  • "We had a lovely stay and loved the cottage."

As mentioned in previous reviews there’s building work going on opposite from 7.15am until approx 4pm as there are 15 new houses being built. We were out and about early so not an issue for us, but might be if you wanted to sit in the garden during the day. The bathroom is lovely but you do have to step into the bath to use the shower, not easy if you have mobility issues. The cottage is well equipped, warm, clean, and welcoming the only thing missing was toilet paper

Thank you for your feedback - delighted to hear you had a wonderful stay. Aberporth really is an unspoilt part of Cardigan Bay and there is plenty to explore nearby. We look forward to welcoming you back to your new happy place! Property Owner

  • "We were very tentative before travelling owing to some negative reviews."

The staff at Sykes cottages assured us the problems of cleanliness previously highlighted had been addressed this proved to be the case. The cottage although has no parking has a lovely enclosed garden is 5 minutes walk from a great pub,5 minutes from a shop which sells most things and is open 7 days a week and 4 minutes from a splendid beach. I cannot comment on the chippy (5 minutes away) as we didn't use it but it was very popular. One thing to take into account for the next 12 months is the building site work taking place directly opposite the cottage so no lie ins or quietly reading in the garden!

Thank you for your feedback - delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. We are working on securing parking at the property in 2024 -watch this (parking) space! There is building work taking place in the field opposite the cottage currently which has been screened off by the building contractors. Unfortunately this does happen across the country - however we have always found them to be considerate and polite. The chippy is definitely worth going to if you get the chance. Aberporth is a busy and popular village at all times of the year so there is always plenty to see and do. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

  • "When we arrived the cottage was filthy, dog hair everywhere and used bedlinen and towels."

We asked for help and messages showed they had been read but we got no response. It was really upsetting, especially for our children. We had to clean the bathroom and strip the beds ourselves and organise to borrow bedlinen. This isn't what we should be doing on our holiday! We weren't able to enjoy the property as described for the first 2 days, but are still waiting for any compensation. The outside bins are over-flowing, the kitchen oven, microwave and cupboards have not been cleaned at all, cushion covers all need a wash, the bath plug doesn't work and basics such as tea, salt, toilet paper weren't provided. I have never experienced anything similar in many years of visiting West Wales. I have photos evidencing all of this. I truly can't understand not apologising or providing compensation. They haven't even bothered to return the bedlinen we borrowed yet and we are expected to keep using our time to chase. We have clearly not received the service we paid for and will be pursuing the matter if required. Everyone should receive a clean, comfortable welcome to start their holiday and if problems occur they should be communicated and addressed swiftly.

Thank you for your feedback - we are sorry to learn of this as we understand the changeover was not completed and the housekeeping team were unresponsive. We confirm that we have changed our cleaning provider and housekeeping team (Oct 2023) - all linen and towels have been replaced with new. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future for an altogether better experience. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is very tastefully decorated and great location."

We have felt overall comfortable. There are a few drinking glasses and cutlery missing when there are five of us. Unfortunately, there was no place to put clothes in the master bedroom, so we had to live out of an opened suitcase for a week. The dressers in the other two bedrooms are too small to store clothes in. There are no options for hanging jackets on the first floor. For a resort with such changeable weather, this is very impractical. There were five of us there and we always had to throw our jackets over the baby chair. In the bathroom no possibility to hang towels for 5 people. A few hooks next to the door or opposite the washing machine would solve the problem. The oven and the trays in it were unfortunately covered in dirt. There was also dog hair in it.

Thank you for your feedback and pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay. We will add more drinking glasses and cutlery at the cottage as it seems that breakages etc were not reported. Thank you for letting us know. We have changed our cleaning provider and housekeeping team (Oct 2023) and the property has undergone a deep clean. All linen and towels replaced with new. We take your points on board and see how we can incorporate more storage at the cottage - you can get 4 seasons of weather in one day, so this is a good idea. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

The cottage was very clean and good instructions left for all appliances etc. We had a really comfortable stay would highly recommend this cottage. My only thing would be that if you have very small dogs or a dog that likes to escape then the garden isn’t totally secure as there are holes and gaps in the fence. I just made sure when my dogs were outside I was always out with them to avoid them escaping!!

