On opening the fridge we were overwhelmed by the smell!!! It was clear nobody had cleaned it!!! The shelves were dirty and on closer inspection a lot of milk had spilt and had harden. Cutlery drawer was dirty and needed a good clean. The whole house needed a good clean and a lick of paint. I will send photos by email.

Plenty of space to chill, comfortable and well set out. The dogs loved it although our old girl was not too keen on the stones. The owners were very helpful and lovely people. Lovely walks from the doorstep as long or as short as you wanted. The Kirk Inn is definitely worth a visit, the landlord is such an interesting character and he keeps good beer.

What a truly unexpected scenic and beautiful area the whole of Teesdale is. The cottage was well equipped and we were able to cook some great meals and sit in the lovely dining area. We came without a hairdryer but the owner quickly went to Barnard Castle and bought one for the cottage. Very much appreciated. Just a great place to chill in a picture postcard village. Oh yes Eggleston Hall Gardens just down the road. What a gem! Hury resevoir 3.5 mile peaceful circular walk. Plenty of things to do. Loved it all!

The fire in the living room was spot on and welcoming on return from our walks. The owner was friendly and available to answer questions. Zoe went out of her way to try to find us Christmas markets sadly we were a week too early, but we appreciated the time and effort taken. The welcome pack was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed. We stayed in the larger bedroom (not the en-suite, which we left for our friends, who sadly had to cancel last minute) and the bed was very comfortable. We were a little cool though, so used extra duvets from the unused beds. A real find and we will be back.

    S. comfy bed, well equipped kitchen, fabulous walks from the back garden, Such a cosy cottage, couldn't wait to return each day after our jaunts out! The owners endured a long round trip on turnaround day to ensure everything was as it should be, They also left us a fantastic welcome pack, A couple of people have commented on the sofas, They are slightly low But suitably comfortable and most apt for a dog friendly cottage, I for one was relieved they were not fabric sofas that my dog could rub or lean against and get covered in hair!

Thank you for your lovely feedback and so glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for the pristine condition you left the cottage in. It did not go unnoticed that you had swept the carpets too. We look forward to welcoming you back. Property Owner

I even had to clean the toilet seat as it was dirty both sides. Complaints in the visitors book had clearly not been addressed as they were still relevant. The leather chairs need a good clean and prior to arrival “the cleaners” effort’s were obviously minimal with plenty of dust under the furniture. We won’t be booking this cottage again.

We were very pleased with our welcome gifts, and with our party having 2 dogs, they very much enjoyed the enclosed outside area. However, the cleanliness of the cottage was very disappointing, and, in general, the property needs some TLC. There was also very little communication from the Owners prior to our stay, and we had to get in contact with them to receive the key code details.

The house gave us the perfect base to explore the local area, as well as a couple of trips into Durham. Both the Teesdale Way and the rail path provided great walks from the doorstep, particularly enjoyed walking down to the river from the footpath at the back of the house. Good selection of local facilities including the pubs in the village, enjoyed a nice meal in the Rose and Crown. We can also recommend the tea room at Eggleston Hall! Slightly disappointed to not receive the starter pack of wood as advertised, especially as the weather was pretty bleak the first few days! Overall though, we really enjoyed our stay in County Durham!! Would love to return one day.

  • "An excellent, comfortable holiday cottage."

Plenty of space, with lots of character, in a beautiful village. Lots to do on the doorstep, with a lot of things to do within a short drive. The Rose & Crown in the village is an excellent local pub, with amazing food (make sure you pre book). One note of caution, we have never had to bring our own cleaning supplies previously (hand soap, cloths, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid) to a UK holiday cottage, but we’re surprised to find none of these supplied. We had to go and drive to the supermarket in Middleton to get all of these. This was not made clear to us before we left home, otherwise we would have brought them with us.

Pretty much everything you needed, good supply of crockery, pans, cutlery, towels etc. I think other reviewers forgot it was self catering as there was nothing to moan about! 2 good pubs in village & others in nearby villages which were a couple of miles walk along the old railway line so a nice walk. All in all a great place I'd happily go back to & would recommend to anybody wanting some peace & serenity in a lovely area.

  • "The Coach house was set up well for 3 generations of family and 2 dogs."

Three toilets and 2 bathrooms helped keep family peace. The kitchen/dining room had plenty of space and storage and was well equipped for all our needs. The WiFi was good, ( kept the teenagers happy). I had some questions for the owners before our trip and they were prompt and honest with replies and couldn’t have been more accommodating. There is a BBQ and a fire brazier which were used at length. My elderly father forgot his walking stick (which he needs) and the owners kindly asked in the local pub if we could borrow one for the week. Which they kindly obliged. Both the Kirk Inn and Rose and Crown are great pubs. There are many local walks from the accommodation which is great to not get in a car for a day or two. We managed swims in the river Tees in secluded beautiful spots, as well as paddle boarding, in several locations. (We found a local paddle board company that helped us out with those). We had a fabulous holiday which was made by having a very comfortable and well planned house for such occasions.

