“This was our fourth year in a row ...”
This was our fourth year in a row in Ivy Cottage and it was great to be back. While small, the cottage is comfortable and welcoming and is just right for 2 or 3 people. It is in an ideal location for peace, quiet and soothing views of the fields you are about to hike through! Parking is a bit tight for two cars but everyone locally is very friendly and accomodating. Walking is what we go to the Peak District for but this was our first visit in April and the first with dodgy weather - low mist and general dampness. The dales were pretty liquid but if you are properly equipped then this won't matter: the sources of hospitality are all open and provide a welcome refuge for drying out. We did the 'tourist sightseeing' bit for once and it was illuminating! Lots to go and see and do in terms of caves, castles, historic houses, cafes and markets: generally, we avoid the tyrrany of the car and concentrate on the microcosm but we learned a lot this year about the historical and commercial side of the White Peak. The few walks we did get in completed our inventory of the White Peak dales so this will be our last visit here - on to the Dark Peak and a different base! But we'll miss Ivy Cottage and Tideswell.

About the location
Buxton 9 miles; Bakewell 9 miles.
The village of Tideswell stands in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Famous for its fine church dedicated to St John the Baptist, known as "The Cathedral of the Peak", the village is also noted for its well dressing and carnival wakes. There is excellent walking with rugged peaks to the north, gentle hills and dales to the south and Millers Dale just outside the village. Mam Tor and Castleton are only a few miles away and the popular Spa town of Buxton is within a 15 minute drive. Tideswell has many fine country inns, a chemist, butchers, bakers and much more including a convenient supermarket open daily until 10pm. The pretty little market town of Bakewell is also just a short drive away and well worth a visit.
