  • "What an unforgettable stay!"

I visited this beautiful cottage on my own to have a recovery week to heal from burnout that I succumbed to from working too much. Relaxing in the hut tub, reading books by the log burner and being in such a peaceful setting for a week has given me the energy I need to continue with my professional career. Thank you so much for helping me get back on my feet! Ash

Well equipped and beautifully decorated. The fridge door could do with being opened the other side! Water pressure poor as others have said but we managed. Would like to have seen some hot tub maintenance records available and known it was serviced daily but we didn’t, doesn’t mean it wasn’t of course. Lovely touch to have chocs and prosecco on arrival. Spoke to no one but a man doing some maintenance outside. Overall it was just what we needed.

My granddraughter thorough enjoyed the hot tub and also had the opporunity to ride a horse. The property was top class with all the necessary modern things. It was very much like home to home. the hot system only allows for one shower to used at any one time. Also if there use of water anywhere in the property the water to the shower reduces considerably. There needs to an outside lights at the front door.

A road closure nearby was a bit of a problem, but we can also recommend the Dog & Partridge for dinner. Had a problem using the main TV - turned out the remotes had been swapped - so probably need to be marked. I also left some notes for the owner - just a few small things that need attention, and some suggestions for additions.

Close to Uttoxeter. Beds comfortable. Cottage clean and well furnished. Good quality china and utensils. Baking pans and trays could do with updating. Shower floor could do with mats as slippery. Good quality bedding and towels. Lovely welcome of wine and chocolate. Owner quick to sort out a problem that happened with water supply. One bedroom has shutters and no blinds so lots of light coming in. Would be good to have a bigger size fridge and freezer and a washing machine would be helpful. Enjoyed our time there. .

But it would have been so much better if we had been informed that the electric car charger only takes one or two £ coins. Nowadays most people don’t carry lots of coins with them. In general it would help if cottages with EV chargers would have such information included in the description, as well as the price per kw. We really enjoyed our week stay at “Little Gem” cottage.

It has been renovated and furnished to a high standard (hard to believe it was once a tractor shed) yet is cosy and comfortable and has retained it's charm. Alison, the owner, is a lovely lady who made us feel very welcome. When we needed assistance, she was there instantly to offer help. We found it very useful having an EV charger at the property - however, remember to take lots of £1 or £2 coins for the meter. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend Little Gem.

The cottage was spotless, well equipped with high quality fixtures and fitting throughout and it was clear from the moment we stepped into the cottage that a lot of love and effort has gone into making the cottage perfect and the fresh flowers, chocolates and prosecco being the perfect welcome. The location of the cottage was great, set in beautiful scenic surroundings but a short drive to the town which has lots of lovely places to eat and shops to explore. The cottage was very modern with everything provided that we needed, including dish cloths, tea towels, toilet rolls and extra towels for the hot tub. We took a lot of items with us that we didnt need, as the information received prior to arrival was still following covid guidelines. We enjoyed using the hot tub after our daily trips out. There were 2 large double bedrooms both with ensuites. The host left flowers, prosecco and chocolates on our arrival, which was a nice touch, and spoke to us on leaving to check everything had been ok. There were a couple of negative points which took a star off the rating for us. Firstly, the beds weren’t very comfy, so none of us slept very well whilst there. Secondly, there needs to be black out blinds in the front bedroom, the wooden shutters are beautiful, however they do still let a lot of light in whenever a car comes down the road or the security light comes on at the property opposite, which happened a couple of times in the night. This may also help with the noise from dogs barking - a 6:30am wake up was not ideal!

! We booked it for the week and I can honestly say I wish I had booked it for longer. The hot tub was amazing and we definitely made the most of it, was even better at night with all of the lights on! Alison and Andy were so lovely, if you needed anything they were straight onto it, they were kind enough to let me use there washing machine all i had to do was ask. They are such kind and prideful people and want their customers so be happy with the place just as much as they are. The little gem has everything you need for a holiday, including an iron, ironing board, hoover and mop, she was so kind and gifted us a bottle of prosecco and chocolates. I have had such an amazing time there and I would highly recommend staying there, there's also so much to do around the area and didn't take us any longer than 30 mins to drive to the places! Also thankyou to Alison for letting me ride coco, it was amazing and has bought back with many memories for me. I will definitely be booking again!

  • "Overall the property was in good order and suitable for a families stay, however, there are a number of issues that if rectified, would make the property more than adequate."

