  • "Disappointing."

The general cleanliness of the cottage was a problem, and what cleaning gear was available was dirty. The vacuum threw out more dirt than it collected, and I had to clean the mould out of the washing machine prior to using it. The bedding was tired and worn, the pillows and mattress topper stained. The dust bins overflowing and as such were got at by the wildlife. No firewood was available, so we had to buy it locally. No toilet rolls were provided and no milk with which to make a cup of tea after our long journey. Although we arrived at 4 pm (one hour after the official check-in) the floors in the cottage were wet from a recent mop, yet my dog still managed to find a sizable piece of broken wine glass down one side of the sofa. When I looked in the visitor’s book, the comments were mostly negative and centred on cleanliness issues – cobwebs, dust, and the mouldy washing machine. On Saturday morning, the owner of the cottage and a colleague decided to strim the grass in the small garden area. Unfortunately, my car was parked below the raised garden in the designated parking area and as such got covered in mud and grass trimmings. My car had been fully valeted prior to our journey, so to say that I was annoyed at this careless and avoidable incident would be putting it mildly. It then began to rain, so I was picking bits of grass off my car and dealing with muddy streaks for the rest of our stay. We didn’t let this spoil our holiday though. We will be returning to the Peaks in the near future, but we will be using another Sykes cottage, which we have already selected. We regularly use Sykes and have never felt the need to complain about any of the cottages that we have used. As the price of renting this cottage will be increasing next season (£50 for the same dates), I hope that the owners will look into improving the basic services that they provide. On a positive note, thank you for the dozen eggs which were very much appreciated.

Really let down by the cleanliness The place needs a good deep clean. Dog hair and dust everywhere, dog food/treats in second bedroom, kitchen the walls, the red paint shows up all splash marks and food splash needs repainting or a good clean! All made for an uncomfortable few days stay I'm afraid. Place wasn't ready for 3pm but didn't affect us. Towels were still being dried for us in the dryer when we arrived at 6pm and there was no toilet roll. However owner did go to the shops and brought some back for us. On reading the guest book, items listed in 2017 and later remarks are still unresolved. No egg cups, No oven trays, Dish washer has power switch permanently connected, hoover attachment pipe broken, Ovens need professioonal cleaning, hob badly marked, fridge frrezes liquids and door shelf broken at one end, shaver socket inoperative master bedroom, no wardrobe in second bedroom clothes had to be left on a chair, skirting boards not fixed to walls, both beds in second bedroom very noisy and suspicious stain on bottom sheet on one bed. The accomodation needs attention to detail in the cleaning towels smelt fusty. Hoover was full to the brim and the cupboard where it was stored was dirty, as was the under sink cupboard. In short it was the accomodation could have been lovely and lacked attention to detail and cleaning. Our remarks only echo previous occupants over a number of years, which is a shame because the accomodation could have been so much better with a little TLC.

16:30 to be told the accommodation wasn't quite ready for us, so we had to wait outside for 20 minutes. The accommodation made it well worth the wait though! The host was very nice and offered recommendations for places to visit and popular eateries. A Welcome Pack would have added a little something upon arrival. The accommodation was warm, spacious, relatively clean (there was a few gatherings of dog fur and dust here and there), smelt fresh and was very well equipped. We didn't need the twin room but noticed there wasn't a wardrobe in there. The shower in the twin room ensuite was fantastic, as was the huge bathtub in the double room ensuite. The kingsize bed was very comfortable. The oven could use a professional clean. Overall this was an amazing find, at a fantastic price and I will definitely be recommending it to friends and family.

Lovely big cottage, cannot fault the size of the property. Extra bonus for having excellent wifi and a chrome cast on the TV. There are a few points that lets this place down, the main one being cleanliness. There is dust everywhere, I had to clean the bath before I used it as the rim was covered in dust. The towel rails were covered in dust which prevented me from using them. In the second bedroom there is nowhere to hang your clothes. I appreciate this is a dog friendly cottage and I had dogs with me, however the cushions on the sofa in the lounge are covered with dog hair, as well as the fabric chair and throws. The outside of the building I feel lets it down, there is weeds everywhere especially on the stairs, it doesn't look inviting. The general outside is just very messy. This property just needs some TLC to get it up to 5 stars.

