Considered one of Scotland's undiscovered gems, Gullane (from Scottish Gaelic 'Gualainn', meaning 'ridge') is a coastal town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian on the East coast of Scotland. Hidden away on a scenic drive from the historic capital of Edinburgh, Gullane is part of the John Muir Way, a long-distance footpath along the coast between Musselburgh and Dunglass. Within Gullane, you will be delighted to find a reasonable selection of shops and amenities, including a plethora of pubs and restaurants, as well as a fish and chip shop for those nights where you do not feel like cooking. Attractions within the town includes Gullane Golf Club that is home to three courses and to the south of the town is Luffness New Golf Club. One of the highlights of the town is Gullane Bents, which is one of the best beaches in East Lothian. From here, you can walk all the way round to Black Rocks where you can catch a glimpse of the ruins of Patrick's Chapel. The ruins of the Old Church of St. Andrew built in the 12th Century can still be seen from the western entrance to the town, while further afield, just past North Berwick, you can visit the impressive Tantallon Castle, or visit Yellowcraig Beach. More history of the surrounding area is located half a mile from Gullane, where the ruins of the superb Saltcoats Castle lie and is gradually being reclaimed by nature. All-in-all, Gullane promises to be a tranquil getaway for the whole family.
