  • "A lovely large house and garden."

Generous owners left lovely welcome basket of local products. Lots of space for us all and everything we needed was provided within the cottage. A short drive from Richmond and host provided parking permit so parking was easy. Enjoyable walk to Richmond too.

  • "Where do I start?"

Easby was a home from home. We walked in and the atmosphere was there from the beginning. The welcome pack and our provisions enabled the first cuppa and biscuit. Personally enjoyed using the AGA type cooker. Everything the owner told us to do eg bin day was accurate. In brief the stay was an education (a library of interest) a visual beauty, a warm comfortable home. The area holds lots to do, and enables walking, be it muddy or lane walking. Definitely one to revisit!

  • "It is a lovely property, great location, great bird life."

Unfortunately there are some cleanliness issues. The kitchen surface had food waste left, and there were silver fish on surface. We had to move settee to find something and the dirt and debris was disgusting, obviously not been moved in a long long time. We have taken photographs would you wish to see them. There was also animal hair in one of the double beds that triggered an chest issue for my daughter.

Thank you for your comments which we will pass on to our cleaner. We do allow our guests to bring a dog with them on their holiday so there is always a risk of some contamination of the cottage with a little dog hair although we try our best to clean thoroughly after every let. We are sorry that your daughter was unwell but perhaps for her health you would be better to avoid cottages where dogs are allowed in future? The sofas that you mentioned are extremely heavy and don’t get moved on a regular basis so we will do that in future. We ourselves have never seen silver fish in the cottage but the kitchen marble surface has a silver patina so might be a source of confusion? Easby Cottage is a large, nearly 300 year old property with an immaculate enclosed private garden and we endeavour to make it a welcoming environment for our guests. Property Owner

  • "A beautiful and deceptively large cottage near the Abbey."

The house was equipped to a high standard with everything you could possibly need! A welcome pack was gratefully received and full of treats! The beds were comfortable and all the linens were of a high quality. It is very near to Richmond and an easy walk into town. One of the reasons I chose the house was a downstairs bedroom for an older person but it was too far to the down stairs toilet and there were several steps to negotiate during the night!

The location is very special, we loved having Easby Abbey on our doorstep and easy access to so many glorious walks and things to do. Graham was charming and helpful with his suggestions. • "We had a wonderful week at Easby Cottage!"

We were a party of 5 from Ottawa, Canada and Seattle, USA). This historic and tasteful property is a spacious 'home from home', with abundant modern conveniences and a large, beautiful and peaceful garden (we made use of the croquet set!) Thank you very much to the owners for the welcome items they provided in the kitchen, and also the advice of where to go in the local area. It was lovely to meet you! We loved Easby cottage because of its location: just steps to Easby Abbey, the river, and fields of sheep! Plus there were 3 different 20 minute-or-so walking routes into Richmond town centre (two via footpaths/bridleways, and one via the B road which has a pavement for pedestrians; the latter being the flattest route to the market square). One of our party ran also ran from the cottage up to Catterick via the cycleway. Two of us used the Richmond combined heritage ticket to visit the historic theatre, and the interesting and bigger-than-you-think local history museum; and we all had fun at Richmond castle (nice activities for the 9 year old in our party-her first castle!) Some of us like exploring the local byways so we walked up to the old race course common land above the town-great views (and marvelous for anyone with a dog!) Groceries we got locally in Richmond, or for greater variety at the vibrant Tesco superstore hub in Catterick. Further afield between us we went to York by train (from Darlington); Fountains Abbey and associated rare, historic gardens; Middleham Castle and pubs; Leyburn children's playground (great equipment for our 9 year old, plus picnic tables and wonderful views of Wensleydale.) We also drove to East Witton one day and took public footpaths with stepping stones across the River Ure to Middleham and back. Easby Cottage makes a perfect base for exploring this culturally rich and special area of Yorkshire, but is also perfectly relaxing for just hanging-out in! Very happy!

Thank you for your lovely comments and we are so glad you had a wonderful holiday in North Yorkshire! We hope you had a good journey home to Canada and the US Jane and Graham Property Owner

Easby Cottage is evidently a much-loved family home and it feels welcoming from the moment you arrive. From the grand and luxurious surroundings of the living room to the terrifically equipped and homely kitchen/dining area. There isn't a single thing we could fault or would wish to be changed. We visited in autumn when the well-tended garden still looks full of life and interest and surrounding mature trees turning to wonderful, rich shades. We imagine that Easby Cottage is a delight at any season and we hope to return many times!

Beautiful garden-well maintained. Village of Easby has all the charm of a Dales village, with the added attraction of the wonderful ruins of the Abbey a short walk away-not forgetting the medieval church of St. Agatha, with it's restored wall paintings. Richmond town was a revelation and only a 1.5 mile walk away. No shop in Easby, but lots of shops (many independent) in Richmond to chose from. The cottage had all facilities we needed and there is nothing else I would want to be added. The welcome pack was an added bonus. The owners provide extensive information and maps about the area.

