  • "Absolutely beautiful location, with amazing views."

Cottage is spacious and had all the equipment we needed, 3 en suite bedrooms felt really luxurious. Thank you for a lovely weekend.

  • "Beds very comfortable, but an armchair would give better seating comfort."

Clean but several items of clothing left by previous guests not been removed. Very good kitchen and bathrooms, but would like a washing machine. Gradually making good repairs and building structural maintenance. Views and gardens lovely.

  • "Visiting the Victorian Gardens properties for the 9th year, first time in April, we found the 'new look' paintwork and decor very pleasing."

The light fittings were brighter and the clean appearance is always welcome, thanks again to the cleaning and maintenance staff.

  • "We loved the view from the lounge but we were unaware of all the steps to the door which were difficult to navigate with luggage."

There was no instructions for any of the appliances, no visitor’s book, the bed broke, luckily the gardener managed to fix it and we came back one evening to find a bat flying around in the lounge, when I tried to get assistance from the mobile numbers no one answered.

  • "Amazing views, great location and a tranquil setting."

We were three couples and having an en-suite in each room was ideal. The outside area was perfect for relaxing after a long walk. One recommendation if you wish to go for an evening out is to ensure you book a taxi well ahead of time. We tried booking on the day and every company was booked up! Also, the instructions to the property need updating as we got a little lost, taking the wrong left after the mill. Overall would highly recommend if staying in the area.

  • "In a lovely location with a great view."

Property needed some TLC. Lots of spiders, dirty windows, dead flies and moths in ceiling blinds etc.. No hot water first day, but soon resolved. Outdoor furniture needs replacing. Beds clean, albeit we all found them too firm. The glass room was uncomfortably hot in the sun and needed air conditioning.

  • "We had a fantastic stay at High Spy Cottage."

Clear check-in instructions, very clean, all as advertised. Well furnished, comfortable, excellent facilities including en suite bathrooms to all bedrooms. The large garden was a real hit, with beautiful views of Monsal Dale. Emily communicated clearly and was helpful. Highly recommend.

  • "Gorgeous. You’re instantly relaxed the moment you walk in, sit on one of the huge, comfortable sofas and soak up the view across the valley above the Monsal trail."

Very well equipped and spacious with all the amenities such as broadband TV. Huge patio with furniture in a beautiful setting. A short drive from all that the Peak District has to offer, or simply walk out down to the trail. We’ll be coming back.

  • "Had a great week, fantastic location with stunning views."

Lovely walks from the property. Directions for finding the property really should say to follow the signs for the Victorian Garden which are easy to spot from the road. Garden is not enclosed so could be a problem for people with small children / dogs.

Only slight negative was we could hear the people next door but thankfully they weren't too noisy but this could be an issue if you get noisy people during your stay

  • "The directions to our cottage were very very poor."

After arriving in the general area we drove around for about half an hour before asking a local who gave specific and simple directions. Our cottage, High Spy, was down a track at the head of which was a board indicating Victorian Gardens. If the directions had included this information we would have found our cottage much earlier, since we had passed this point several times but thought the path just led to some gardens. Much clearer directions from either Litton or Monsal Head should be provided to this group of cottages. Fortunately the rest of our holiday was very good.

  • "The property was not as clean as I would have expected especially during covid."

Crockery had been put away dirty and we needed to hoover the sofas between the cushions. Advance notice that the laundry facilities were unavailable would have been helpful. Lighting was v poor - limited and bulbs not working and lack of normal facilities eg welcome hamper, no oven gloves etc. Nice property but below usual standards

We also had a bit of a fly problem, which was unfortunate but didn't detract from our stay. Would recommend the area but not sure we'd stay in High Spy again.

  • "This was an absolutely brilliant cottage, the facilities were great and location amazing."

We arrived in the dark so when we woke on our first morning it was the first time we could take everything in. The only downsize is that the door between the two accommodations was very thin so we could hear exactly what the people next door were saying. That didn't detract at all from an amazing stay though

  • "The cottage and location are both outstanding."

The key collection was easy, the cottage was clean with basic provisions provided. The curry delivery on the first night was an unexpected bonus. Our only complaints and they are minor ones are that the sofas were not that comfortable for the shorter members of our group and one of us found the bed hurt their back; however, we've rebooked for next year, so clearly overall we were really happy with it all.

Lovely, bright and clean. Lovely facilities. Towels and lots of toiletries provided. Gorgeous gardens. Our dog had a wonderful time exploring the grounds. The cottage is in a wonderful location, unspoilt and at night, no light pollution at all.

  • "Myself, my daughter and my two grandchildren aged 4 and 1 have just returned from High Spy Cottage in Cressbrook."

The cottage was very well appointed and in a spectacular location. We both like to cook and the kitchen was well equipped with pans, dishes, utensils etc. The children loved the outside area to run and let off steam. With toddlers it's always a worry that the high chair and travel cots would be ok but these were of high quality and clean. We hope to return next year!

The location is absolutely beautiful with a gorgeous view from the cottage and the cottage is in beautiful condition with everything you need. They even found us a sledge for the snow! A fair few great country to pubs to explore within a couple of miles, and you can set off on walks right from the door. Easy to drive around many parts of he Peak District as the cottage is sort of in the middle.

This was not our initial booking our original cottage was withdrawn so i had to re search at last minute and was concerned that last minute would mean we might not be adequately situated however we found High Spy Cottage and on arrival we were so pleased as it was really lovely the views are breathtaking and the cottage is really homely, clean, well equiped and in an excellent area for walking our puppy she loved it especially the stream which runs through the valley near the old mill I would happily return to the cottage and will recommend it to friends Just be mindful that although the cottage is on one level there is a step down from the kitchen and first bedroom and there are a number of steps down to the cottage - there is a slope down to the left albeit a little steep so may not suit very disabled Otherwise not to be missed

About the location

CRESSBROOK

Tideswell 3 miles; Bakewell 4 miles.

Cressbrook is located on the River Wye and its focal point is the wonderful mill, which was built in 1779 by the famous Richard Arkwright. The surrounding area has some of the prettiest scenery in the Peak District. Follow the footpath upstream of Cressbrook Mill to Water-cum-Jolly, a beautiful river gorge with fine limestone cliffs, which is superb for rock climbers, birdwatchers and walkers. North of the mill lies the lane to Ravensdale, which is adjacent to Cressbrook Dale, a fine gorge-like limestone dale with numerous crags and the remains of several lead mines. Cressbrook Dale is a National Nature Reserve renowned for its range of rare flowers. South of the mill you pass through the lovely Upper Dale and Nether Dale leading up to the famous landmark of Monsal Head, which is on the Monsal Trail. This provides a wonderful “behind the scenes” view of this beautiful part of Derbyshire. Close by is the lovely little village of Litton, which has a village green outside the wonderful food-serving pub, The Red Lion, and a well-stocked village shop. Visit nearby Tideswell in the heart of the Peak District National Park with its fine church dedicated to St John the Baptist, known as "The Cathedral of the Peak", country inns, local eateries, wells dressing and carnival wakes. There is excellent walking with rugged peaks to the north and gentle hills and dales to the south, while Mam Tor and Castleton are only a few miles away with the popular Spa town of Buxton nearby.