  • "We had a very enjoyable break."

The property was comfortable and well presented. On reading the reviews, others had reported that the shower leaked due to the shower tray not being deep enough. We noticed immediately that the plastic seal on the bottom of the door was on the wrong way and on adjusting it, we didn’t experience any leaks on the floor when showering. The door dripped a little on opening but apart from that, no dramas. The bed in the en-suite room was squeaky as others have reported. There were plenty of towels but because we like bath sheets, we took our own. I also took my own hairdryer (but I usually do). We enjoyed sitting in the garden in the late afternoon/early evening sunshine. The garden could do with a tidy but this didn’t spoil the peace. We had great days out to High Force Falls (with a beautiful walk along the river to Low Force Falls and visitor centre (recommend the cheese scone)), Ullswater, cycling in Hamsterley Forest and Durham. The circular walk from the property is beautiful. The fish and chips from Middleton were fab! We enjoyed drinks at both pubs in the village which couldn’t have been more different from each other!

  • "A mixed bag."

......a traditional house with some lovely features, let down by a few issues. Not as clean as we would have expected; under sofas and beds were not adequately hoovered. And finding personal items left by previous visitors is never good! Bathrooms were very clean, but towels were of poor quality. Disappointed not to have had a starter pack of wood left as promised - it was chilly some evenings although it was summer. Kitchen was fine overall, but again the fridge could have done with a good clean. Welcome pack was a nice touch. I imagine Covid restrictions were to blame for the lack of any operating instructions for appliances, which would have been useful! So overall we appreciated the location and the spaciousness of the cottage but as they say 'could do better'.

  • "We loved the location and the cottage itself is great."

We were 4 adults sharing as the other couple could not make it but I think 6 adults would feel a bit more squashed. Both bathrooms are small (very small sink in the ensuite!) and the double bed in the ensuite room could do with replacing (very squeaky frame just on sitting on it!). The shower in the main bathroom leaks out onto the tiles when in use and the cottage does smell a little damp on arrival. On the positive side the kitchen is well excellent and well equipped. We made use of the fire pit and BBQ outside although I feel the BBQ should be part of the cleaners checks between rentals to make sure it is clean and fit for use. We had to give it a major scrub prior to use as it looked like it had not been cleaned after it's last use which may have been a while ago. Despite all this we had a great time and would return and recommend. Lovely area for walking, scenery and pubs.

The Coach House is beautiful, located in a stunning small village however within striking distance (by car) to Durham, Barnard Castle, Raby Hall etc. We were not able to walk as much as we would have liked due to the weather but this did not spoil the stay. The Rose and Crown was fully booked (lockdown rush) therefore we had two wonderful meals at the Fox and Hounds in Cotherstone, absolutely lovely food, atmosphere and service, highly recommend. We also had a superb meal at The Cross Keys in Hamsterley. The Coach house is just lovely, super comfy beds with what looks to be brand new bed linen. Kitchen well equipped, welcome pack a nice touch. My only niggle is the heating - it is understandably on a controlled timer but given the damp weather we stayed in more than we would usually and it was cold during the afternoons. Bath towels were super small - have mentioned to cleaning company. All in all it was just lovely, looking forward to coming back with my hubby, kids and Hugo the King Charles Cav.

It is a very comfy place to stay even with missing touches due to Covid .. empty bookshelves and cushions made us realise how much more cozy it would usually be. There were small hiccups in kitchen requirements but we managed easily to cook everyday. Some items could do with replacement or cleaning, eg table mats and carpet, but we appreciate it is a pet friendly accommodation. There was nothing to wash up with at the kitchen sink apart from washing up liquid - we needed a brush or sponge or just something and went out to buy. There was no kitchen cloth to wipe surfaces. There was no liner in the General waste bin. 3 light bulbs were not working, one being the bedroom. The Coach House is spacious; as described, comfortable, with very good facilities - a well executed conversion and renovation. Lots of walks radiate from the village; Tees Railway Path, Tees-side Way and numerous others based on public footpaths. There's a distinct contrast between the two pubs in the village; you pays your money and you takes your choice ... literally. The Rose & Crown is a good example of an inn with food, comfy but costly; The Kirk, on the other hand, is an old-school local, hidden in plain sight ... a breath of fresh(ish) air. In a market dominated by artfully contrived ambience, The Kirk offers the real thing; a pile of logs for the fire, a dose of random furniture, a couple of dogs and a landlord who's happy to share wise words and hospitality with anyone who comes through the door - one evening that was nobody, another, there were a dozen or more, all engaged in lively conversation; just brilliant! We had a great time, despite some pretty mixed weather; snow and ice, brilliant sunshine, lashing rain, gale-force winds. Always a warm welcome awaits back at The Coach House.
