The cottage is comfortable, warm and well equipped. We soon felt at home and would be very happy to return. Tideswell has a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants, a frequent bus service and lovely walks from the village.

  • "The property is clean and well located in the village and the wider Peak District."

It is reasonably well provided for in terms of equipment. Comfortable it is not. The sofas are very cheap and uncomfortable for even a reasonable period. The mattresses on the singles are truly awful, with the front double not being much better. The springs come through making for a very uncomfortable night; whilst the front is better it is still not great. There is a VERY unpleasant smell in the bathroom of damp and urine. This is not a failure of cleanliness, but maintenance. Broken remote TV control - how much does it cost to replace? Attitude of the owner is terrible. A failure in communication led to us having to wait 5 hours to gain entrance. Owner failed to answer over 12 phone calls/texts. This is treated as a hobby not a business and is reflected in the cheap furnishings, damp and broken remote.

We were saddened to read this review which does not reflect all the positive and excellent reviews that we have had regarding our cottage. We would like to respond to your various points as our aim is for everyone to have a lovely time in our home while staying in this stunning area and we particularly care about what is said, taking all feedback seriously. In regard to the furniture, the sofa next to the radiator in the lounge is actually from a highly regarded furniture shop (Ponsfords in Sheffield). We accept that the comfort of furniture is down to personal taste and we are sorry that you found the sofas uncomfortable. With regard to the beds, we would like to point out that we offer accommodation for 6 guests in 3 bedrooms; you booked for 2 people and did not mention the comfort of the king size bed in the master bedroom which is a mystery to us. As we use the cottage with our family, we have slept in all the beds, but will of course look at this again. The smell in the bathroom was certainly news to us, as no other guests have found this to be the case and we have not recognised this as an issue when we have stayed on a fairly regular basis. We have just been to Rosskeen again for another maintenance visit since your stay (Oct 23) and could not smell what you describe. We were pleased that you thought the property was extremely clean but we have to disagree about the smell of urine. We stayed in the cottage to do maintenance three weeks before you stayed and replaced the remote control with a brand new one. It was purchased from Amazon on 16th August 23 before your stay in September. In October on a further visit, I checked the remote as soon as we arrived at the cottage. On turning on the TV I was able to change all the channels with no problem at all; therefore the remote control was certainly usable. However when I turned it over, I noticed that someone had stuck the back on (where the batteries are placed) with blue tack and sellotape. It appears therefore that guests prior to you at some point between the middle of August and your stay in September must have broken the catches on the back but not informed us. This however, did not affect the use of the TV at all. As we are sure you will appreciate, we are totally reliant on communication so that we can fix things as quickly as possible. Had you told us we could have (and would have) sent a replacement to you during your stay. Incidentally, a second new one has now been ordered for the next guests. We totally accept that there was a particular issue upon your arrival in relation to the key collection and changeover. We fully accepted at the time that there had been a breakdown in communication and apologised profusely for the inconvenience caused, responding as soon as we found your answerphone message. We were saddened that you did not mention in your review that when we made contact, we offered you an extra night in our cottage free of charge, (which you were unable to take) as we totally understood and empathised with your frustration at not being able to enter the cottage at the agreed time. We then offered you a later check-out time so that you had full use of the cottage on your day of departure, which you did not respond to. You received a free meal at the George Hotel in the village which we hope you enjoyed as recompense for this unprecedented situation. During that first evening we asked you to let us know, once you were settled, if there were any issues. You chose not to do this but to write your grievances in a public review after your stay when it was then too late for us to act. We are extremely sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at Rosskeen. The photos do not do the cottage full justice as it is very spacious and well equipped with everything you need and more for a self catering holiday. We were there for an 80th birthday celebration and not only was the cottage perfect for the 5 of us but Tideswell village also has everything you need and all within 5 minutes walk from the cottage. Lots of lovely walks available from the village too. We would definitely stay in this cottage again and certainly want to explore more of the area.

After a long drive we arrived but no key left in the agreed location. After ringing the owner we had to wait 20 minutes for the cleaner to arrive to let us in. We then discovered the property hadn't been cleaned so we had to wait a further 45 minutes for this to be undertaken. Very surprising given Covid considerations! The remainder of our stay went as planned. The cottage is an in an ideal location and well equipped.

Very well equipped with excellent wifi. Three roomy bedrooms and a cosy lounge. Kitchen has all you would need and the cottage is clean and well kept. The first floor double bed is a little hard but the attic bedroom is lovely and comfortable and surprisingly warm in winter. There was an issue with the television which was not a big deal for us at all but the owners insisted on replacing the TV and even sending an engineer when the new installation didn't work. • "We booked Rosskeen for 1 month and sadly it did not meet expectations in cleanliness and comfort."

The lounge was small and not homely with a sofa which did not support your back and a TV which was out of date many years ago. The DVD player did not work either. The carpet in the hallway was filthy and my wife scrubbed it and it is now cleaner than when we arrived. Many cobwebs in the house, left a few for the cleaner behind the curtain near the back door. Cost £1969 and not worth it. No issues with Tideswell a very pretty village. *****OWNER RESPONSE***** We are very sorry to hear these comments about our cottage. We were aware you were staying for 27 nights and invited you to contact us with any issues or questions. We therefore feel saddened that you didn't contact us at all while you were in the cottage. The cottage is extremely well equipped and, as we regularly stay there ourselves, we feel able to say from experience how it may work for guests. We did offer a cleaner for the house during your stay but this offer was declined: we did however provide you with fresh sheets so that you could change the beds if you so wished. It is expected that after one month in any property cobwebs will appear, this is natural. It is interesting to note we actually stayed in the cottage the week before you arrived and also stayed for the weekend after you left and so feel very well equipped to comment that the cottage was extremely clean. In relation to the other points you raise; we tested the DVD player: the switch was turned off at the plug on the extension lead and just needed to be turned on. The TV has a good picture and a Talk Talk box has been installed so that digital freeview channels can be viewed: This area of Derbyshire was one of the last to have the analogue signal switched off. We were surprised by your comments in relation to the lounge. It is a typical Derbyshire stone cottage which features a cosy lounge. We have ensured however that there is seating for six people. The sofas all have proper backs and you may not have noticed but the black sofa is a recent addition to the cottage (and is different from the small brown sofa pictured on the website and much more comfortable). The second sofa nearer the window is also comfortable and can in fact be made into a chaise longue with the addition of the footstool which adds a new dimension if so needed. The bedrooms are very spacious and the kitchen diner is a nice size. We have had many highly positive and lovely reviews with repeat bookings and therefore felt the need to respond particularly due to your insistence that your comments were published. However it has saddened us that you chose to air these views so publicly without giving us any opportunity to help you during your stay. *****
