  • "A welcoming little cottage right in the centre of a lovely village, ideal for visiting our family nearby over the Christmas holiday."

It was full of period character, yet very well equipped and with all necessary mod cons. The Christmas decorations and Welcome Treats were a lovely touch and much appreciated. We would certainly like to stay there again.

so very happy we always try to do our best and your appreciation is very welcome indeed. Hope to see you again Many thanks happy new year to you and yours Property Owner

  • "The overriding issue was that Sykes added an extra £140 on the original booking when we had to defer the holiday due to unforeseen circumstances which meant that Hawthorn Cottage was overpriced for the accommodation on offer."

The “free parking” was on the opposite side of a busy main road and it wasn’t always possible to park close to the property. Transferring suitcases became a challenge to say the least. The cottage itself was clean and tidy but very small and the lack of privacy both in the front room and the backyard could have been improved upon. The provision of logs for the burner was welcome but a set of saucepans and a bread knife would have been even more so. The packet of biscuits as a welcome pack was pleasant but to be honest, after a long drive, a small bottle of milk plus some teabags would have been more useful. Judging from the comments of other guests in the visitors book, we are in the minority but based on our experiences of many other holiday rentals Hawthorn Cottage was disappointing, sadly; especially in view of the overall cost of the holiday.

I am disappointed that you have chosen to misrepresent my property in this way. Your criticisms are totally unfounded. Could you be confusing my cottage with one of the.many others you have stayed in. Property Owner

The property

Hawthorne cottage is centrally situated in the traditional village of Cotherstone in beautiful Teesdale, and within easy reach of both the North Pennines area of outstanding natural beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, an ideal base for a family or couple.

Like the rest of the village it is constructed of stone and slate and behind the red door it has been completely renovated to a high standard, but retaining many of the original features.

You will be greeted by a warm and welcoming sitting room where you can relax and watch programmes of your choice on the smart television.

Continue through to the dining room with its stone flagged floor and Inglenook fireplace, where you can curl up in a comfortable armchair in front of the log burning stove.

Beyond is a modern fully equipped kitchen with patio doors leading into the sun trap garden.

The ground floor shower room sports a large shower enclosure with plenty of elbow room.

The stairs lead from the corner of the dining room up to 2 charmingly furnished and decorated bedrooms, a double and a twin with an upstairs shower room, again with roomy shower enclosure.

Once you have settled in you can plan your holiday, if you are walkers Cotherstone is situated in the network of footpath’s extending over the whole Dale and the Tees Valley Railway walk goes from Barnard Castle to Middleton in Teesdale.

Further afield is the Pennine Way and the Durham Heritage Coast and Lake District are only an hours drive away ( in opposite directions obviously).

Barnard Castle has of course the castle, a great range of shops especially antique shops and don’t miss it’s Piece de resistance, the wonderful Bowes Museum with exhibits to interest all ages.

Raby Castle is one of the finest medieval castles in England, still occupied by Lord and Lady Barnard and where you can take a fascinating tour and enjoy the restaurant and Deer park.