Thank you for your feedback - pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay! We will look into how we can make the garden more secure to stop any little ones escaping. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

examples 1) dirty and damp towels folded on beds 2) dirty kitchen floor with red wine spills 3) black grit and hairs in bunk bed sheets 4) dishwasher electrocuted both my son and myself - electricians came promptly and found the socket fill of water from leaking washing machine! 5) freezer compartment full of ice so door would not close and water constantly leaked onto floor 6) carbon monoxide alarm went off but we couldn't find source of terrible ear splitting noise for hours but cleaning man came to sort our after 2 hours and removed it so we no longer had the safety of an alarm. Otherwise the garden is lovely and if it was cleaned and well maintained I would highly recommend this cottage in a perfect location!

  • "Fern Cottage in Aberporth is lovely, offers nearly everything you need for a great holiday."

The house is nicely decorated, and included all the facilities most people would need to make an enjoyable stay. The safe enclosed garden is a superb extra. The fact that no where in the village is that far to walk is also a real bonus. We did have some problems with the shower head (needs a new fitting to make it stay upright) but we were able to still use it during our stay. It might also be worth the listing stressing to anyone booking the cottage that the short walk up and down the hill to the beach/ local pub/car parking area might cause some people with mobility problems or families with small children an issue. We were okay with this but with no pavements and a reasonably steep hill to walk up we would expect anyone arriving without knowing this might be surprised and it could ruin their stay (although they ought to be aware before booking they are holidaying in scenic Wales) It's a shame that there are still regulations around the previous visitors book as we have been on UK cottage holidays for over 30 years and always find these a first stop in arrival as they are a very useful addition to help quick navigation to best places to visit/eat/shop in the area we are staying. Our stay was so enjoyable it left us knowing we will be booking to stay in that area again in the future.

A well equipped cottage. The cottage wasnt clean there was big stains on the rugs and furniture, black iron mould round taps in bathroom, the cabinets hadnt been wiped out there was toothpaste on the shelves , dirty toilet, the toilet kept blocking up and there was a plunger at the side so this must have been a previous problem which hasnt been sorted out, the microwave wasnt clean, there was sticky food mark's on the table , there was a space in the work tops which should have been sealed i, in the gap was crumbs and cobwebs, sealant missing round the sink in kitchen and food particles round the taps. The bedding was clean but there were things under the bed that if it had bern hoovered would have been picked up. Dog poo in the garden.

  • "Unfortunately when we arrived the property was not clean at all."

There was dog poo in the garden and dog hair all over the furniture. The property also smelled like dog which is not very nice if you don't have any dogs. Unfortunately we did not get any compensation for any of this and also the offer to have the cleaners come by again a day later was not really helpful since we have small children and it is impossible to keep them contained for so long, so we had to clean everything ourselves. Apart from the unpleasant start we had a nice time. Once properly cleaned the property is a nice place and so is the surrounding area. The bathroom could use some maintenance, for example the shower is broken and does not have any water pressure, so if you want to take a shower you are forced to stand against the wall. Also the coffee machine was broken unfortunately.

  • "The cottage was not clean when we arrived."

The problems were as follows: The cleanliness problems are as follows: - Black Dog Hair on Floor - Black Dog Hair in Bath - Black Dog Hair on Childs High Chair. - Floor Generally Filthy (Daughters Clothing on the Knees and legs went from White to Brown in 2 hours) - Dust on Lampshades collected with hair. - Dirty Bowl left under Sofa. - 5 Dog Poos left in the Garden (we checked when we arrived) - Crockery requires a clean before every use. More general problems include: - The shower Head does not retain its position. This is an easy fix. - The shower Shelf is Broken. This is an easy fix. - The drawer in the Kitchen (R of the Dishwasher) is broken. This is an easy fix. - There is Black Mould/Damp in the Master Bedroom which is where the cot is. This is noxious and needs to be dealt with and not hidden behind furniture. We told the owner and they had the cleaning company contact us. The cleaning company made 1 slot available on Monday which was not possible as they demanded we not be present in the cottage at the time and our 1-year-old knaps between 0930 and 11. They offered 1000. I was not prepared to spoil her day so I did a full clean myself on Sunday morning.

