  • "Home from home."

The cottage was surprisingly very warm, the bedding was lovely, all the furniture was comfy and it was very well equipped with everything you could possible need. I’d definitely book again

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Robin Cottage."

We were a family of 4 adults and a dog. The house had everything you needed for a comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable stay. The views from any point in and around the cottage are amazing. The enclosed garden is safe for dogs and children. You do have to access the garden by going out the front door but not a huge inconvenience. There are sensor lights in both the front and back of the cottage for the evenings when the dog needed to go out. A trip to Ashbourne, Dovedale and Ilam are absolutely recommended. As is Bakewell. It’s also an excellent location for Alton Towers. The area is great for walking and cycling including the Manifold and Tissington trail and the High Peak. Louise is a wonderful host. Would highly recommend and will certainly return.

From sitting in the garden or looking through the window at the stunning scenery. Also the comfort of Robin cottage and the extras you left especially the cake was much appreciated. Bonus we had good weather as well. Always a bit uncertain when you visit Derbyshire.

  • "We booked half term week at Robin Cottage to spend some time with our son and his family, having stayed in the adjoining Swallow Cottage (1 Bed) last October."

It was, as expected perfect for all our needs. Even with four adults and a baby, we still did not feel cramped for space. The kitchen was well equipped and a high chair was provided on request. We can honestly say that there wasn't anything else that we needed to thoroughly enjoy our stay. Just one regret. We had intended to sample the optional breakfast available at the farmhouse B & B during our stay but never actually got to do it. Louise the owner was always around and very helpful if you had any questions. The weather was a little bit against us during our week in the cottage but it was always warm and comfortable. All in all we would highly recommend Robin Cottage.

  • "We felt immediately at home in this warm, well equipped, clean, cosy, well-located cottage."

It was exactly what was needed for four of us and a small dog, and in fact exceeded expectations. The proximity to Alton Towers was ideal. There was good food to be found locally, and plenty of beautiful walks and interesting sites close-by and further afield. To be recommended.

  • "A very cosy, characterful and well equipped cottage."

The site is high , so very windy, but extensive views, when the weather allows. It took a while to find the best nearby shopping, eateries and walks, but we will be better prepared for a return visit. An excellent place to take dogs.

Would definitely stay again. Only downside was no direct access to garden area from the cottage so had to put leads on the doggos whenever they needed to go out, and extremely dark in the enclosed area during the night even with a torch

  • "Lovely cottage, very well equipped indeed especially the kitchen."

Holiday rentals often require that you change your approach to cooking due to limited equipment, not so here. We only spoke to the owners briefly but Louise was very pleasant and approachable. We were also left a lovely and very generous festive hamper which we all tucked in to, along with a good amount of milk to get us going until our shopping order arrived. Very comfortable beds, effective heating and plenty of hot water with great water pressure. Very comfortable sofas and decent FreeSat television in the lounge and a very effective electric fire if the heating needs a boost. The only slight negative, and it really is only slight, is that the back garden isn't accessible from the house, but instead accessed via a side gate. We have 2 dogs, one of which is a 9 month old terrier puppy who is not to be trusted yet, so it was a bit of a pain putting him on a lead and going out with him every time we needed to let him out. I imagine the property is listed, so there's no way around this, and certainly wouldn't stop us from returning. There is a public right of way directly opposite the property so if you do have dogs you can very quickly be somewhere they can run freely, assuming the cows aren't out. Overall, this property was exactly what we wanted, quiet, remote and with wonderful views which allowed us to fully relax after Christmas and in to the new year.

  • "Robin Cottage is in a lovely setting with a bed and breakfast next door."

The owners are helpful without being intrusive. The cottage is well equipped with open views of countryside through large glazed windows both ground and first floor. Netflix was a nice bonus. I would definitely book again. My dog had a great time running in the garden at the rear.

  • "Robin Cottage is cute, cosy and very comfortable."

It’s the ideal location for exploring the Staffordshire countryside. I was delighted to find such a well equipped kitchen with a choice of three frying pans! There are lots of touches in the cottage which make the experience of staying that much better than other Sykes Cottages that I have booked recently, for example, a plentiful supply of toiletries, towels, toilet roll, cleaning materials in the kitchen, and biscuits & milk on arrival. Louise is warm and friendly, on hand if you need anything. We enjoyed shopping in Ashbourne, visiting the Peak wildlife park and walking in Ilam Park. Hetty’s tearoom at Froghall Wharf is well worth a visit with a walk along the Caldon canal. As artists, we spent time in the garden sketching the wonderful view and absorbing the sounds of the countryside. A gem of a place.

  • "It was just a lovely holiday."

The holiday cottage was great and we had a lovely time. We were a little bit nervous about the COVID-19 situation and whether that and the related measures in place would detract from our holiday experience - but it didn't, we found everyone to be friendly, helpful and supportive (both at Sykes Cottages, the owners of the holiday let, and the the local restaurants). Excellent holiday all round, and wish we were back there now!

  • "The holiday was wonderful."

Cottage completely up to expectations but following a request to change cottage with plenty of opportunity for owner to re-let I was very disappointed with your reaction. Following this during lockdown Sykes failed to keep contact with options, I had to find out for myself. At no time was a refund offered but, fortunately, I managed to adjust personnel arrangements and re-book (at a higher rate) I understand that you have now changed your policy but not in time for myself.

Thank you for taking the time to review Robin Cottage, it's lovely to hear you had an enjoyable stay. I'm sorry to hear you feel let down by Sykes we really appreciate your time to provide constructive feedback. If there is anything further you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact us. Many Thanks Property Owner

Moorland View Farm Cottages

These two cosy cottages are located in a courtyard in the grounds of the owner’s B&B in the small hamlet of Winkhill, set in an elevated position in five acres overlooking stunning countryside near the market towns of Leek and Ashbourne. The cottages are a lovely conversion of traditional Staffordshire stone buildings, blending original features and modern styling with exposed beams. Outside, both cottages have beautiful gardens to sit and take in the glorious views. There are many pubs and restaurants nearby and you can even arrange to have your breakfast next door if you fancy it (pending availability). There are stunning walks to be taken in Mill Dale and Dove Dale or you can explore the National Trust’s Hawksmoor, an ancient forest nature reserve. Within half an hour's drive, guests can enjoy a round of golf on the excellent course at Whiston. The area offers many ancient relics from its industrial past, namely the Caldon Canal built in 1776 and restored in 1974, which runs through the Churnet Valley. Visitors can also enjoy a ride on the Churnet Valley Steam Railway. Alton Towers is just a short drive away, as are the Staffordshire Potteries, the market towns of Ashbourne and Leek, Uttoxeter Racecourse and the majestic Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Lyme Park and Blackbrook Zoological Gardens. A great base for a memorable holiday at any time of the year
