  • "Had a wonderful week in Dill Cottage with my two children, dad, and dog."

The house is very well equipped. Previous reviewers have commented that the King size bed and living room furniture are uncomfortable. Both have been replaced. The house is quite clean but needs a good clean under the beds and sofas etc, a few dust webs. The heating and hot water failed but within 1.5 hours Sykes had sorted someone to visit us and fixed the issue. Although there is parking for up to 3 cars you have to reverse to the house up a narrow shared driveway. I'd definitely return again but sadly this house is up for sale.

To our guests of 2023 We have owned Dill Cottage for the last 18 years and have been privileged to share this beautiful part of W Wales with families and their dogs from many different parts of the UK and abroad. This year due to personal reasons connected to loss and illness of close family members, we haven't been as present as we would like, and have felt confident in entrusting Coast & Country Holidays and our lovely housekeeper with the management and upkeep of the property on our behalf. Naturally there can be problems with any property much as we prefer there weren't, and whenever these are reported back to our amazing holiday company they are acted on speedily and we are always kept informed. We rely on constructive feedback from our guests to improve our service where possible, and for 17 of these 18 years have had little cause for justified complaint, a fact of which we are extremely proud. 2023 has been the exception and we thank those guests who have made contact if and when there have been issues. We also appreciate those of you who have alerted us to problems with furniture or maintenance requirements; we actively encourage communication in order to address any concerns as promptly as possible. So that you are aware, our choices are not only personal to us but support the community and local businesses in the area and the wider localities, celebrating all that is Welsh. Whether that be in our unique choice of welcome hamper from sustainable environmentally friendly small producers, or from businesses who support employees with physical or mental health challenges, diversity is welcomed by us and those who look after our property in our absence. We therefore respectively ask the thoughtless few to bear in mind how deeply upsetting careless comments can be to those who don't deserve them. Thank you for reading, and we look forward to welcoming more guests to a refurbished Dill Cottage in 2024. Warmest wishes, Simon & Colette, and our four pawed boys, Digby & Quinn. Property Owner

  • "A lovely, very dog friendly cottage."

Dotty, the Westie loved the dog toy box and the safe, fully enclosed garden. The house was chosen as it was particularly well suited for my brother in law, who has severe mobility problems. From the gentle, paved slope to access the property to having a downstairs en-suite bedroom and having everything downstairs on one level was ideal for him. The lovely welcome hamper with toiletries, wine, fudge, dog treats and coffee was an unexpected, lovely surprise. The cottage is in a lovely quiet spot, with hardly any passing traffic and having no street lamps makes for wonderful viewing of the night sky. The location of the cottage is ideal for Newgale beach (one of our favourite Pembrokeshire beaches) and not far from Solva. We would happily stay at Dill Cottage again.

  • "The house was fine but in need of a refresh."

The location is great. The sofas and bed are uncomfortable - we have both come away with backache. The upstairs shower head is disgusting, so we only used the downstairs shower, which was is nice and there was plenty of hot water. The dinning table was filthy when we arrived and the washing machine is in need a really good clean. Netflix or a smart TV would be a good addition.

  • "This property has great potential but felt short of our expectations and we were glad to be home."

We are not dog owners and unfortunately we did not realise that dog friendly would mean that on arrival the property would smell, that there would be obvious damage to the property from dogs and dog hairs on bedding. The new sofas which were apparently only installed the previous week had mud splatters over them but ultimately they were obviously cheap and so uncomfortable to sit on that we spent most of the time sat at the kitchen table. The king size bed was also uncomfortable. Mark from Coast and Country was very responsive and professional in helping us to resolve some of the issues.

  • "Loved the property."

It was very tastefully furnished and decorated. In particular, we loved the prints - certainly have a shared appreciation for Doug Hyde. Children found it fascinating watching the farmer at work from the very child friendly and safe garden. It is a good location for visiting all the castles, farms, and sandy beaches of South West Wales. The children particularly enjoyed their time at The Bug Farm, a boat trip from St. Justinian's and our visit to St. David's. Thank you.

  • "What a shame!"

This house has all the potential to become a beautiful retreat with lots of walking and beaches nearby. However, it has clearly not been properly maintained for some time and the layout, especially upstairs, is just dangerous. The house was not very clean either. We had to call Sykes the day after we arrived and told them all our issues and also met the maintenance guy who was lovely. This house is for sale so don’t expect anything to be rectified. We had to buy some pillows as the ones in the house were useless and the double bed mattress was terrible. We had to sleep in the kids bedroom. The so called welcome hamper was a joke. You could have put in milk, something to make a hot drink with, like teabags or the coffee we were expecting - or the wine!! Not a tough chunk of bread without anything to put on it and some soggy soap. This place is great if you’re a dog but not if you’re the one paying the bill for it. The lounge cushion summed up our experience- it said “Dogs welcome, people tolerated” We left a big maintenance list in the notebook for the housekeeper (as requested) but doubt if much of it will get done. The positive things were the good supply of kid’s stuff in the garage and also the nice view and private garden. Would we go back? Not likely.

  • "The house is perfectly siituated for walks along the coast and boat- and Bird watching trips."

