  • “Very comfortable, cosy and relaxing”
We stayed here as a family of four, for a week in October and it was fantastic. I don't feel that the photos actually do the cottage, its facilities and surroundings full justice. We stayed here as a family of four, for a week in October and it was fantastic. I don't feel that the photos actually do the cottage, its facilities and surroundings full justice. The cottage itself is extremely cosy and warm (I didn't know what to expect from under floor heating but it was really warm) and had everything we needed in the kitchen with bed linen, towels and cosy blankets provided. There is a bath and a separate shower upstairs plus an additional toilet down stairs. Sky TV was a great bonus. There isn't a washing machine so families need to bear this in mind but there is a drying rack which we used for our swimming cosies. The entrance hall is nice and big with good storage for coats and shoes etc. The facilities were perfect, our boys made full use of the full sized table tennis table and pool table and the pool just next door, which we had all to ourselves (the shepherds hut which is also on the site was not booked out but this only sleeps two and is sheltered behind a hedge away from the cottage which keeps it private). It felt like such a treat and was so relaxing. It was easy to get to and find but feels remote when you are there and the living room doors open straight onto a wonderful view of fields and woodlands and there is very little light pollution so it was great to see the stars at night. The only interruptions were from the pheasants wandering past the windows in the morning. It is only about 5 miles to Uttoxeter which has Waitrose and Tesco (we got a Tesco delivery on the first night which saved a lot of hassle) and its well located for a lot of activities, we went to Jodrell Bank, Twycross Zoo and Splash World at Alton Towers, but there is also Sudbury Hall (National Trust), Monkey Forest, and Adventure Farm and Brewery tours at Burton on Trent, all close by. The cottage owners were really friendly and welcoming and have created a lovely holiday retreat.

About the location

MARCHINGTON

Uttoxeter 5 miles; Ashbourne 15 miles.

The scattered village of Marchington is set in some beautiful rural countryside in the boundaries of the Marchington Woodlands, within easy reach of the Peak District National Park. Marchington is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and offers some beautiful walks as it runs adjacent to the River Dove. The village has a couple of friendly pubs with The Dog and Partridge serving good food, The Barn Indian Restaurant, a small shop and two churches. The village is situated five miles from the bustling Staffordshire town of Uttoxeter with its popular racecourse, golf club, and cinema. NT Sudbury Hall and its Museum of Childhood are very close by, offering a fascinating insight into days gone by. The market town of Ashbourne is within driving distance, with its eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys and quaint coaching inns. Ashbourne is something of a haven for antique hunters, boasting superb shops, as well as offering a variety of good pubs and restaurants. The Dove and Manifold Valleys are also nearby, and with both Tittesworth and Carsington Reservoirs and the thrills of Alton Towers an easy drive, this is a beautiful and relaxing location to enjoy all year round.
