  • "We had a lovely few days at Upper Farm Barn."

Didn’t get to meet the owner as she was away but she still kept in touch with us during our stay. Cottage is small but comfortable and well equipped. Loved the outdoor patio in the sunshine. The area is lovely, especially Ludlow and Shrewsbury. Would recommend.

  • "A fabulous cottage with excellent facilities in a good location for accessing the major sites/attractions of this beautiful area (but see below)."

However:- 1) the landline telephone number for the owner is shown on the email as the first point of contact to arrange key handover and for other communication that may be necessary during the stay. Having tried this number several times with no success I eventually contacted the owner on her mobile. The owner told me that she has informed Sykes on several occasions that the landline is non-existent and has been for over a year - but the number still appears on the Sykes emails! 2) The "welcome hamper" is described on the email communication and on the webpage as containing "local milk, butter, eggs and bread" so I didn't buy any of these on my food shopping at the nearby supermarket on my way to the cottage. Sadly, there was no bread and no butter - substituted by carrot cake and biscuits. Difficult to make a sandwich or toast out of those! So another trip to the supermarket had to be made after unpacking! (The eggs were delicious, though!) 3) The instructions to get to the cottage advise that, from the A489 you should turn onto B4370 and continue for 1.8 miles; then turn right signed to Woolston and continue for 1.6 miles into the hamlet of Woolston. Turn right just before yellow grit bin and post box and continue for 50 yards - the cottage is seen set back on the right with parking in front. I would just like to say for future prospective visitors that this route involves driving over a very rough, winding, narrow single track lane with very few passing places and very restricted visibility due to high hedges (a delight of our countryside but not so good from behind the wheel of a car!). On 3 occasions on the journey to the cottage on the day of arrival I had to reverse into farm track openings to give way to farm traffic. This resulted in a very scratched and damaged exhaust as the ground was so rough, stony and uneven. The owner subsequently advised that the better route was to come through Wistanstow - which is a slightly longer route but a much better surfaced road and although a single lane (this is a rural area, after all!) it had many more passing places with no farm traffic. Other than that - a delightful stay. Thank you.

Ellie is extremely friendly and on hand with any queries. We appreciated the massive fresh eggs! The garden (although not suitable for those with restricted mobility) is very pleasant with a large sun-terrace fully equipped with BBQ etc. and there is easy parking outside. Would certainly recommend this property especially to keen walkers.

  • "Ellie was extremely helpful, and responded immediately to any issues we raised with her."

The welcome pack was much appreciated. The barn is in a lovely peaceful location with walks from the door. It is perfect for accessing many areas of Shropshire - Stokesey Castle is well worth a visit. Note that access to the property is via single track roads with some passing spaces, although these seemed to be quiet. The kitchen is well equipped, but a family of four may struggle with the amount of crockery available - 5 dinner plates, 5 side plates, 5 bowls. It took us a few days to manage the temperature of the cottage, but finally worked a combination of under floor heating and wood burner. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return in the future.

A few things about the cottage: It was welcoming and every where was clean and tidy, however, the sofa nearest the window desperately needs replacing, very uncomfortable, there are some screws missing on the door coat hooks so you can't hang anything up there, there were no locks on the bathroom doors and disabled people beware the steps to the cottage are steep.

There was a lot more space than we were expecting, and due to the underfloor heating it is very warm. Would love to go back in Summer to fully enjoy the balcony garden. With zero light pollution the sky at night was truly spectacular. Ellie is a great host, and went out of her way to help us. The countryside is beautiful, with plenty of nice walks close at hand. • "We thought Upper Barn Farm was one of the nicest cottages we’ve ever stayed in."

If we haven’t given it 5 stars that’s because there was no hamper of local food on arrival - although there was bread milk and eggs and an Aldi carrot cake! Also there were some small things which could have improved our stay and we communicated these to the owner. Otherwise the property was actually bigger than it appeared on the website and the upper patio was a lovely private area for sun-bathing. The decent site fridge freezer was a real bonus. We’ve re-booked for next year.

About the location

WISTANSTOW

Craven Arms 2.2 miles; Church Stretton 6.6 miles; Ludlow 11.8 miles.

Wistanstow is a small picturesque village in Shropshire situated approximately 2 miles north of Craven Arms and 6.5 miles south of Church Stretton. The village is named from the Anglo-Saxon saint Wigstan who was the grandson of the king of Mercia. The main lane running through the village is a Roman road, which ran between the Roman settlements and forts at Leintwardine and Wroxeter. This beautiful village is home to a community village shop and a local pub serving real ales from the local Wood Brewery which is situated just behind it. Wistanstow village is located on the edge of the Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which offers plenty of walking opportunities. Visit the nearby small market town of Craven Arms, known as The Gateway to the Marches located between the beautiful medieval town of Ludlow and delightful Church Stretton.
This town is the main centre for Shropshire’s hill country and home to a variety of tea rooms, pubs and specialist shops. Carding Mill National Trust Centre has plenty of activities for children with shrot trails and longer walks and in the summer there is open water swimming in the reservoir. Other local attractions include walks on the Long Mynd, Shropshire Way and Jack Mitton paths, the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm and Stokesay Castle. Wenlock Edge and Corvedale Valley offer fine walks and the lovely Stokesay Castle, one of England's finest fortified manors, or the very popular Shropshire Hill Discovery Centre are well worth a visit. The surrounding area has some charming and historic houses, including a round house, thought to be a recognisable rest house for pilgrims travelling between Wigmore and Shrewsbury Abbeys and the fascinating 'Museum of Lost Content'. Winstantow is an excellent location for exploring this region of Shropshire.
