“After a challenging drive we arrived at The Bothy at 7pm, a bijou bolthole in a quiet part of lower Solva that would make a great 4 night post lockdown break.”

But the property was chilly and all the radiators were cold. And so the saga begins. The property uses a Heatmiser 'SmartStat' programmer and Room Thermostat with WiFi. The display showed an error code E1. Thankfully the owner had left the 40 page user manual which had a list of the falt codes, and this indicated that the Floor Probe was not working. After ploughing through the 21 pages of instructions, we found the Optional Menu pages on the Heatmiser which had a 'Sensor Selection' feature. I changed the sensor setting to Air Temperature only and the boiler burst into life! Unfortunately, the radiators only made it to warm and the boiler went off at 9.30pm. We called it a day but were rudely awoken at 5.30am by the boiler whoomphing into life just outside the bedroom door. Getting up at 7.30am the boiler promptly turned itself off. Checking the settings on the Heatmiser all was fine with the heat request 'flame' symbol displayed. The property owners specifically ask that you not to adjust the controls on the boiler but on inspection there were 3 problems. The clock of the boiler was still on Summer Time, the dial that sets the heating temperature had been turned down, despite a black arrow marking the correct position and finally the boiler was in Auto mode so was using the default factory on and off times. On at 6.30am off at 8.30am them on at 4.30pm and off at 10.30pm. I adjusted the clock and turned up the heat dial and used the Heatmiser to stop the boiler firing up until 7.30am but left it in Automode, So now we had hot radiators and quiet mornings but accepted there was no heating from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Thankfully it was a mild week. The controls are way too complex for a holiday let. Automode is not compatible to rentals in winter.
