The house was immaculate with a very well equipped kitchen. The views are beautiful and the dog/kids loved playing in the paddock. We were warmly welcomed by Angela who was on hand throughout our stay, yet everything went so well. We would certainly return and recommend to others.

However not quite the level of luxury we were hoping for given the expense. The lack of soap, shampoo etc from the bathrooms was surprising and disappointing. Happy with the free cake but the lack of coffee pods was a real shame, especially as the local shop didn't stock them. At least leave a few to keep everyone going until we go to a supermarket.

The property was amazing just like previous reviews had stated. It was clean and tidy and had everything that you needed for a weekend break. We took our dogs and the paddock was perfect for the pooches to stretch their legs. We also found recommended walks in a folder which we tried and enjoyed then relax in the hot tub was needed. Thank you Angela who maintained the property during our stay. We will definitely be retuning soon.

Very clean, tidy and well looked after. Housekeeper Angela very friendly and helpful. There were 7 of us including 2 teenage boys who loved playing football in the paddock. Beautiful and spacious garden with views to die for! No proper hanging space in 2 upstairs bedrooms which was a bit awkward. Really recommend this gorgeous house to anyone looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

  • "The property was absolutely stunning and matched every picture on the site, its was incredibly clean and stocked with all the normal things you'd expect plus a well stocked kitchen that had plenty of pans, cutlery, cocktail jugs."

The views are incredible and every day we saw various birds, rabbits and hares around the surrounding fields which just made it a really special experience waking up each morning, or when sitting in the hot tub and watching the sun set. As well as all the lovely walks in the area that was quite a but to see and do if youre willing to drive. Barnard Castle was just a 15min drive away, as was High Force waterfall. If your up for a longer drive you a can do a day trip to either York or Whitby which take about 1hr 20mins, both of which we did. All of this was amazing but the one thing that really made this trip was Angela the host; She was there waiting for us when we arrived and was immediately made us feel at home with her big smiles and easy going personality, she had us laughing from the get go. She showed us everything we needed to know and was always available on text if we needed anything, twice on the holiday I messaged her, one of which was after 9pm, and both times she replied immediately despite this not being her full time job. She has by far been the best host ive ever dealt with and I hope she's still there when I come back, as I will definitely be coming back!

  • "Amazing accommodation for family Christmas get together."

Bell House Barn was everything we expected and more. From the minute we arrived we were greeted with a warm, friendly welcome from Angela who ran us through all the ins and outs of the house and its facilities. A lovely welcome pack with prosecco, fresh bread, chocolates, Yule log, truffle, coffee as well as milk in the fridge got us off to a good start before our shopping arrived later that evening. It was also nice to have a Christmas tree and some festive decorations too. The house itself had everything we needed for 8 adults, a one year old and a dog. Big comfy sofa (too comfy for some as it was difficult to get out of). Kitchen was ideal with plenty seating, TV, sound system and enough dishes for home made meals. Extra toilet off the kitchen with washing machine was a bonus in addition to the two bathrooms. Bedrooms were all comfortable and nicely decorated. Underfloor heating kept the property warm and cosy and each room could be individually heated to your desired temperature although we really didn’t need to change it. The hot tub was a bonus and even in December was lovely sitting in there looking at the stars. The paddock at the side of the house was brilliant for the dog she loved going out there for a run and every time we opened the back door she ran right to the gate ready for her run about. Nice to have some treats and a toy and ball left for her too she loved the squeaky bone (thank you). Surrounding Area A short 4 min drive to the village of Staindrop which was lovely, nice for a wee walk. There you will find a pub, Spar shop, newsagent, butcher and coffee shop (which unfortunately was closed due to it being Christmas). Barnard Castle is about 10 mins in the car and lots of little quaint gift shops and places to eat. Can recommend Penny’s for coffee and cake, The Three Horseshoes for lunch or dinner. Lovely walk around Flatts Wood. Mainsgill Farm Shop (20 mins drive) is well worth a visit wish we had found it sooner. Lovely café, plenty in the gift shop, homewear, clothing, food etc. Outside play area although was squelching with mud when we were there. Lots of animals for the kids. Overall we had a fantastic stay here over Christmas and will be recommending to family and friends.

The setting is idyllic so peaceful and stunning views. The hot tub was very clean and the whole family thoroughly enjoyed it. The extra paddock area was fantastic for our dog and she loved chasing the kids around it. We did sadly have an issue with a wasps nest in the main garden so was unable to use it to its full potential but Angela and the owner were trying to rectify this it didn’t bother us in the hot tub, but we had to keep the doors from the house to the garden closed. We used the charcoal bbq but unfortunately the previous people who used it had not cleaned it after use nor had they the coffee machine, so we did have to clean a few bits before use. However the rest of the property was spotless the bedding towels and soft furnishings are of very high quality (as are the beds… so comfy) The couple of issues mentioned above were sorted quickly and it would not stop us booking Bell house barn again, it’s absolutely stunning the pictures don’t really do it justice.

  • "A beautiful house in an idyllic setting, this should have been the perfect family setting for some relaxation and tranquility."

