  • "Lovely, comfortable, well equipped cottage with outstanding views across the valley."

    Really enjoyed our stay.

  • "Location for walking holiday excellent."

Views across the valley, northward, across rooftops lovely. Close to The Miners Standard for good meals and service. Other pub, The Old Bowling Green, just down the hill has limited opening to around weekends, but is a busy and well patronised by friendly locals. Ask about the pizza night there. Parking is just a few yards (up the slope towards The Miners Standard) on the track. This is great because you cannot hear any traffic!! Cottage is south side, top of village. As an old mining village on a steep slope, cut through with ginnels, be prepared for steep walking around the village. Main Street where 7 day a week community run shop and post office is located at bottom of village.. Limestone Way passes by at back of village on the ridge which leads to Matlock. On opposite hills is a demanding path to The Nine Ladies stone circle. If you need low gradients and easy walking, East Anglia would be my suggestion. For a delightful cottage, a friendly village and some demanding walking then Rock Cottage is for you. Be aware that church clock rings every quarter hour and on the hour, but calls of owls from the nearby woodland provides decent aural compensation at night. Overall, we'd happily return to Winster and Rock Cottage again!

The cottage itself was excellent, well equipped, comfortable and peaceful surroundings.

  • "Last minute booking for a few days away."

Lovely small cottage, well appointed with everything you need to be self catering. Great communication from the owners before we got there and lovely welcome package on arrival of milk, scones, flowers, tea & coffee! Good for adults or people with an older child. We traveled with a toddler so not the best match for us, took our own travel cot which only just fit in the single room but we couldn't shut the room door, we also took our highchair but ended up leaving it in the car and sat on the kitchen floor to feed as didn't want to risk the carpet in the dining room with a weaning toddler and the kitchen was too small to accommodate it. Off-road parking is a bonus but it is a short walk down hill to the cottage so be aware of that with getting luggage in/out. Avoid showering just before bed as the shower fan is steam activated and goes on for hours with no way if shutting it off! Bedding in main room is feather so be aware if you have allergies like my hubby, luckily the high quality pillow protectors made a big difference and he managed for a couple of nights. Bed is very soft and creaky. Rainy days are well catered for with an extensive library and cupboards full of CDs, puzzles, and games. Beautiful views across the village and very close to one of the village pubs for an evening meal and a few drinks. Overall a great base for exploring the Matlock area.

  • "This cottage is a real gem and we had a wonderful break."

Especially lovely that there is no road in front of the cottage, just a walkway and wonderful views. The terrace and summerhouse are a bonus. There is a freezer in the summerhouse if needed. The Miners pub serves really good food. Definitely book in advance if during holidays. The cottage owners were super friendly and helpful. Thank you. (Not for publication, but It might be worth saying in your listing that there is off road parking (but not designated) nearby on a track or in a small car park 3 mins walk away, so that it's not a surprise. We didn't realise this until we got the email from the cottage owners prior to arrival.)

Very well equipped. Wonderful views, and very friendly locals. Just a bit of a hill down to it, so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Otherwise perfect.

  • "Not sure if Sykes or owners but off road parking to me is private parking."

It is not parking on mud with other cars on the side of a potholed track with limited turning. Only knew this in email from the owner just before we stayed. There is also no mention that it is a steep walk down to the property to carry cases. The cottage itself was lovely and homely, although chilly in the kitchen even when radiator on full blast, shower could do with a bit more power as well. Very comfy bed and in the summer the outside area would be fantastic with great views. A more accurate description of parking and access needed, someone else might have found the access/ steepness limited their holiday and I probably wouldn't have booked if the car parking had been accurately described.

Hello Nicola. My apologies its taken so long to respond to your comments. I have noted them for sure and apologise for any inconvenience the parking situation caused. It was around the time of the storms and so unusually wet which resulted in the parking places being excessively chewed up. This will not be the case as the weather improves if course. I take your point also that mention needs to be given to the access leading to the cottage which at this time of year can be challenging. Both of these situations have now been mentioned in the initial information given to prospective people looking to book the cottage, and I thankyou for your valuable comments. I hope perhaps you can come back at another time of year where you will enjoy the position and cosiness of the cottage that much more. Best wishes to you. Denise Property Owner

The property

Rock Cottage is a traditional, detached property overlooking, the charming White Peak village of Winster.

With attractive, original features, including exposed beams and period fireplaces, the Cottage is an ideal venue for couples or a small family.

It is equipped with a travel cot, a changing mat and a high chair for young families. From the well-appointed kitchen, there is a single step down into the inviting sitting room.

Here a glowing, coal-effect, electric fire creates a cosy atmosphere.

Tucked away at the end of this room is a dining area where you will also find a large selection of books, local guides and games for evenings and any periods of inclement weather.

This is also a great place to spread out maps and make plans for the day ahead.

Upstairs, the main double bedroom and the second, single bedroom both have stunning views over the local church across the surrounding countryside. To the side of the cottage, is a surprisingly secluded patio area, with a glass-doored cabin, that contains all you require for alfresco-style dining within the peace and tranquillity of your surroundings. There are a number of shops, pubs and local attractions, all within walking distance, in the heart of Winster.

These include the Eighteenth Century Market House, which was the first property to be acquired by the National Trust in Derbyshire. For walkers, the Limestone Way runs alongside the Cottage and Stanton Moor, with the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, and Arbor Low, Derbyshire’s ‘Stonehenge’ are nearby; the Tissington and High Peak trails are ideal for cyclists and there are numerous venues for both bouldering and rock climbing. Head towards Matlock, where you can take in stunning views from the top of Pic Tor War Memorial; hop aboard a Peak Rail steam train or a vintage tram at the National Tram Museum at Crich or marvel at the sights from an alpine-style cable car while ascending to the Heights of Abraham, where there are natural caves and a museum with fossils.

Be sure to visit Bakewell, where you will find the historic Bakewell Bridge, the Old House Museum and of course, Bakewell Pudding! Situated just a short drive from Chatsworth House and both Haddon and Hassop halls and a score of pretty market towns and villages, nestling in a picturesque, rural landscape, Rock Cottage is an ideal base from which to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Peak District.

About the location

WINSTER

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
