  • "Had a lovely week in Ailfryn, although the weather wasn’t always kind."

Pros House is very well equipped. In the kitchen everything was there that we needed. Downstairs layout is lovely. Kitchen and utility are spacious and we spent a lot of time in the conservatory. Lounge is very cosy and welcoming too. Beds very comfy, slept well. The walk down into Newport is not far at all and there is an excellent choice of pubs and restaurants to eat, even with a dog. Loved the food in the Golden Lion, even tried Llys Meddyg as you can take dogs into their secret garden pods which was also very nice. Take away fish and chips from Morawelon were excellent, one of the best meals of the stay! Cons Main bathroom is rather small, my son is 6ft 4in, so the sloping roof is a bit challenging. Not many mirrors, the main bedroom (which is lovely btw) only has a hand mirror which is a little annoying. Television is rather small for the living room and on wet weather days you may need to use it. We had no issue with the driveway, yes you have to watch the traffic but there is a mirror. Would definitely recommend the house it was a lovely base for three generations of family. There is a very helpful folder of local activities and restaurants. Great place for a holiday.

  • "Very well equipped and very spacious, perfect for our Family, us oldies slept downstairs with our own en suite and Son, Daughter in Law and two Children slept upstairs, the layout couldn't have been better, very spacious kitchen with everything we could possibly need, room for all six to get round the dining table and ample room to spread out in the lounge."

The only negatives are that the pull out onto the road is particularly hazardous and it really needs a mirror on the wall opposite to make it safer, cutting the hedge back on the right would also help visibility, the second is minor really, some more comfortable outside furniture would have been nice

  • "We all loved our stay in Ailfryn."

It was immaculately clean and had everything we needed. The beds were super comfy, and the views from upper levels were really good (glimpse of the sea from the conservatory downstairs, which we spent a lot of time in!) The welcome gift and a few necessary items left were super nice and helpful. Everything was as expected and described. The town was an easy walk downhill, the nearest beach (Parrog) was as described, though it was better at lower tides when we could walk across the shallow waters to Newport Beach. Newport Beach was worth the walk/drive if you want safer, supervised swimming and sandy beach, though when we were there the waves were strong! Loads to see locally, and some super walks, and we had a mix of days in the local area and some days when we drove out and about. Some very small suggestions for improvement: - please leave basic info on how to use induction hob - eg took me a while to work out how to unlock, but easier once I had googled and knew how! - as others have said, a little tricky driving out of property, but fine if you take time and care.

  • "Pros: Ailfryn is a great cottage and ideal for exploring the local area."

It is a large, well equipped, comfortable cottage on the edge of Newport village. The garden is a nice place to relax and the garage is ideal for storing bikes or beach kit. The sea view from the first floor is fantastic. The local village has an excellent butcher, health food shop and some great pubs too. Cons: Previous comments about exiting the property in your car are correct. It can be very tricky but it just requires a bit of patience as the road isn't that busy. A better mirror would certainly be useful. The induction was hob was cracked when we arrived and didn't work very well. We expected it to be replaced asap as agreed on the phone but that did not happen whilst we were there. That was very frustrating.

  • "This was an excellent and clean holiday property."

Very well equipped kitchen with plenty of pans etc. The only difficulty is leaving by car as the wall mounted mirror is missing and the neighbour's mirror doesn't give a good view of the road.

  • "Our stay at the Cottage was very enjoyable, it was clean, spacious, warm & comfortable."

It would have been nice to have a radio/tv in kitchen the only drawback was getting on to the main road as we were unable to see traffic approaching from both sides as the mirror was broken. The only other issue we had was the mobile telephone reception, had to drive 20 minutes to get a signal. On the whole liked the cottage and the views.

  • "We really loved staying at Ailfryn, it was cosy, beautifully decorated and well equipped."

Great location and the house and garden were perfect for our little cockapoo. Lovely walks nearby and super views of the estuary from the house. We had trouble with the TV and weren’t able to watch it and clearer instructions for the hob would have been appreciated but everything else was excellent and we had a lovely holiday!

Good garden for the dog, well equipped spacious property, sea views. A return which lived up to the previous stay. A further return visit is planned has everything we wanted for a break.

  • "Lovely cottage in a great location for Newport and Parrog."

Lots of lovely walks nearby. The cottage was very comfortable and well appointed. Beds were comfortable and not hard like a lot of cottages we have stayed in. Our dachshund loved the garden and we felt safe that she couldn't escape which was fantastic as it's not always easy finding a fully enclosed garden. Just a few little touches would make it perfect. Such as having a rug in the bedroom to stand on when dressing. A full length mirror would be nice. Some nicer outdoor furniture and a bit of TLC of the patio area. Overall we would stay here again.

  • "The house surpassed our expectations."

The sea view is lovely and we really enjoyed the garden and the shared areas. Beds were really comfortable. Kitchen and utility areas were really well equipped too. Would be more than happy to stay here again and recommend to others. Newport is a beautiful part of the world! Minor quibble: more hand towels in particular would have been good so we could have changed them mid stay, and more dishwasher tabs. Otherwise perfect!

  • "'Ailfryn' was the perfect base for our holiday - Walking distance to a beautiful beach."

Newport itself is a brilliant location. Plenty of friendly pubs with good food (certainly recommend the curries at The Royal Oak), and great amenities right on the doorstep. Loads of fabulous days-out just a short drive away, and some of the most spectacular and beautiful scenery you could hope to enjoy - tons of fabulous walks to choose from. The property itself had everything a group of 8 people could need, and was really well looked after. If we were to give any constructive criticism, it would be to suggest that there be more garden furniture (the weather was brilliant during our stay, so we were outside a lot). All in all, a great property in a beautiful location. Thank you.