Due to visiting friends in York prior to our stay, we made an early request directly to extend our stay and arrive on the Sunday to avoid a hotel stay. This was agreed without any issues for an additional cost, sadly we now wish we had just booked a hotel. We arrived to a beautiful house, with a thoughtful welcome basket. However, we then had a really uncomfortable couple of days as the house had obviously not been occupied prior to our arrival and had not been prepared. We arrived with our two young children on a cold stormy afternoon, it was bitterly cold, there was very little hot water and were told the hot tub would not be ready until the Monday as it wasn’t up to temperature. We contacted Angela who was helpful and came out to the property, and bought some electric heaters. We spent two nights remaining cold under extra throws and blankets, and could not have a bath until Tuesday evening (2 days after arrival) as the bathrooms were so cold. From then on the property warmed up )though be warned the upstairs rooms were still not warm), we had hot water and our stay was more comfortable - however, when you pay £1200 for 5 night stay, this is not the standard to expect. There was little attention to detail - no dishwasher tablets, no spare toilet roll so we had to go and buy these, and there were lovely candle holders by the bath but empty tea lights. The property is isolated up a long drive and we were not informed of any visitors, so imagine our surprise when in the space of two days a window cleaner, and a gardener arrived! Neither of which knocked out of courtesy to let us know who they were or why they were there, fortunately my husband warned me that the window cleaner was by our bedroom window before I stood by the window unclothed after a shower or this would have been mortifying. These property upkeeping visits should bot be done when people are letting out the house, I strongly advise in future they are done on change over days or with prior consent, particularly given the property is so isolated - we had no idea who these men were at first, and it left us unsettled. On reading reviews, this may not be a common experience- but unfortunately the poor preparation of the property had a big impact on the comfort of our stay and did not reflect the cost of our stay by far. The property itself is generally well cared for and clean, the outside gated field is perfect for children and dogs. Can I please strongly recommend a tumble dryer be purchased!! For such a high tech, well equipped house - this is lacking, with extra loads of washing due to unwell children and hot tub use- drying clothes in cold wet windy weather was an absolute nightmare!

Bell House Barn is a unique luxury barn conversion in an idyllic setting where we try and do our upmost to make it both a pleasant enjoyable and memorable stay, on this occasion not the way we wanted but the amount of returning guests and positive feedback we do receive makes us strive ever harder. I am so pleased that the welcome pack hit the spot, as we understand that some of our guests travel a lot of miles to get to the Bell House Barn and we want them to enjoy every minute. I am sorry to hear you had a negative experience but bearing in mind you turned up in gale force winds at the height Storm Denis, after speaking to the housekeeper the house was totally prepared for yourselves. There had been other guest who had just left earlier that same day with no heating or hot water problems whatsoever, and other guests are now in there with no problems with either. It was a real shame that your children were ill on the first evening though I know Angela ran about bringing you fresh bedding and towels taking the others away, as well as bringing heaters to try to make your stay more comfortable and was always happy to offer any assistance where possible. After reading the exchanged messages there seemed little problem and you being ever so thankful. I can only assume you are not familiar with an air source heating system and how it works, the whole ground floor is underfloor heating , each room with a thermostat which are all adjustable, bedrooms set at 17degrees a comfortable sleeping temperature bearing in mind there is also bedspreads and throw throughout the home and the other rooms downstairs are all set at 21 degrees, the upstairs bedrooms have oversized radiators which never get hot to touch not like gas central heating but there are more than adequate for those rooms. I have read the text messages between you and the housekeeper, she did bring you more heaters up as soon as she could, and checked all the thermostats that day, which she adjusted only slightly. The hot water it is set to run 24hrs so there should always be hot water, plus you were shown where the hot water boost button is on arrival if ever needed, as there is two oversized luxury baths and if both are used there may be a short fall in hot water or if you are all showering before a big night out if there is 8 of you but hasn’t happened before now, As for the hot tub not being ready, it was emptied and deep cleaned prior to your arrival as with every change over day and yes unfortunately it takes time even more so in those stormy conditions to reach operating temperature again. There are toilet rolls left in every toilet with a spare ones in the cupboard. Sorry you don’t feel this is enough. Dishwasher tablets are always supplied. The tealights were placed there by other guests and we left them more for decoration purposes, we don’t provide the tealights as they could potential prove to be a fire risk. The window cleaners are instructed only to clean the windows on a changeover days but the weather doesn’t always allow this to happen but granted they should have made their presence known. There job is difficult at this time of year. As for the gardener that’s my fault, I had requested that he plant lots of snowdrops for me for the guest to enjoy but unfortunately trans planted plants need replanting immediately or so I’m told, sorry. I take on board about your comments about the drying of towels at this time of year of year and I will endeavour to find a place for a dryer or supply more towels. Property Owner

  • "We came for work (so not for a holiday) but wanted to share a cottage for a week."

We were overwhelmed by the size of that luxurious accomodation - it is really spacious and very well-equipped: E.g.a bean-to-cup coffee machine, and the kitchen is so big that the coffee is almost cold when you reach the fridge. The living room has a very big and comfy sofa, and all bedrooms are comfortably furnished, the duvets warm and cosy. There is an extra dining room and a sitting area in the kitchen as well apart from barstools. We carried the coffee table from the kitchen into the living room as there was none (might be good to have one there too). We enjoyed the drive up to the house - there are bushes and lamps all along, and it feels like returning to a stately home. A very friendly caretaker met us there and showed us everything. The cottage is just outside Staindrop which itself is worth a visit. You can easily reach Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle, Durham etc. but you will need a car. Of course, there is lots of space for parking it. The surroundings are beautiful, we had rainbows directly above the drive. Do not hesitate to book it; my experience with Sykes is that all cottages are even better than you might think from the website. I have not been disappointed so far!
