“This was our first holiday since lockdown and we were anxious up to the day before, as to whether or not the ongoing restrictions would still allow us to go.”

Gladly, we were able to do so and we enjoyed our stay very much. It was lovely and peaceful, the weather was nice enough for us to sit in the garden, the cottage was spotlessly clean and the welcome gift of jams, biscuits and fresh eggs were much appreciated. We like the area and hope to go again next year.

The property

Arbroath 6.5 miles, Friockheim 2.5 miles.

A delightful detached first floor garage conversion alongside the owner’s property in the tranquil village of Leysmill, with the nearest shops being in the nearby village of Friockheim and just six miles from Arbroath in beautiful Angus.

Offering a tranquil getaway, this lovely cottage is ideal for a couple who wish to explore Angus, its beautiful glens, towns, villages and beaches.

Accessed via a set of external steps, The Piggery Bellevue has been tastefully equipped and beautifully decorated to provide very comfortable accommodation.

You enter the main open plan living accommodation with a kitchen, a fold-away dining table, a large corner sofa and a cosy woodburning stove.

Next door is a double bedroom with a large walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite shower room, and there are wonderful countryside views from all rooms.

Outside is a private patio area where you can relax with a drink or wander through the owner’s garden to the woods beyond.

The nearby village of Friockheim has a public house, a small supermarket and a chemist.

A short drive will bring you to the port of Arbroath with its historic Abbey and working harbour.

Arbroath is known for its long sandy beaches, as well as the Arbroath Smokie; haddock which is traditionally salted overnight, dried, and then smoked over a hardwood fire.

Make sure that you sample some whilst you explore the town.

The superb beach at Lunan Bay is only 7 miles away and the golf links at Carnoustie only 12 miles.

The superb Angus Glens are less than an hour’s drive where you will find excellent walking for all levels.

A superb holiday cottage and an ideal retreat whatever the season.

ARBROATH

Carnoustie 8 miles; Dundee 16 miles; St Andrews 30 miles.

An ancient port, Arbroath’s status as a town can be dated from 1178, when Arbroath Abbey was founded. The Abbey was subsequently consecrated in 1197 and there is a dedication to Saint Thomas Becket in the Abbey. The famous Declaration of Arbroath, the desire for Scottish self-determination, was signed in the Abbey in 1320. Arbroath’s influence grew over the subsequent centuries and particularly during the Industrial Revolution through the flax and jute industries, as well as fishing with the town boasting one of the largest fishing ports in Scotland by the 20th century. It is known for its long sandy beaches, as well as the Arbroath Smokie, with its haddock, traditionally salted overnight, dried, and then smoked over a hardwood fire. There are several traditional smokehouses around the harbour, with many well worth a visit, as well as excellent restaurants for fine dining. With lots of coastal walking and cycling, as well as golf courses and Carnoustie only 8 miles along the coast, there are plenty of attractions and activities in an around this lovely coastal town.
