About the location

Bridgend 5 miles; Cardiff 19 miles.

Southerndown is a small village on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, best known for its wonderful beach, best known as Dunraven Bay, or Red Wolf Bay if you are a Dr. Who fan! The large west-facing beach is suitable for families, summer swimming, fossil hunting and even surfing and is Lifeguard patrolled. There is a small beach shop selling ice cream, drinks, beach toys and hot food and drinks. On the headland are the ruins of Dunraven Castle and also gardens open to the public, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the stunning coastline and across the bay to North Devon. A popular pub not far from the beach offers great views and a chance to relax with a drink and enjoy a meal, as does an excellent Italian restaurant. Nearby Ogmore-by-Sea offers a shop/Post Office, plus there are more good pubs and restaurants in the neighbouring villages. The pretty village of Llantwit Major offers more shops, pubs and restaurants together with historic buildings, or a short drive away is Cowbridge, with its designer boutiques, independent shops and historic Physic Garden. A short trip to Bridgend, will take you to town centre shopping and the popular outlet village. Nearby mountain trails provide the thrills for any cycling enthusiasts, while an easy train or car journey will take you to Cardiff or Swansea for shopping, theatres, concerts, sporting events and much more.
