  • "Another excellent holiday at Penrose cottage."

The views, the wildlife, from squirrels to buzzards and kites and any number of small birds. Friendly tame sheep, horses to feed and all backed up by Keith, the owners, encyclopaedic knowledge of the local area. Comfortable and warm, well equipped with three good sized double bedrooms. Walking directly from the cottage, wether it be on the old railway or Brecon canal, up the mountain for the more energetic to the keeper’s pond, or after a short car journey up Sugar Loaf. Highly recommended. Keith and Dianne are excellent hostes, as is Glen a lovely friendly collie who loves his walks.

It was warm, which was nice after long days out. It was clean. It felt incredibly homely. BONUS: There was sheep :) The view outside was stunning which made early mornings much more pleasant A few things to note was some of the stairs are uneven but once you've done them once you remember the ones to watch out for. Some locks were tougher to do but all rooms had a functioning lock. I really liked how the property was accessible inside (ground floor bedroom, wet room, rails on both side of the stairs) one personal thing was the mattresses wasn't the most comfortable, so I'd reccomend bringing an extra duvet that you can lay down for extra padding if you suffer with any chronic pain etc Hope to stay again in the future :)

  • "The location was incredible and the surroundings were really nice to explore, we wandered along the canals and old train tracks and we could easily wander up to the top of the mountains surroundings the house for some immaculate views."

Keepers pool nearby was a lovely place to wild swim and Keith had loads of suggestions for walks and days out. He was always around to help and was insistent we have a relaxing time, helping clear up some mess made by the fluffy cat when we left the food waste bin outside without realising it would be raided and scattered everywhere. The house had a lovely garden and we really enjoyed sitting out there to eat and stare out at the mountains. It was nice to have seperate bathrooms for each of the bedrooms and the space was well maintained. The only small things to mention are that the stairs are an even heights and lead to constant tripping, and the knives in the kitchen were incredibly blunt. Might not be a problem for people who don't enjoy cooking on their holidays but we do and it was a struggle to prepare food. Apart from these small things, we really enjoyed the stay and feeding the very friendly sheep in the field next door was a highlight :)

There are one or two repairs required to bring Penrose back to excellent, but overall it is comfortable and we have enjoyed Christmas 2022 there very much indeed. Mum is in a wheelchair and did not like the bathroom floor as it is not anti-slip but she managed. One thing to point out is that althought the lisiting states a fridge freezer being in situ in reality it has a larder fridge with an icemaking compartment which meant that the ice I had bought had to be sacrificed to keep the parsnips frozen. The oven is overly complicated although very efficient once the instructions have been read (A must) also we ate out at The Anatolian Turkish restaurant in Abervaggenny and it is excellent. The first time there was 2 of us, and this time 6, and the downstairs living area felt a bit too cramped for us all. The cottage had all the facilities & cooking utensils we needed and it’s not too far to a supermarket. I love the cottage & Keith the host, but it looks tired in places & could do with a bit of TLC! The stunning views of course really make this place so special, along with being surrounded by nature, beautiful sunrises & bright stars in the black night sky. There’s no light pollution here! Even has Netflix on the TV. We did book last minute so may be the reason it wasn't perfectly clean and no supply of soap in the bathrooms when we arrived. There was however a good supply of toilet paper and dishwasher tablets which is not always the case. The garden has a wonderful view and was great for our BBQ. One fault that we thought was quite bad is the stairs going to the bedrooms. The top 3 stairs are different heights and whilst holding my baby I slipped down one of them, thankfully I was holding on to the banister! Also all of us tripped up the last but one step a few times. On the whole though the property is very nice.

We had a great break and would definitely like to return again The pictures and details on Sykes site are very out of date and the owners has been trying without success to get someone to update them. It's not fair on them as the cottage has been upgraded in a lot of ways, these are the things we would like to point out 1) there is a very nice conservatory off the living room that allows access to the garden and the amazing views ( not mentioned at all on the details) 2) The seating in the garden has a shelter around it allowing all weather viewing 3) The furniture is now a modern comfy corner sofa 4) the tv is a full size on in the living room 5) the beds now have duvets on them not bed spreads and the curtains have been renewed 6) the owners mobile number is an old one and has not been updated as requested by the owner COME ON SYKES DO THE BASICS RIGHT SO THE OWNER AND CUSTOMERS CAN GET A REAL FEEL FOR THIS LOVELY COTTAGE

The beds are very comfortable and the property is well-equipped. A few minor things - many of the drawer handles on bedside drawers seemed to have come off; the latch to the bedroom door could also do with repairing (or a door wedge / door stop be provided) because if you have the window open at night the door gusts open and shut despite the small piece of cord to hold it in place. The views of sugar loaf mountain and other local mountains and the valley containing Abergavenny were fantastic and very serene watching the sun rise. The farm is located on a small narrow lane but this is just off an easy to reach dual carriageway with good access by car to local towns and shops, so although you get the peace and quiet, you are only 10-15mins away from everything you need (not in the middle of nowhere like some cottages). Will definitely book again one day! What would be a bonus: a working DVD player, TV in main lounge with more connections to add hard drive to watch movies etc, and possibly wifi but these are small gripes.

  • "Couldn't fault it!"

Very kind hosts who went out of their way to make sure that we had a good holiday. Would recommend this cottage to anybody, especially wheelchair users.