    1. The on-suite bathroom in the Pink Bedroom is fitted with an Electric Radiator/Towel rail; this was “Dangerously Hot” and could not be switched off, we had to make sure it remained covered so as not to burn ourselves. 2. Internet connection was poor: The provided internet connection was provided using an old 4G (mobile telephone network) Wi-Fi router rather than broadband or newer 5G Wi-Fi router; this made the Internet connection incredibly unstable, slow and sometimes unavailable. Notwithstanding that, the router had only been configured to use the 2.4 Gigahertz Wi-Fi band only and not the 5 Gigahertz Wi-Fi band again affecting overall performance. 3. The Televisions (Living Room/Pink Bedroom) provided were not connected to a Standard TV Aerial and as such could not receive “Live Television”, i.e. traditional ITV, BBC etc including all the Free-view channels. Although the hosts had provided access to some internet TV subscriptions services, this was limited and with the internet issues described above did not make for a great viewer experience with poor picture quality and continuous picture drop-outs. 4. Although the property is within a farm environment, the continual barking of a number of dogs especially in the early evening was quite annoying and tedious. Every-time a horse, walker or another dog passed the farm on the road the dogs started barking again. Despite these small irritations, we thoroughly enjoyed our time away at Little Gem, and the standard of the property was on the better side of some available. The Furnishing were of a high quality and comfortable, beds were also very comfortable and spacious. The Hot tub and its location is a great asset and was really relaxing.

  • "Beautifully appointed ‘Little Gem’ of a property."

Great layout and with lovely high quality fixtures and features. Hot tub is great and outside furniture stylish and comfortable. The TV’s are FireTV’s which take a little getting your head around, and can be a bit hit and miss when the internet is intermittent. Parking plentiful and has added feature of electric charging point for those who require it. Sainsbury’s delivery available if you’re travelling from a distance. Easy access to Alton Towers, about 30 minutes away, and easy access to the Derbyshire Dales as well. Information which would be useful for future guests would be practical things such as how to dispose of refuse, contact telephone number for housekeeper, how to work the oven, hot tub, tv’s etc. in the information folder. I hadn’t realised until we arrived that there was no washing machine or dryer, which are usually standard. Recognising that Little Gem is small, a facility to wash and dry clothes somewhere on site would be beneficial, particularly as we had a 2 year old with us. We had an issue with an odour from the septic tank, however once reported this was dealt with swiftly and successfully (drain blocked with wipes - not ours!). We would definitely stay here again, but especially so if a washing machine was available. Thank you for a lovely holiday.

  • "We had a wonderful stay at Little gem and the owners were very helpful, when filling out this questionnaire we have marked down listing by one mark as we took this to be advertised at my time of booking and some items were not listed like the log burner etc."

Comfort was marked down by one mark on the account that we found the two sofas to be hard to rise up once seated. Overall we found the accommodation to be first class and would recommend to stay here. We didn't do much cooking in the cottage, but the appliances took a small time to figure out on how to work them, we did check the welcome folder but no instruction/operating manuals where there to help out, but we did figure it out, maybe leaving some sort of operating instruction would help other users of the property. We found an odour in one of the toilets which we told the owner and this will be looked into, we also passed this on to the handyman upon our departure, so this should be looked into for the next user coming into the property. We firmly believe if the owner was made aware by the previous users this would have been sorted. Under no circumstances did this deter or spoil our stay there, We used the hot tub on a few occasions, fortunate we have used hot tubs before and had a rough idea on how they worked, we feel some sort of instructions for the operation of the hot tub would help other users. we had difficulty taking off and on putting on the foil cover over the lid of the hot tub this need some more clearance from the lounge window. We were both down visiting family and choose Little gem for its location, features and the cleanliness from the pictures and the lovely welcome from the dogs was an added feature, we both agree this was the perfect choice for us. Although we were down visiting family we did get out and about, Uttoxeter is 3.5 miles from Little gem with the supermarkets easily accessible and your within easy driving distance of many tourist attractions and we would recommend Dovedale for walking, there are toilets and a snack bar at the car park, Carsington water visitor centre, Trentham gardens there are shops and a garden centre here too, there is loads to do around the area and the scenery is beautiful. We both would choose Little gem again to stay in and many thanks to the owners on delivering a charming cottage for us to stay in.

Marchington is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and offers some beautiful walks as it runs adjacent to the River Dove. The village has a couple of friendly pubs with The Dog and Partridge serving good food, The Barn Indian Restaurant, a small shop and two churches. The village is situated five miles from the bustling Staffordshire town of Uttoxeter with its popular racecourse, golf club, and cinema. NT Sudbury Hall and its Museum of Childhood are very close by, offering a fascinating insight into days gone by. The market town of Ashbourne is within driving distance, with its eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys and quaint coaching inns. Ashbourne is something of a haven for antique hunters, boasting superb shops, as well as offering a variety of good pubs and restaurants. The Dove and Manifold Valleys are also nearby, and with both Tittesworth and Carsington Reservoirs and the thrills of Alton Towers an easy drive, this is a beautiful and relaxing location to enjoy all year round.
