  • "We found the the heating hard to control, it was either on full or off, no thermostats on the radiators."

Also an independent over the kitchen area would be good rather than have all the lights on. We found it well equipped and comfortable though and a lovely area.

It's a warm, cosy hide-away where you can chill continuously or go and explore the stunning surrounding countryside, after which you return to the property to continue chilling. Great walks on the doorstep so you could have a vehicle-free holiday. All in all, the perfect get-away for two.

  • "A nice cottage."

Quiet setting. Wasn't made aware another cottage was adjacent with them walking past, but no real issue other than caused the dog to bark. Could have done with 2 sofas as the seating area was a bit formal. Kitchen equipment needs a bit of inventory. No kitchen knife to chop or prepare food, just a bread carving knife. Also no decent sized casserole dish . When raining a constant and repetitive noise (similar to someone banging a saucepan with a spoon) and guttering overflowing at front if bedroom window, both disrupted sleep one night, so would suggest a maintenance review to see if gutters blocked or if something was loose on roof (rear if cottage behind bedroom). Otherwise pleasant stay. For us, there was nothing nearby, no pubs open for a meal drink without driving some considerable distance. No phone signal at all.

The accommodation suited us just fine and the owners were pleasant, unobtrusive and helpful. The walks through the woods, being on the doorstep were wonderful for us and our dog. The only suggestion that I would make is that all your accommodation should include a basic first aid kit. My husband fell and cut his arm and luckily I had brought a kit with me. Without this I would have struggled.

It's well equipped and we had everything what we needed. The bath tub is perfect and it was great to have relaxing bath after busy day. The bed is big and very comfortable. We managed to see High Force Waterfall and stayed there for dinner. We visited Durham Cathedral and also spent a day on the sea side in Crimdon Beach, which is dog friendly all year round. By accident we were accommodated in the Piggery (cottage next door) but through the panoramic window we could see the bunnies eating the grass and a squirrel stealing the strawberries - yes, we had a great time! Thank you!

We have been visiting Sykes cottages for over 20 years and this is definitely one of our favourites. Comfy, warm, lovely location. There are woods for the dogs to run in, although ours is too old for that now but he enjoyed his little outings sniffing the rabbits. The cottage was well appointed and laid out. The sofa was a lovely surprise. So comfy! Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland are lovely places to visit and Durham is only half an hour away. We would love to visit again in Bluebell season.

Everything comfortable, clean and warm! The milk and wine in the fridge on arrival was a lovely touch and made us feel very welcome. Perfect little break and a great price. Listing is inaccurate. My child has just turned 2 and according to the listing wouldn't have been allowed. I asked about booking again with her age and she said it was fine! She is happy for the people to bring a camp bed so children (probably just the one) would be fine. The property also has wifi for anyone put off by lack of wifi - though there is no phone signal you can make calls online. The wifi is really strong and we didnt have a problem with it.

Thank you for your feedback, we're glad to see that you enjoyed Leadmill House Workshop. The listing for the property is accurate, the property can sleep 2 in the double bed, and the property allows an infant to use the cot. Fortunately the owner can supply a camp bed. As listed the property does have WiFi, we're glad that you had no issues with the amenities and would love to have you back. Property Owner

We took our toddler with us and Jon and Amanda were very kind to set up a travel cot and highchair so we didn't have to bring that with us. They went the extra mile when I asked if they had an extra fridge/freezer as we were staying to attend my best friend's wedding and I was making the cake. The wine and bubble bath was a nice touch too and very appreciated after a long drive. Only things I would change is maybe some new pillows as they were rather flat and a better vaccum. I tried to vaccum the rug (it had quite a bit of dog hair on it, as did the sofa) and it had very little suction. I understand it's a dog friendly cottage so I was expecting a bit of dog hair but not to the point that my tights were covered just from sitting on the rug to play with my son. Overall a very pleasant stay, family and friends came to visit and thought it was a gem of a find too. We loved the little guide book they had made and all the leaflets from local attractions really helped us get around especially since the cottage is a black spot for phone signal and data so you can't just Google things.

The property

Barnard Castle 6.2 miles.

An attractive, detached stone cottage set in a quiet, rural enclave within upper Teesdale, on the outskirts of the small village of Copley, 6 miles from Barnard Castle.

This Barnard Castle cottage was a former lead mill workshop and lies next door to the owner's home within sight of the original lead mill chimney; a local land mark.

Long since landscaped and afforested, this Barnard Castle cottage lies in a small valley with public footpaths leading away from the door and into the beautiful surrounding countryside.

With wooden flooring and a pitched roof with original beams, this Barnard Castle cottage has been finished to a good standard and has an open plan living area with a contemporary kitchen, dining area and sitting area.

French doors lead to a front patio with pretty views of the countryside and the small wooded valley; an ideal spot to enjoy a drink and plan the next day's activities.

The local shop and pub are both just one mile away and Hamsterley Forest is also nearby, with lots of opportunities for cycling, hiking and touring in this beautifully scenic district, which include the deer park at nearby Raby Castle and the waterfalls at High Force and Cauldron Snout.

The market town of Barnard Castle with cobbled streets and the Bowes Museum is nearby, plus a short drive brings you into the heart of Durham, with its majestic cathedral standing high above the River Wear.

This Barnard Castle cottage offers a unique, romantic holiday experience for a couple wanting to enjoy the beautiful countryside of the northern Dales.

BARNARD CASTLE

Staindrop 6 miles; Richmond 13 miles; Darlington 16 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep of this lovely market town, with woodland walks and cycle routes and the Lake District, the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, and the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach.
