“You'd struggle to beat the view from Cowlings.”

Simply stunning. The house was wonderfully cosy during our very chilly November stay. However it is misleading to say the bathroom and bedrooms are on the 1st floor. Technically they are but you have to go down ten very uneven stone stairs from the bedroom and then back up a further five steps to reach the bathroom. Far from idea for anyone with dodgy knees or young children in the middle of the night! A very steep step into the house was very slippery in the rain. My husband slipped twice and ...

Technically they are but you have to go down ten very uneven stone stairs from the bedroom and then back up a further five steps to reach the bathroom. Far from idea for anyone with dodgy knees or young children in the middle of the night! A very steep step into the house was very slippery in the rain. My husband slipped twice and the door mat was useless at preventing wet muddy footprints coming into the hall.... however we loved our stay.

The property

Nestled along the banks of the River Swale and set within the luscious green countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, is this charming stone-built Grade II listed cottage.

Holding much of its original character, Cowlings is elevated by ceiling beams, with exposed brickwork and timber flooring allowing you to relax and unwind in a traditional-style setting.

It is the perfect dwelling for families and friends to come together and experience some of the best walking country of the area as well as an assortment of attractions to fill your time.

On the first floor is a bathroom, where you can recover from a long country walk with a soak in a warm bubble bath.

There is also a shower over the bath tub, ideal for waking you up and getting you ready in the morning.

Also on the first floor are two bedrooms - a king-size double with single bed, and separate to this is a twin bedroom.

Spend your down time in the lounge and warm your feet by the woodburner set in the minster fireplace, tune into the TV or listen to your favourite playlists via the Bluetooth speakers.

Gather around the dining table in the farmhouse-style kitchen and enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal together, prepared lovingly with all the essential appliances.

Take in the fabulous views from the mullion-style, living room window or step out onto the patio with a glass of wine and continue to drink in the pleasant surroundings.

Close by you have the local pub, with the nearest shop around 3 miles away.

Pay a visit to the town of Barnard Castle nearby, with the grand Bowes Museum housing some curious artifacts, the abandoned Egglestone Abbey, as well as its centrally located castle and the enchanting Raby Castle on the outskirts.

You also have the large market town of Darlington, Kirkby Stephen and the stunning Nidderdale AONB offering wild, open moorland, within easy reach.

Choose to holiday with your loved ones at this elegant property with a glorious backdrop.

About the location

LOW ROW

Reeth 3 miles; Hawes 13 miles.

A hillside scattering of traditional farms and cottages make up the pretty village of Low Row situated to the north of the River Swale. A delightful area with magnificent countryside and stunning views of the valley and surrounding fells. The village of Reeth just a short drive away dates back to Saxon times and became of sufficient size and importance to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. Later it became a centre for hand-knitting and local lead mining. Its eighteenth-century houses and hotel clustered around the triangular village green make it one of the very popular Dales villages. Askrigg better known to millions as Darrowby in TV's James Herriot's "All Creatures Great and Small" is just a short drive away as well as Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force (England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft).
