  • "We thought the property was very tired looking."

No curtains at the lounge windows, which would have helped keep it warm. Would have been nice if a few logs and kindling had been left. About 5 radiators did not work and it was the coldest weekend of the year so especially for the guests staying in the downstairs bedroom they were freezing. Beautiful area and could be such a beautiful house but we wouldn't stay there again.

We are so sorry that the house did not meet your expectations. We did our very best to rectify the heating as soon as you notified us of the problem. The heating was restored on the same day as your arrival at the property, thanks to the immediate arrival of our plumber. Our caretaker leaves her number for guests so that we can always respond as quickly as possible to any unforeseen difficulties. Thank you. All the best Property Owner

  • "Our family of 9 had a great stay at Woodhill Cottage for a week - the large main living area and garden were especially suited to our number including 3 children."

We were pleasantly surprised to find so many books, games and toys throughout the house for children and adults alike that made for some memorable times when the weather wasn't so favourable. We would recommend this to other groups of a similar size and would consider returning again in the future. We noticed that the property could do with some TLC with respect to a touch up of paint, a deeper clean and some minor maintenance to fix broken lightbulbs, loose dining chairs and broken bed slats but we were able to look past these things or work around them for most of the duration of our stay.

  • "We had a great time in this lovely house."

There was plenty of space for the nine of us to relax and ample room in all the bedrooms. It was well equipped too so although there are some great places to eat out nearby, self catering for the whole family was not a problem. We would definitely stay here again, especially as walking and cycling in the Surrey Hills are literally on the doorstep and if the weather fails… there are plenty of books and games provided. Really enjoyed our stay. Thank you

It was so welcoming, homely and spacious. The sunroom was a particular favourite as was the small front room, which was perfectly cosy for watching a film. The kitchen had everything needed and the AGA was lovely and warm constantly. The bedrooms were comfortable and bright and we slept well. The garden was great for watching the wildlife, squirrels, pheasants and a variety of smaller birds. The week spent at Woodhill Cottage was very enjoyable and relaxing.

  • "This was a very welcoming property and the great space downstairs was prefect for our large family gathering."

The kitchen was very well equipped and made it easy to cater for some large meals. The garden room was delightful and the range of games stacked on the shelves a real bonus. The weather was not brilliant, so we did not really take advantage of the huge garden but this would have been a real attraction in drier conditions. There was plenty of space for badminton or any outdoor games but you would need to take those yourself. The little summer house was a nice touch to store bikes or games but was in need of a bit of a tidy. The milk and butter in the fridge was a welcome gift and the provision of dish washer and washing tablets also appreciated. We found fitting a stair gate a little tricky due to the narrow stairs. We had a toddler and a crawler, so they needed watching at all times on the steps down to the garden room and around the hot Arga but there were plenty of us to keep a watch out so that was not too much of a problem. The toddler loved the fact that there were so many books in the bedroom with the two singe beds. This was a lovely room for little ones. One criticism, the bathroom really could benefit from a deep clean. The sink was harboring mold around the open rim and the floor at the side of the bath, between bath and sink, had been missed in the clean, I think. The plane glass in the bathroom window was also a bit disconcerting. Its a difficult place for a curtain or blind for sure but maybe frosted glass would help with privacy? Although the property is not overlooked at the back by housing, there were people walking in the woods at the back, so we felt a bit more privacy when in the house would have been appropriate. We very much enjoyed our stay overall. The area is beautiful and the house is in a lovely, quiet and rural location. The bird life in the garden was a joy too.

Really spacious and comfortable cottage and the housekeeper was helpful. Location is great, quiet and secluded enough. Locks behind toilet and bathroom doors will help as groups may not always be from a single household

The only item that seemed to be missing was a teapot! We loved the design and decor of the property, and the large sunny living room which led out onto the terrace was a pleasure to sit in. There were many books, puzzles and games provided at the property, and we made use of these. Croquet on the large lawn was fun! In terms of drawbacks the lack of a mobile phone signal at the Cottage was an inconvenience, and although WiFi was available we found that it wasn't good enough to stream programmes on iplayer. There isn't a grocery store within walking distance, but we found that the Farm Shop at Abinger Hammer about a mile away was great for topping up. All in all a great property for a family holiday in the Surrey Hills, which catered for people of all ages.

We had 2 issues, the WiFi is very intermittent and the cottage was not clean on arrival. There were dead flies in cups in the cupboard and under furniture. The floors were so filthy it made your socks dirty!