We are sorry that the guests at Fern Cottage had not experienced the high standards we usually achieve. We are grateful for an opportunity to respond. We do use a very reputable cleaning company and we are sorry standards were not up to their usual high level. We have taken this up with them and we know that there was a bereavement they were dealing with which has affected things. We know the cleaning issue will not happen again. The cleaning company did offer 2 further slots to come back to the cottage not just one which were both rejected. We asked for photos which were not forthcoming from the guests (even though they said they would be provided). . We always ask guests to leave the garden clear but on this occasion it appears was not done, but we have emphasised there must be a careful check each time. The cottage has been fully repainted this week up upstairs by a professional firm of painters and the slight mould dealt with The other minor fixings are being dealt with. Its not always possible to maintain a perfect house but we try. We are sorry that the standards were not as expected. This is very unusual for us to get these comments. But we will endeavour to rectify the issues as soon as possible and thank you for the opportunity to respond. Kind regards Property Owner

The cottage has lots of character is very homely so you can settle right in from the moment you get there. The parking situation was a bit awkward, there's a car park just down the road not far at all but trying to unload two small children and our daily baggage was not easy, we got beeped at a couple of times. The washing machine was a massive plus, we couldn't of managed without it after all those days at the beach. If you visit then Penbryn is a must, the beach there is just beautiful and secluded, Mwnt is also a nice little addition. Boat trip at New Quay and the Cardigan farm park were a must too as we spotted lots of Dolphins and seals. Rockpools at Newport are great fun for kids, make sure you go at low tide and theres a cafe on the golf course above so you can top your energy up.

A couple of slight negative things which I thought of:- The garden was said to be secure. There were large gaps between the wood fence strips. This was filled in by a piece of wire. Unfortunately my one dog is small and could easily get out (which he did the first day/ not far though). I would suggest you chicken wire the fence to make it fully safe. There was also quite a lot of dog mess - mostly hidden under the tree and round edges/ obviously someone had had a dog there with an upset tummy :( (we picked it all up) the main grass was fine. The only other negative was the white owl kitchen door knobs kept falling off...... Otherwise THE PLACE WAS SUPERB - WE DIDNT WANT TO LEAVE.

The photos are a good representation of the cottage, it is lovely, comfortable and homely. We went as a family of four, two children and two dogs. We felt the cottage was good for us but I'd suggest it'd be a squeeze for 4 adults with two children, just in terms of lounge space. The cottage is presented really well with lots of lovely details and the kitchen is well equipped, if anything it only lacks any freezer space and a dvd player but you don't really need it. Wifi worked well. The local village shop supplies a lot of things, there are several cafe's close by and the beaches are fabulous. The small garden caught the late sun well and we had our first alfresco dinner! When arriving you can park up and unpack but you then need to find a place to park. We were able to leave our car behind the village hall just up the hill from the cottage.

About the location

ABERPORTH

Tresaith 1 mile; Penbryn 3 miles; Llangrannog 5.5 miles; Cardigan 7 miles; Poppit Sands 8.5 miles; New Quay 15 miles.

Aberporth is a small town that sits on the southern edge of Cardigan Bay in Ceredigion, renowned for it's fabulous beaches that attract visitors, all year round. There are two beaches that sit between the rocky headlands of Trecregyn and Fathgarreg, separated by a smaller rocky outcrop. Uniquely, at low tide they interlink, but at high tide, they create individual beaches and create great rock pools for the children to play in and explore. Small boats, canoes, and kayaks can easily be launched from the north beach, while the south beach lends itself beautifully for a spot of sunbathing. Close to the beaches, there is a small seaside café, fish and chip shop, and a friendly pub serving good food and drinks. In the village itself, there is a range of shops and takeaway stores. Nestled directly on the famous Wales Coast Path, between the towns of Cardigan in the south, and Llangrannog and New Quay to the north, it is a great base for exploring this glorious stretch of coastline. Venture to Cardigan and discover the town’s many shops, tea rooms, restaurants, pubs, and bustling markets. Visit the nearby themed farm park, spot dolphins from the coastal path, or take a boat trip for the chance to see them up close! Aberporth is a great base for exploring this wonderful part of West Wales, with something to do for all the family.
