  • "Generally the property proved reasonable, the rooms were spacoius and facilities o."

K.. The only negative items were the cleanliness of the windows, although we assumed this was due to difficult access, and the Kitchen was in need of some refurbishment. The location was excellent for getting out and about and, travelling was easy to visit the tourist sites. The biggest plus were the "ducks" and we would loved to have taken them home! Although we have stayed in better properties we would recommend this one primarily for it's location.

Very comfortable - the gas central heating meant every room was warm and toasty. The location is really special. Some previous feedback questioned the cleanliness - we found the property spotless and tidy. We particularly appreciated how well the kitchen was stocked with crockery and the equipment you would need for a holiday. We would definitely book the same property again!

Well equipped. So well situated next to the huge mill pond and weir We saw a kingfisher on both days! A friendly female duck with only one eye came to see us and wanted to come into the house but we turned the poor thing away. The noise of the water tumbling over the weir is loud, but the double glazing keeps most of the noise out of the house. Open a window or the French doors to enjoy the roar. We had a really enjoyable stay. Thank you.

The wifi code was missing on the first day but after phoning the owner he sent that to us really quickly by text. If I am being fussy the beds were quite hard and the outside doors / windows really need a clean but I wouldn’t let that prevent me from returning. We found the cottage to be very spacious but we were only 2 people sharing.

  • "This is a lovely and surprisingly roomy 2 bedroom property in a beautiful location with great access to all the local attractions."

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would certainly consider returning. A small number of issues that did cause us some inconvenience though - the property is listed as having a 'smart TV' but it does not so we had to go out and buy an Amazon Fire Stick in order to watch Netflix, Prime and so on. The other issues related to the WiFi - this is shared with the neighbouring property and signal is ok in the main body of the house, but the lounge is a side extension and the signal was very weak in there - again we bought a WiFi booster at our own expense to extend the coverage. Another issue I encountered was the the internet is supplied by TalkTalk and due to settings they have in place I could not remote in to my office when connected to it (yes I know I was on holiday, but you never really are when you run your own business!). I did report the issue to Carlo, the owner who said he would contact TalkTalk but nothing was done about it up until the point we left.

We did encounter a few problems, the tv instructions were a bit vague but we called the owner and he explained what to do, also the electrics tripped but we found the consumer box and sorted it out, a holiday information folder would be very useful with details of the cottage, were to eat and attractions near by. We did have a problem with the gate code and we were unable to gain access due to a faulty lock one day, this resulted in us asking a neighbour to borrow a ladder and we did managed to unlock the gates, we phoned the owner and he came down and took the faulty lock off. Overall we had a lovely stay and would return.

  • "The cottage is well located within Cromford & is spacious, however that is where the positives stop."

The day after we arrived we contacted Mr Grossi to report the vile state of the oven & extractor. Both were covered in thick grease & clearly had not been cleaned for months even though feedback had been provided from a previous guest earlier this month. Mr Grossi said that he would arrange for someone to come out the same day to have a look. No such visit took place & he didn't even have the courtesy to speak to us again. We reported this to Sykes Cottages on the Monday morning, they contacted Mr Grossi again, but still nothing. The extractors in both the main bathroom & the ensuite do not work & so paint is now coming off the ceiling. Once again these issues were included in feedback as far back as June 2019, but once again nothing has clearly been done.

I am terribly sorry that the stay did not match your expectations. I am sorry that I could not tend to extraction fan not working and the oven not being to your standards but we were unable to get someone out at short notice. We do provide spare light bulbs for the property and understand that some of our guests would prefer not to attend to changing these themselves during their stay. I would like to assure yourself and our future guests that the all points raised were tended to following your stay. Thank you very much for your comments and for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. Customer feedback is very important to help us continually improve our standards. Property Owner

  • "We had a very pleasant stay at Weir Cottage but unfortunately it was somewhat spoiled by the cleanliness of the kitchen."

The oven had not been cleaned for some time and there was a dirty grill pan which reeked of the smell of fish which went through the entire oven. Some of the pans were unusable due to caked in dirt and rust. Considering the extra time we had to allow for the cleaning we did not find this acceptable, we have informed the owner of our findings and he said he would be visiting to check on things perhaps this should be done in between each let.

The weir is quite noisy but you soon get used to it and the wildlife makes up for that anyway, we saw a wide variety including swans, ducks, moorhens, coots and a heron - the cottage even has binoculars and a bird spotting book for you to use should you wish. Cromford is a lovely village with many things to do within walking distance so it was really nice to leave the car at the cottage on a couple of days and enjoy walking around visiting Cromford Mills, Cromford Canal and generally looking around and about. Parking is a bit of a drawback if the other cottage is occupied and we had to purchase most of expected supplies of paper towels, dishwashing tablets, laundry powder, sugar, teabags and bin liners. There were no containers in which to pack a picnic. Apart from these relatively minor irritants, it was an acceptable cottage.

We cook in every day & could probably use a few more dishes and sharp knives, altho I usually take my own. The sofas & cushions are getting very tired and probably due for a change. The double bed mattress is also very tired & again due for a change. Unfortunately the Wi-if signal is pretty poor & affects watching the TV fire stick which is essential if you want to watch the tv & mobile. Phone reception is poor. I did have a word with the owner about this & I believe he is going to put a booster socket in. Otherwise lovely cottage, in a great location & we loved listening to the soothing sound of the weir.

  • "I already have extremely high "expectations" of Sykes, having booked several lovely cottages through them in the past, so it would take something spectacular to warrant "exceeded expectations"!"

They "met" my expectations, as always. Weir Cottage was in a very convenient location, right in the middle of the village, close to pubs, restaurants, chip shops(2!), a well stocked general store, and a huge bookshop, whilst feeling quiet (except for the constant noise of the weir!) and secluded. There are regular buses from just around the corner from the cottage to places further afield as well as a train station, about half a mile away. Masson Mill shopping village is a short walk away and there is a lovely walk along the canal basin. We found plenty to do in and around the village despite the disappointing weather. In fact, we only used the car once, in a week, to visit nearby Carsington Water. The cottage was clean, comfortable and welll equipped. I appreciated the thoughtful provision of fleecy blankets in the living room, as it did get a bit chilly, on the sofa furthest from the radiator, in the evenings. (They would have been useful if the weather had been decent enough to sit outside, on the provided patio chairs, too!) The owner was friendly and helpful but unobtrusive, arriving very quickly to fix a problem with the boiler. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage to families or couples (but see previous review about lack of hanging space in the second bedroom - just 2 coat hangers on the back of the door - not a problem for me, but some may find that inadequate). Young children would need to be closely supervised though, due to the proximity of the unfenced mill pond.