We liked to sit in the kitchen at the long table. However the chairs as well as the matrasses don’t meet the standard of a Sykes cottage. We heard this cottage is currently for sale so we don’t expect that the owners are willing to invest in any improvements.

  • "Hi, having just returned from dill cottage we were pleased to see it from the outside, however on the inside it was not so pleasing."

In our opinion the property was not very clean and not well maintained. The cottage has the potential to be the 4.5* rating but to obtain that score it is in need of a good renovation as it is it is only worth 2*. The toilet roll holder was of the wall. The shower downstairs was dirty inside and out and the cubicle has got a lot of black mould. The area between the bedroom and kitchen has a funny smell if you have both doors closed (as mentioned in another review) The kitchen was ok but the table has a lot of crumbs in the joints on the top not very hygenic. and the microwave was dirty. The living room was nice but the settees must be the worse I have ever sat on and very tatty. The TV is not sky TV as in the write up as there is no viewing card, and the remote was not very good. No mention of the code for the WIFI there is a space in the paperwork but it is blank??I worked it out eventually!! there was also many dead flies and dust behind the table with the WIFI box on it. There were black dog hairs on the stairs dust webs in many places . All in all the property was not up to the standard of the other Sykes properties we have been in and certainly not worth the amount of money we have paid!!!!!

Thank you for your comments. We were saddened to hear of your disappointment with Dill Cottage and wish you had let us know of any issues on arrival as we would have liked to rectify them immediately. We have investigated the odour but have been unable to detect anything that may be causing it. The loo roll holder has now been repaired. We do plan to renew the sofas soon. The TV does have a SKY card and it is working. The wifi code is in the cottage information folder and on the back of the router. This is a pet friendly property and sometimes a few stray dog hairs will escape the hoover - we are sorry about this. Property Owner

  • "Well equipped cottage with lots of little extra touches - dog toys, books, games and lovely welcome hamper."

Felt that there weren't enough instructions for the actual property i.e. boiler, hot water, bin collection day etc. Couldn't get enough hot water upstairs so had to use downstairs shower. Beds weren't very comfortable! As we had good weather and made use of the garden, it would have been nice to have some comfortable relaxer chairs. Lovely location and plenty to do.

  • "On the whole a well equipped cottage, comfortable beds good information provided and welcome basket was welcome!"

The garden was just right backing directly onto field. The response to our lack of hot water was excellent. Only niggles were the lock on the upstairs bathroom door came off, the kitchen was not quite as clean as we would have liked, parking a bit snug for 2 cars… reversing was fun

  • "We liked the property, however it looks tired and the settee was very uncomfortable and the double bed was also not at all comfortable."

There was also a smell in the space between the kitchen and down stairs bedroom. The location was good and views were excellent but the above caused us some discomfort. There was a problem with the boiler which we rectified under direction. So all in all it needs some attention.

  • "Not up to Sykes standard, yes it was dog friendly, but the sofas were horrendous, not comfy at all, dips in the armrests so you could feel the wood."

Beds comfy but very squeaky. Downstairs bed very loose & unsafe. Lots of dust especially under the double bed, which isn't the one shown in the pictures online. We have taken pictures, also dead flies in the bedside lamps. Bedding smelt dirty & musty with stsins on! Will use Sykes again, as never had a problem with any stays until this one.

  • "The owners have gone above and beyond to make this property exceptional for people and pets alike."

As soon as we entered the property, my dog found the toy box and had a lovely time with it. The high quality dog treats, and all the other touches were very much appreciated. The house is well equipped, and the location great for all kinds of exploring despite the awful weather. Not mentioned in anything is the Roch Gate shop, nearby, which has a post office and an ATM, as well as carrying newspapers. We found it very useful, particularly as we were recent out of season guests. It is very quiet there, and the 3 foot fence more than adequate to contain our two Border Collies. Of course, the welcome package was very well received. Highly recommend.

It was cosy and welcoming and very safe for our two dogs in the pretty garden. It had everything we needed and we enjoyed a nice relaxing week. It’s not far from the lovely beach at Newgale and close enough to drive to nearby places like Solva where there are several very nice pubs.

  • "Generally this was a lovely, comfortable cottage in a peaceful location."

It had all the facilities described and the welcome pack was great. We particularly liked how dog friendly it was and how the owners had thoughtfully pointed out the height of the back fence (luckily our 2 Scotties were never going to jump over a 3ft fence!). It’s proximity to the coastal path was a real bonus but it isn’t in easy walking distance of a pub or a shop.

This area is in tranquil beautiful part of Pembrokeshire and we have enjoyed stunning scenery on our cliff top walks and on the beach. There are lovely countryside footpaths leading straight from the cottage which we have explored with Barney, our PBGV (Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen). The special touches such as the goody box were much appreciated - especially by Barney who loved the chicken treats !

  • "We had a great 2 weeks in Dill Cottage."

The cottage supplies everything you need for a comfortable base from which to explore South Wales, and is extremely dog friendly. The welcome pack was very thoughtful. Whilst the cows in the field at the bottom of the garden are entertaining, they also attracted many many flies if the kitchen door is open. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Dill Cottage and would return, and recommend to others.
