journey away. And if you want to brave 'red rose' territory (Lancashire) and learn about the life and work of the navvies (as features in BBC's 'Jericho, filmed just a couple of miles away) you will want to visit both the Saddleworth Moors and Britain's longest canal tunnel – 'Tunnel End Visitor Centre'; only five miles away. Situated on the edge of the Peak District National Park; offering a wealth of wonderful outdoor activities amongst stunning scenery steeped in history and with numerous local festivals (Golcar Lily Day, Marsden Jazz Festival, the Cuckoo and Moonraking Festivals), Golcar provides an excellent base for your West Yorkshire getaway.