The location is amazing for exploring the Peak District (even starting a hike from the door step). It's interior is tastefully designed. The cottage had everything we needed. On the downside, there were large balls of dog hair under the beds, dressers and in the corners. The couch table shelf had clearly not been wiped in months and neither had the bathroom towel rails. However, showers, sink, bathtub and toilets were clean. There was a slightly musty smell in the towels and bed linen. The king size mattress was worn through and in our opinion should be replaced. The WiFi was very unreliable. It is a real shame as the cottage has such a great potential. Once we had done a deep clean we felt comfortable and really enjoyed the rest of our stay.

The kitchen was woefully ill equipped, non matching glasses and chipped bowls and very little in the way of cooking utensils, jugs, casserole dishes, etc. we found one baking sheet in the bottom oven drawer which was very dirty. The fridge completely froze our salad stuff too. The main en suite was grubby and there was a terrible smell the whole time we were there. The mattress was also very thin. However, there were good points. The cottage was tastefully furnished and the views were to die for. The owner was very friendly and our dog was made most welcome. It was peaceful and cosy. The Hayloft is well equipped with plenty of space for storing clothes and food. The WiFi is excellent if needed. The owner was very helpful in sharing local knowledge of walks and places to visit and eat. Most importantly for me, The Hayloft is genuinely dog friendly and the owner did not object to my dog being on the sofa. Other supposedly dog friendly cottages i have looked at have been restrictive in this sense which may not be an issue for some, but I am one of those "bad dog owners" who does allow their dog on the furniture. Mark, the owner, was really helpful both in the days before we arrived and once we got there. Let us settle in, then came and checked that all was ok, had we found everything etc. The property is very large, it is after-all a converted hayloft, but the sense of space hits you as you walk in. All the rooms are very spacious, even the two en-suites. Having a bath as well as a 2 showers was luxury after a day on the peaks. The decor is very fitting for the building, lots of bare wood and stonework. The furniture matches the style, large plain wood pieces that just look like they belong there. The kitchen had all we needed, the icebox on the fridge is standard size, but with Morrisons only 5 minutes away it didn’t matter. The electric cooker is a range style, with plenty of hobs as well as a warming drawer. Yes, it is a converted hayloft, there are a few cobwebs up in the rafters, you do find insects outside, you can hear the sheep in the fields, the lanes are narrow, but thats some of the many reason why this place is so great - its not a hotel, its a place to have a great holiday and make memories. Not to mention ‘Poppy’ the sheepdog, whom our son wanted to try and sneak home with us....... A few older reviews had mentioned about lack of cleanliness, we didn’t find this at all. Everywhere was very clean and tidy on arrival. We spoke to the owners about this, and they told us that they had changed cleaners a while ago. Nothing to worry about. We had a superb time and would love to return again.

The en suite bathrooms worked well in general (but see below for some problems) and the kitchen is efficient. As we experienced it, it is a peaceful place to stay. Since we there at Christmas-time, we had no opportunity to use the garden space, so can't comment on that. Not so good: the smaller, twin-bed bedroom has no wardrobe, or any other way to hang up clothes. The bathroom for the larger bedroom was poorly lit, because the light over the mirror wasn't working, so shaving was a tricky business. Only one of the bathrooms was equipped with a toilet brush. In the kitchen, a lack of light over the stove made cooking more difficult than it needed to be, and we found no dustpan and brush, so cleaning up after ourselves was difficult. Overall, though, the good points easily outweighed the negatives: this is a very comfortable place to stay, and we enjoyed ourselves. Finding the track that leads to the property proved difficult in the dark, but the owner was patient and helpful, providing guidance over the phone.

