  • "Good things first."

Lovely charming cottage in a lovely village. Comfy beds and arranged as doubles as requested. A great powerful shower but shame the lights didn’t work round the mirror. Nice to have a wood burning stove. However, the cottage was really dirty. The fridge hadn’t been cleaned out, you couldn’t get anything in the freezer compartment as it was all frozen up and milk 5 days out of date left in the fridge. Frying pan hadn’t been cleaned since last used and there was baking parchment left in oven with leftover food stuck to it. We had to give everything a good wash before using anything. The shower screen was black at the bottom and hanging off. On the sofa underneath the cushions it was full of dog hairs. I have pictures if the owners want any proof of any of the above. It’s a shame as all previous feedback has been good and that’s why we booked.

Hello Lisa, This should not have happened, I can only assume that the cleaners had nor cleaned the cottage, thoroughly, or even at all! I shall certainly be raising it with them. It is policy that the fridge is cleaned after every visit, likewise cooking utensils. We also leave a small welcome pack of milk, sugar and tea, which should be fresh. We will make sure that this does not happen again. What I would say in reply is that we do list our number in the welcome pack, we ask people to call if there are any problems, if you had done I would have had the cleaners around the same day to complete the job they had patently failed to do. The board games and hike trail information packs were very useful and pub round the corner and one about 5 minutes walk.. plenty of convient places on the doorstep. We loved the log fire and location was nice peaceful relaxing stay. We hope to come back again soon! Thankyou so much for a lovely relaxing break

  • "This is the first time I’ve left anything other than an excellent review for a 4+ tick property on Sykes."

While the property is in a fantastic location and is spacious and comfortable, it needs a thorough and detailed clean. I’d also suggest improving the lighting downstairs and in the bathroom (there are lights around the bathroom mirror but they weren’t working). There was also no protectors on the bedding in the twin room and the pillows smelt awful.

Thank you for your feedback, I was most upset to hear about the problems you experienced. The cottage is cleaned prior to each visit, all linen is changed and bed protectors are used. I will check with the cleaning company to find out why this was not done, I can only assume an oversight. The cottage has now had a further, thorough clean since you kindly reported the issue and all problems have been addressed Property Owner

The cottage was clean, cosy and comfortable. The village of Winster is beautiful, especially at this time of year, full of Christmas lights and cheer. We found the locals very friendly. The village shop is run by the community and has a very good selection of items. Pub is also good, we recommend the takeaways. We enjoyed our stay at Stanfree House.

  • "The front room smelt strongly of urine so we bought air freshners."

No teatowels or oven gloves so you couldn't get stuff out the oven until we bought some. No wood on arrival to use and no heating so it was cold. We didn't arrive until 8pm so nowhere local to get wood. The seats outside had been left out so were wet and unusable. The sofa was heavily stained so we had to cover it to sit on it.

Thank you for your feedback, I was most upset to hear about the smell on your arrival. We do allow guests' pets to stay in the cottage, but this is the first time in four years that anything like this has been reported. Please accept our apologies. The cottage is cleaned before the arrival of all guests, I can only surmise that the cleaner assumed all was in order before she left, only for it to prove more persistent. The cottage has now had a further, thorough clean since you kindly reported this issue and the problem has been addressed Sofa coverings are removed and cleaned immediately if they suffer a major stain, otherwise on a regular schedule, but this has proved difficult over the last few weeks as the cottage has been constantly occupied, We have arranged for the covers to be cleaned at the end of this week. Regarding heating, I'm sorry you found the cottage cold on your arrival, the heating settings had been changed by a previous guest, these have now been reset to the correct timings. Instructions for changing the heating settings are included in the handbook. Logs for the woodburner are not included in the price of the rental Property Owner

  • "Winster is a lovely village and plenty to do in the surrounding area."

Upstairs bedrooms and bathroom was clean and comfortable. But the lounge and kitchen area were in need of better cleaning. On Friday evening I had to vacum the mat in the lounge as it was covered in dog hair. Hoover had a very bad smell and needed a clean bag. Oven was not clean and a few utensils had left over food on them. As we looked for something under the sofa cushions found that they needed a good clean and had a lot of hair and dirt under them. Also found it quite hard to sleep because of traffic and people noise outside as the windows are not double glazed. Such a shame about these things as the cottage is lovely and has so much character and charm. We had a lovely holiday despite these few things and really enjoyed the Peak District.

Thank you for your review. Please accept my apology for the unsatisfactory state of the lounge and kitchen. We have come to expect our guests' reviews to commend the cleanliness of the property, to hear that the normal high standards were not maintained during your and the previous guest's stay is very disappointing. I hope this did not detract too much from the enjoyment of your stay. Your comments have been raised with the housekeeping team who assure me that this will not happen again. Property Owner

  • "Due to the cottage being located on the main street through Winster, we found the noise levels to be extremely disruptive!"

I do think it's location should be highlighted. Also the courtyard area is a suntrap but the chairs are extremely uncomfortable. I lost my phone down the side of the settee and the filth under the cushions does prove that the place hasn't had a proper thorough clean, which is most alarming, especially during current Covid times. On a positive note, the beds were comfortable and Winster was lovely.

Please accept my apology for the dirt under the cushions. A thorough clean is scheduled prior to the arrival of each guest, the fact that this particular task was not done has now been raised with the housekeeping team. Property Owner

Unfortunately we had a few days of rain, and within a few hours of the rain starting all internal walls were wet half way up which left quiet a smell for the duration of our stay, which is a shame as the cottage is in the ideal location.

Thank you for your feedback. With regards to the "wet walls" mentioned in this review, this is not rising damp but condensation and easily fixed. in humid conditions the water condenses on the cold, stone walls, of the front room only, this can be remedied in two ways, either by increasing the ventilation by opening the downstairs windows, doors and the door of the wood stove, or more quickly by turning on the room's radiator for a short period time. There is no condensation issue with the walls in the kitchen, bedrooms, or bathroom. The cottage walls are lime plaster applied directly onto stone, exactly as they were when they were built in the 18th century, the walls remain "cool" throughout the year, a real advantage in a hot Summer. Carpets have been recently cleaned, we have also taken the opportunity to add antique Turkish carpets to the rooms, also an iron and ironing board. Property Owner

  • "We was really disappointed with the cottage to the point we left a day early."

The cottage was very cold and had no homey feel to it what so ever.... the biggest let down was the lack of Christmas decoration....considering we had young children a little more effort would have been nice considering the price we paid to stay. We went to the local shop and the most we could get was tinsel hence that was left in the cottage on our departure. It was a very big let down and will not be booking through you again neither will we recommend you for Christmas breaks.

Dear Mrs Thomas I am sorry that you were unhappy with your stay at Stanfree House. Especially as the major issue, that the cottage was cold, could have been easily addressed. The cottage is always very warm and homely, so i'm sorry that you did not find it this way. There are full instructions on using the heating in the welcome book, or you could have called us or Sykes. The heating system has been checked and is in fully working order. We decorate the cottage to reflect its size and character with a wreath on the door, a table decoration and a small Xmas tree, which I did confirm in my email to you. Property Owner

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