We are so sorry that you felt the house was not clean. We (the owners) were actually at the house the week before you and did a deep clean throughout - including all of the kitchen cupboards. We also replaced the two sofas and as a result of moving the furniture vacuumed thoroughly. We have also confirmed with our caretaker that she thoroughly vacuumed and washed all floors. We have only had fantastic reviews for her work to date. We did have the boiler serviced just before you came, and perhaps there was some residual dust as a result, but that would have only been in the front entrance and utility room. Our caretaker is exceptional, and leaves her number for all visitors in case there are any issues. If only you had contacted her when you arrived, she would have happily attended to any additional cleaning that you felt was required. We always endeavor to make sure that the house is in top form, as we would have it for ourselves, and the reviews that visitors have left in our guestbook have consistently reflected this.he WIFI in the village is as strong as it can be, but perhaps will be upgraded soon. In the meantime, we find it works well for streaming Netflix and surfing the internet. But if multiple devices are trying to stream video at the same time, this can be intermittent and patchy. In addition, the signal is strongest in the main part of the house - although we have provided a booster to extend the service to the extent possible.Thank you for describing the cottage as really lovely Property Owner

  • "It grieves me to write this, but the cottage was filthy."

I don’t mind old or worn. A new chair can sit just as comfortably as an old chair, but when it comes to hygiene, only one way will do. The house needs a decent spring clean and the contents needs to be reviewed. Many of the dining room chairs were very rickety and could break at any moment. Other specific issues: - Main bathroom’s bath had soap scum ring all around the bath with 3 short black curly hair in it. - The two yellow cups in the main bathroom was covered in toothpaste as well as the sink. - The taps in both bathroom sinks had toothpaste splatter. - In the kitchen behind the breadtin next to the Aga, was a piece of food, looked like a small tomato that was shrivelling up. - Whomever unpacked the dishwasher last must have had greasy/oily hands, as the “clean” plates in the cupboard had greasy fingerprints all over them. - The en-suite bathroom window’s curtain is covered in black mold. - The table covering in the dining room had a streak of what looked like egg yolk running down the side of it. - Many of the dishes in the top right hand drawer next to the electric cooktop, has cracks in them (the red one, one of the blue spotty ones and many other small ones.) We did not use these, in case they broke. - We could not get any of the radiators upstairs to turn on, no matter how high we turned the heat. - Neither of the towel bars in the bathrooms ever switched on. - We were not cold upstairs as thankfully the floorboards had so many gaps the heat from down stairs made its way up. - The fridge is dirty with bits of food remains sprinkled throughout. - The master bedroom’s bed lost one of its slats when my husband sat down to tie his shoes. - The bed in one of the kids’ rooms (pink room with only one bed) also dropped a slat. We got there early and the housekeeper was very kind to allow us in as she was finishing the kitchen floor. She made us a cup of tea and it certainly was much appreciated. We would love to stay at this cottage again. Great location! It is spacious and the woods out back a real treat for the kids, but alas it needs some major cleaning and a good overall in its contents. Not sure if all Sykes’ cottages are in this state. Rented twice from Classic Cottages before and their cottages were spotless (so it can be done).

Dear Mrs Du Preez, we are surprised that you felt the accommodation was not clean and the standards were below your expectations, as this is contrary to the vast majority of feedback we have received over the years. We very much regret that you felt this way. We do want to keep improving the cottage for guests' enjoyment, and so we have taken careful note of the points you make and we have addressed several of them. In particular, we are so sorry that the heating failed. A new part was required, and the heating has now been fixed. The bed frame slats have also been replaced. The dining room table and chairs are recently purchased antiques, from the local market town of Dorking. We assure guests they are not likely to collapse. Our caretaker has been with us for years, and we are grateful she was able to accommodate your early arrival and the change-over time required between guests to the best of her ability. However she apologises for missing some cleaning tasks. Our caretaker leaves a note with her number so that guests may contact her in case there are any issues, and she is always more than happy to come round to ensure that all is in good order. We hope that your next stay is a much improved experienced for you. With kind regards Paul and Courtenay (Owners) Property Owner

The cottage is according the description although it does miss abit of TLC as someone before described. The red couch in the sittingroom is a ruin and should be replaced. The toilet in the master bedroom is not working well and the toilet seat should be replaced. For this price tag it should be in good order. Despite those facts, we recommend this cottage. It is a nice location, well equiped and in a very beautiful area. Trainstation in Guildford for London is a 30 minutes drive. Good pubs in the village. The housekeeping is excellent. She came straight away when the wifi was not working at arrival.

Dear Mr GruterWe are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and would recommend this cottage. We are constantly looking to surpass expectations from our guests and so have taken your points on board. A lovely new sofa by Loaf is arriving at the cottage soon, and we are replacing the toilet seat in the master bedroom ensuite. We will continue to maintain the cottage at a high standard. The upgrades that we are constantly making to the cottage are partly why we have received such positive comments in our guest book.