We had to wait 15 minutes after entry time and cleaners were rushing to leave. Drawers and cupboards, particularly in the kitchen, have grit/hair residue. One particularly deeply buttoned chair was so grubby we unfolded throws to cover it so we felt comfortable to use it, but the throws had quite a bit of dog hair on them! Curtains are hanging droopily in places. Kitchen/cooking equipment is minimal. Fine for us as just a long weekend and we ate out. But if you’re a family of 4 planning on comprehensive self catering it might be tricky. The fridge is very small and a Christmas roast wouldn’t be viable. Mugs and plates are chipped/worn. We couldn’t find any trays. The nature of the building means natural light is slightly limited, which wouldn’t be a problem if artificial lighting compensated. Lighting is dim. Probably this is less noticeable in summer than it was in November. There is a chest of drawers in the twin room, however no wardrobe. It is very warm and there is lots of space. Logs were provided for the woodburner which worked really well. There is a warm boiler room for drying coats and boots which was useful. The beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms very attractive and luxurious and there’s a nice big dining table; great for board games and spreading your maps out. The TV provision is great with a good selection of blue ray/DVDs. Our impression is the original conversion and set up was high end and polished. The ongoing maintenance of this seems to be not quite as strong which is a shame as it wouldn’t take much effort or expense to bring it back up, just a bit of care and attention to detail.

There's also plenty to do on days when the weather disobliges. We wouldn't hesitate to return.

  • "Despite choosing the wettest week for some time we did have good holiday with our two springer spaniels."

We could hang our wet gear in the boiler room below the upstairs accommodation. Some coat hooks on the wall inside the door of the cottage would have been useful as we had to drape our coats on the back of the dining chairs. That is the only thing I would add to the place. This is probably one of the best cottages we have stayed in as it felt really spacious and was very comfortable both in the evenings and sleeping. The bed was very comfortable. There were only two of us but it would have been fine sharing with another couple as there are two en suite bathrooms. We did a few walks directly from the cottage and also several places within a half hour drive in the Peak District. We were visited by family and friends on different days and had a lovely lunch at The Beehive in the nearby village of Combs. We would certainly book this place again to do more things we didn’t have time for due to the very wet weather on several days.

The apartment is very large, comfortable and well-equipped. It's in a wonderful area with endless outdoor fun to be had - I drove just 10-15 mins each day to hike or run a different area with my dog and loved the 1.5 mile commute across fields to the pub. The owner was welcoming and lives just next door, the neighbours were equally friendly.

The views are spectacular. Only disappointment was that the bath is lovely but there wasn’t enough hot water to fill it, on the up side the showers made up for it. I would highly recommend thus property

Would recommend the cottage but the cleaning needs more attention to detail. Beautiful views, quiet and relaxing. A welcome pack would have been good as a drive to shops for milk after a 5 hour drive was disappointing. All in all lovely break.

  • "This is lovely spacious accommodation in a beautiful setting."

There is some truly outstanding scenery in the area -great walks, drives and interesting places to visit - and the Hayloft is very well located to get around. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Nice to have walks from the door for the dogs and because I was working in Manchester for some of the time it as great to have two train stations close by with regular reliable services. I would happily return.

  • "The Hayloft is a beautiful cottage, set in picturesque countryside, very well situated for visiting the Peak District."

We enjoyed a fantastic week of walking and relaxing in this idillic countryside. The only complaint was that as the property was listed as 5* I would have expected it to have been freshly cleaned as I assume this is reflected in the cost of stay. On arrival the property was very dusty, all hard surfaces had a layer of dusty dirt, this was in bedrooms, bathrooms, the bath was dusty and had a bird feather in it, the top of the range cooker was dusty, the dinning room table and coffee table the same. This was very disappointing and I contacted the owner regarding the condition as I felt we should have been arriving at a clean property, also there was mouldy bread and rancid butter left in a cupboard by previous guests, again I feel we are paying for the property to have been clean and checked before our arrival. It was a disappointing first impression as the cottage in all other areas ticks every other box. It certainly wasn't 5*cleaning!
