  • "Fabulous cottage, great location, comfy beds and sofas."

We had the benefit of good weather even if the rain storm was unexpected it was atmospheric and refreshing. Biccies, milk and coffee were a nice welcome on our arrival. No complaints re cleanliness or equipment other than a broken tin opener. Easy access to lots of places to visit - Bedale, Leyburn, Reeth, Ripon, Thirsk, Durham, York, Helmsley. Will definitely visit again.

  • "Such a great find !"

Just gorgeous and immaculate and the location is delightful. The owner is so likeable and on arrival you'll find these little extras like biscuits on the table and milk in the fridge etc. Far more than just basic amenities is provided. Everything shows great care. We wouldn't mind moving in ! It's a truly special place.

  • "Really enjoyed our stay at The Wheelhouse."

Only a couple of little suggestions, a table to put drinks on when sitting outside and maybe better chairs as they are so small, otherwise great place and the extra little touches by the owner of putting milk in the fridge and providing some cookies was very much appreciated. Great location for visiting places in North Yorkshire and all the neighbours were very friendly.

This is a lovely property, clean, well maintained, just a note on the freezer to say that's what it is would help though as I thought it was another fridge !!. This is our 2nd time here whilst we are at Croft circuit. We will be back. Thank you.

  • "The Wheelhouse is just amazing."

Absolutely immaculate, and so well equipped, nothing at all was missing. The beds were so comfortable, took no getting used to. I’ve never seen better folded bathroom towels either ! The attention to detail was superb, the little things like the bathroom cups in bags, the dishcloth, scrub, and gloves in a sealed bag, and the biscuits were a lovely finishing touch. Thank you for making us both welcome and very comfortable.

  • "We enjoyed a lovely stay at The Wheelhouse - it's in a great location for exploring the Dales and the Moors/coast."

Kitchen and bathroom were all of a high standard and spotlessly cleaned. Would only say for taller people, the low beams in the upper bedroom will be a serious issue - managed to hit my head a few times and I'm only 5ft2!

  • "Nice place, very clean."

Good hub for walking etc. warm welcome from care taker. Very friendly locals all keen to tell you about the history of the village etc. Second bedroom adequate but bed very low and beams could be an issue for taller people. The only real grumble was the pillows which were like lead and really uncomfortable. Would not put us off stayin again. Thank you.

Thank you for your feedback, we're glad you mainly enjoyed your stay. With regard to your comments on the pillows we try to cater for all, and each king size bed has two soft pillows and two firm to give the maximum options. Kind regards Property Owner

  • "The house was great and very clean."

It was comfortable and the cooking and kitchen facilities were very good. There is no private garden for relaxation but this was made clear in the listing. You can sit out on the green but it's not very private. The only minor discomfort was the low bed in the attic room, not for sleeping, but getting in and out of the bed could be problematic for older people. I would highly recommend the property and it was great for exploring the North Yorkshire Dales. We met the owner whilst we there and he was extremely pleasant and accommodating.

We were welcomed by a selection of goodies including a bottle of fizz in the fridge and sweets and fruit for the kids to get stuck into. Very clean, good sized main bathroom and bedroom and the kitchen has everything you need. Fully stocked DVD library too for cosy nights in front of the wood burner. The property is nestled in amongst stunning weeping willows, right next to a stream, which the kids loved. Incredible what they’ve achieved in the space they have available - highly recommend.

This charming abode was built in the 1850s, and maintains traditional character with many original features of the former wheelhouse․ It is the inspiration for the illustration by the famous artist Rodney Matthews, entitled 'The Retreat'.

The features include a spectacular beamed ceiling, and parts of the original workings, adding to the immense charm and quirkiness of this homely cottage.

The open-plan living space features a well-equipped kitchen, dining area and sitting area with stylish sofas, a woodburning stove, and TV, all tastefully furnished with contemporary styling․ Featuring original character with exposed beams, this room is perfect for a snug winter's night enjoying a hearty meal and unwinding with a glass of wine by the fire.

Retire to the ground-floor master bedroom, boasting en-suite facilities, or choose the first-floor king-size room․ The upstairs room is home to a fabulous 'secret window' which overlooks the living space, as well as intimate sloped ceilings, and airy Velux windows.

Spend a relaxing Friday night letting a hot bubble bath soothe your muscles in the family bathroom, or let the spacious shower refresh your mind first thing in the morning.

Enjoy a stroll along the nearby stream, listening to the flowing beck on a tranquil afternoon, or visit the nearby Roman ruins in Piercebridge․ The more energetic can take advantage of the many walks available in this attractive area including the renowned Teesdale Way, just a mile from the cottage.

Not far from the property is a well-stocked, friendly village shop for you to pick up all your essentials on your self-catered stay, as well as a lovely country pub where you can enjoy an ice cold pint.

A short drive away is the fascinating market town of Barnard Castle, with its cobbled streets, quaint alleyways, The Bowes Museum of Art and of course, its dramatic castle which you can explore.

Beautiful Raby Castle, the National Railway Museum, Richmond and the High Force waterfall are popular attractions which can be found nearby.

With the nearby Yorkshire Dales to explore and the North Pennines leading to the Lake District there is much to be discovered in the wider area.

The Wheelhouse offers a unique experience for a small family or group of friends looking to uncover a peaceful Yorkshire retreat.

Richmond 8 miles.

The attractive and peaceful Dales village of Barton is situated in lovely rolling countryside, just a few miles to the north of the popular market town of Richmond. Barton has a lovely village green, a stream winding its way through the village, a pub, a shop and a Post Office. Nearby Piercebridge is renowned for its Roman heritage, which dates back to around 70 AD. The Piercebridge Roman Fort Site, a recognised ancient monument, forms part of the region’s Dere Street Roman Trail, a celebration of the rich Roman heritage still to be enjoyed in the area. Forming part of the Teesdale Way, and within easy reach of the Cleveland Way, this walker’s paradise provides an excellent base to explore this delightful Dales area including nearby Swaledale and Weardale, with many bridleways, footpaths, cycle trails and lovely riverside walks available. Local attractions include the magnificent Raby Castle in nearby Staindrop, the Bowes Museum, York’s National Railway Museum, Durham Cathedral and of course the delightful market town of Barnard Castle. Nearby Richmond grew up around its castle set high above the River Swale, with panoramic river views. Within Richmond, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled market place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round. An ideal location for exploring all of Swaledale, Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales.