The new one is fab! Much lighter and easier to socialise whilst cooking. We really like the house and location ….and the new smart TV in the lounge was also a bonus! Would be great to have some simple tea/coffee and milk available on arrival.

The only things that could have been better were the downstairs shower wasn’t very powerful and some nice garden furniture would have been a bonus. The flowers and wine on arrival were a nice touch, as was the courtesy call we received at the beginning of our stay. I would definitely recommend this holiday cottage and would book it again.

  • "Ailfryn was perfect for our needs and we had a fabulous holiday."

The property was very clean when we arrived. The layout was great for our needs with a big kitchen and dining area. The conservatory off the kitchen dining area was a huge plus - particularly when the weather was less than perfect - with partial views of the beach. The kitchen looked like new and was very well equipped with induction hob and all the pots, pans and cutlery one could need. The downstairs shower room was also like new and was very helpful for my elderly father. The beds were comfortable and the bed linens of good quality. Overall, a highly recommended property, and we will definitely be booking again!

  • "This was our second stay at Ailfryn ( we had a week there in June last year) and it was great to see how much the property had been improved from last year, a huge credit to the owners."

The kitchen refurbishment is brilliant and has totally transformed the downstairs and the new downstairs shower/ toilet was also a very welcome addition. It is also worth mentioning that we thought the general kitchen facilities were extremely comprehensive and without doubt the best we have ever experienced in over 25 years staying at cottages in West Wales. It was also a very nice touch to find a bottle of wine on our arrival - that was really appreciated. There were no negative comments except that the upstairs bathroom shower ( whilst a very welcome addition) suffered from very poor water pressure which meant it was effectively unusable. This was no fault of the owners of course but is worth mentioning to pass on to the owners. All in all, a superb property and one which is fully deserving of 5 stars ( out of 5)!

  • "A lovely property within 10 mins walk of the local pubs and shops."

Excellent standard of accomodation. Only criticism is despite having new bathroom and shower over the bath upstairs the water pressure means it cannot be used as a shower. This is minor inconvenience as the downstairs shower is excellent. Woukd definately stay again.

Although located on a main road this wasn't a problem and not something we were aware of most of the time. We all slept well. The new kitchen and bathroom were fabulous. The views from the cottage are amazing. We had a sunny week in a beautiful area of the world. Would highly recommend to stay. We are already thinking of booking in the future.

  • "The cottage is in a super position and has a lot of great features."

However it is in a pretty tired condition. The kitchen needs refurbishing. The shower is very small for such a large property and more of a drizzle. The upstairs toilet takes a very long time to refill. Toilet cleaning products would be helpful. The sink plug upstairs got stuck. The listings stated that a basket of logs would be provided but they weren’t. None of this prevented us from enjoying our stay in Newport, which is a delightful area.

  • "On arrival neither of the showers were working properly - in fact the one in the bathroom didn't work at all."

Even after the plumber had called and tried to fix the problems the showers were not satisfactory. The overall cleanliness was well below par. The oven was dirty, there were stains on the stair carpet and on the sofas in the sitting room. The windows and window sills were marked with deposits from flys. One of the blinds in the bedroom on the right at the top of the stairs was totally inadequate and let in the light from the garden next door. The duvets were summer weight and there were no extra blankets available. Would appreciate larger (and pale coloured) bath towels. However, having said all that Ailfryn is a lovely house in a wonderful position with views across the estuary that one would never get tired of looking at. Both the town and the beech are in walking distance even for those of us of a 'certain age'. Ailfryn is in desperate need of some refurbishment and TLC. Nice garden again in need of some tlc. It appeared to be dog proof as neither of ours managed to get out despite one of them being an escape artist! Plenty of parking - tricky exit.

  • "The freezer in the garage was completely frozen up so I had to spend the first day of our holiday defrosting it."

The cleaners apparently said they could not do it in one day but I managed it. It clearly had not been defrosted for some considerable time. A new fridge/freezer was scheduled to arrive - when asked if we wanted it we said very clearly that we did not want it during our stay. It arrived unannounced on the Friday afternoon when we were in the middle of the funeral of a dear friend - online of course. Could not have been worse timing - with no warning.

  • "Lovely views in a brilliant location but for what we paid we were very disappointed in the accomodation."

The downstairs bathroom wasn't nice, the kitchen units were not in good condition and the fridge was leaking. Generally it felt tired. Additionally exiting the property in a car is perilous with better visibility required, even cutting back the hedge would help.

The owners are planning an overhaul of the property during the winter months. We had not been made aware at the time that the fridge was leaking. This has since been rectified (blocked drainage hole) and a new fridge has been delivered. Property Owner

Very well located for the village and beaches. I left a message in the house for the caretakers / cleaners highlighting a few problems which hopefully can be resolved prior to the next visitors arriving. The bathroom light did not have a pull cord, the DVD player did not work and the fittings for the cutlery drawer and under oven cupboard were loose. In general, the kitchen needs some renovation. We would love to stay again in the future and we had a great family holiday.

  • "Ailfryn is in an excellent location, but the property needs some TLC."

There are signs of damp & it’s generally tired & needs upgrading. It definitely needs comfortable garden furniture,& the upstairs over bath shower needs a shower screen/curtain to be usable. The garden is not dog friendly. The fence at the end of the garden is around 50cm high, so easily jumpable for an active larger dog ( particularly when there are wild rabbits in the neighbours’ garden!). The freezer of the fridge freezer in the house wasn’t in use, so we had to use the freezer in the garage which was inconvenient. With a little thought & investment Ailfryn could be really special. Newport is a lovely place & I’d definitely recommend visiting.