Only comment is that I felt that although I can accept a freezer in the utility room I felt that the fridge should have been in the pantry but on the positive side I managed to get my steps in going for the milk !!

Hello Linda We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Easby is a lovely spot. It is our first season and we are pleased to get advice/suggestions from guests. I will be getting a fridge for the pantry on my return from the USA to save the walk to the utility room for milk. Jane, my partner, feels the same as you! • "This is a BEAUTIFUL cottage with a glorious garden in fabulous surroundings."

We really enjoyed our stay. Knowing that feedback is important and notwithstanding the above there are a couple of points. I wonder if it can be made known to potential guests that the quirkiness of the cottage means that the ground floor is not level throughout. There is only mention of the steps for the upstairs twin room but at night from the ground floor bedroom in order to access the downstairs toilet one must pass through 5 rooms on 3 different levels...they are only single steps but they caught us out on more than one occasion and our youngster also tripped on the shallow steps. A family with elderly relatives may think that a downstairs bedroom with a downstairs toilet would present no challenges but I think this might. The kitchen equipment was fabulous and plentiful (wondered whether the fridge freezer could be moved to replace the shelving in the pantry so that it is more accessible as it is currently quite some distance away from the working area in the kitchen) We hit the record temperature week (!) and noticed that we couldn't open the french doors in the main lounge and the rod for opening the various Velux windows was a challenge that we couldn't master but the ultra thick walls of the property served us well in the heat. Special thanks to Jack for his understanding. It definitely feels like a 'home' and our 3 generation family thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our comments are observations- not criticism or complaint.

Thank you for your very helpful comments. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Easby, despite the very hot weather. We will see what further improvements we can make based on your suggestions. It is our first season renting out the property and we are still on a learning curve. Property Owner

The cottage is very spacious and comfortable with lots of lovely things. The kitchen was very well equipped, the beds were comfortable and the shower in the upstairs main bathroom was very good (we didn’t use the ensuite). The welcome pack was very generous and well received and there was even a bag of treats for our dog. Unlike some cottages there were plenty of additional heaters in case it was chilly, which it wasn’t, and there was also a good supply of extra towels which was appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed the cottage, both inside and out and the short walk down to the Abbey was very pleasant. We would definitely stay there again and would recommend.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. The main thing, however, is that you enjoyed your stay. We shared the feedback with our house manager because she has done/is doing all the hard work to prepare for guests while we are away on holiday. We are also pleased that you share our love of the cottage, its setting and the location. Property Owner

I would definitely consider going again, the situ is perfect. being ideal country living yet perfectly positioned to visit many parts of the dales and surrounding areas. Comfortable and very spacious, (huge rooms, but very cosy) could not praise this property high enough and am already seeing if i can get back in the winter. Richmond is but a 1.5 mile stroll away on more or less a flat path passing the Abby ruins and a walkway popular with locals, those who do not wish to drive all the time, will find a very efficient taxi service (£6 to local pub or town anytime). Immaculate throughout. Friendly and helpful neighbours who came in to check on us when we had a brief power outage, but otherwise we were unaware of them. It is a cottage that everyone who ever wanted a country cottage would want to own, presented in first class condition, with every detail, including hairdryers and bowls for 4 legged friend being thought of. Was reluctant to give highest praise, in case i could not get in again, but credit where it is due, top marks all round.

Thank you so much, for your positive feedback. We are delighted that you and your family had such a good stay. We also agree that we have very helpful neighbours. I have passed on your comments to them. the bin needs replacing!! there was dust and dirt in every corner and on all beams. I only opened the oven door once and closed it - needs a deep clean. It was a real shame as the cottage is in a beautiful setting and the garden was immaculate. The owners have really nice things in there home, but it needs to be cleared out if it is going to be a rental property (beautiful china and accumulated kitchen clutter needs to go). I am really sorry to complain like this but with a few adjustments this could be an idyllic spot to discover the dales. we did enjoy our holiday get together with the family . We took photos of the faults if the owner would like them. Ann wright.

Very homely. It was lovely to have the opportunity to stay in a well loved home. Lots of books, games and OS maps plus parking passes for the local town provided together with good housekeeping instructions. We knew before we arrived that there was an issue with the heating system but there was ample coal and logs to use on a lovely open fire. Hot water supplied by immersion heater so again no significant problem. The plumber came whilst we were there but could not complete the repair. However the only room that was really cold was the bedroom off the sitting room. The welcome pack was exceptional. We all enjoyed our stay at Easby Cottage. Thank you.

We're very pleased that you enjoyed your stay, despite the unexpected, last minute problem with the central heating pump. The heating engineer has now been back to complete the repairs, such that the radiators in all the rooms are once again working. Property Owner

About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
