• "Another very relaxing and comfortable stay."

  The cottage was just as we remembered it, although the weather wasn’t as kind to us. The indoor games room and wonderful hot tub kept us entertained. Martyn was available and on hand when needed. We loved listening to the birdsong all day and watching the wildlife. A wonderful, memorable & relaxing holiday with my family. A big thank you to Martyn, you are a great host and you know how much we love your property and we’d love to return.

• "Fabulous location and great facilities."

  Comfortable beds and very well equipped kitchen. We thought the 9.30 am check out was very early…. We spent our last evening preparing for check out rather than completely relaxing and enjoying our last night. Having to get up at 7.30 am on our holiday to be out by 9.30 am seemed a little harsh. A later check in to enable cleaning time would be preferable. Other than that, we had an amazing time and Martyn couldn’t have been more helpful.

• "We had a lovely stay we did have a hiccup with the heating but was sorted asap we also got a lovely gesture to say sorry."

  It's a very peaceful place lovely and quite our son and dogs had a blast in all that open space. Only a short drive back to the village which has some nice shops and a morrisons. We will definitely return but pick a month where we might nit have as much rain. Fantastic weekend eating nice meals and relaxing in the hot tub. The welcome prosecco was a lovely touch also

  The property was so well equipped and we needed for nothing. The party all really enjoyed themselves and the kids thought the play area and games room were fab. We had a great dark skies one night we enjoyed in the hot tub. So many great places to go off and visit from the location. We’ll definitely return.

• "The accomodation was just perfect, and is obviously well cared for by Martyn."

  Cleanliness and comfort top notch. With a high spec finish. The Old Byres location and surrounding scenery is beautiful. Weather was pretty dire, but the games room kept us all amused! The welcome pack was greatly appreciated. Martin was reassuringly at the end of a phone if needed, but was never intrusive. We would not hesitate to book again.

• "We had a fantastic week at the cottage definitely our favourite UK property we have stayed in as everything was such high quality."

  The cottage is beautiful and comfortable and has everything and more you would ever need! Martyn was very accommodating with our plans to celebrate a special birthday. Good location to get out and about but we had lots of snow which was just amazing so we stayed in one day and made the most of the fab games room, lush hot tub and had fun in the snow! so a totally relaxing weekend! • "We went here for a family holiday and loved the out of the way location."

  The cottage is not far from some nice walks and High Force waterfall. You can either walk from the cottage or get in the car for a short distance to access these depending on your ability. We had one very rainy day whilst here and made the most of the games room which was great for both us and the kids. The pool table could do with a little tlc but was usable and was probably just more noticeable given the standard of the rest of the property. The cottage is done to a high standard and very comfortable. The hot tub was particularly great after a long walk! Overall we would definitely love to come back again.

• "The Old Byre is a beautiful property, it’s setting is fantastic."

  The property was clean and well decorated, the beds were extremely comfortable. The addition of the hot tub made it extra special looking out at the beautiful surroundings. It had everything you needed for a great holiday . I have just one suggestion , it would be nice to have a heated towel rail as because it is underfloor heating you have no where to dry your towels . We didn’t want to put them in the dryer with them not being washed as we wouldn’t know which towel ours was and would be wasteful to do one at a time and also very time consuming.

• "A lovely comfortable cottage with all the comforts of home."

  A well equipped kitchen and cosy lounge along with the underfloor heating to keep us crusty. The comfy super king-size beds provided us with a good night's sleep. Sitting in the hot tub admiring the stunning scenery was a bit hit. Communication from Martyn was excellent before, during and afterwards our stay. A much appreciated welcome basket including a drink of our choice along with fruit, milk tea and coffee etc was awaiting for us on arrival. All in all we had a fantastic week even though the weather wasn't too kind to us resulting to a few afternoons in the games room. Hope to go back real soon.

• "The property is outstanding."

  From the location to the outlook and the facilities to the cleanliness. Simply perfect. We had the best family week here. A few day trips out to the waterfalls, reservoirs and local towns followed by stint in the games room made for some perfect days. Sitting in the hot tub on an evening waiting for the bats & barn owls to fly by was just magical. Even the teenager was impressed by the stargazing and shooting star he spotted! Martyn was a perfect host. Very communicative and on hand if we needed anything. We cannot wait to return again. We’ve definitely found ‘our perfect place’. • "Had an amazing week at The Old Byre views were wonderful and the peace was exactly what we needed Cottage had everything you needed and more we were sad to leave."

  Grown children loved the pool table and hot tub that much we hardly seen them. Nothing was to much trouble for Martyn whenever i had to message him his main concern was us enjoying our stay a very kind man Thank you. We never got to see the log burner on in living room as it was too hot in cottage but i can imagine it would be very cosy in winter.

• "Had a great stay here - everything was as advertised if not better."

  The cottage was really clean and everything had been thought of from, hot tub, kitchen facilities to large TVs in each bedroom. To top it off there is a games room contained within the annex that we made great use of. The views are beautiful from the cottage and there are walks nearby. I would recommend going to see High Force. Our only suggestion to improve this cottage would be some form of cover for the hot tub so it can be enjoyed in all weathers however would not mark the stay down for this as it is a truly beautiful cottage/location which was ideal for us and our dog. The owners were extremely helpful and easy to contact and we’re always quick to response. Would highly recommend!

• "We had a lovely break at this wonderful cottage."

  I have stayed in numerous cottages across the uk and this one ticked all of the boxes. A couple of bonuses for us was the fact that it was the nicest and cleanest pet friendly cottage and I always look for 5 star cottages. Beautiful views and very secure had all of the mod cons and big tvs in all the bedrooms! Kitchen well equipped it even had a slow cooker! The only thing missing for us was a sun shade in the garden for those hot sunny days. Owner very helpful. Thank you again will definitely recommend to our friends.

• "The Old Brye cottage is a fantastic place to stay."

  It is spacious comfortable and like home from home. The cottage was very clean and had everything you need for a lovely holiday. The super kingsize beds were amazing so comfortable. My son and husband enjoyed the games room and the hot tub was an added bonus. The separate annexe was fab - it gave our son a holiday with family but with his own privacy. The garden is huge which our dog loved to explore and loved watching the rabbits. Martyn the owner was great - we had a lovely welcome text before we arrived and again on the day we arrived. Although we didn’t see Martyn during our holiday we knew if we needed him he was just a phone call away. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone wanting a beautiful cottage in a peaceful surrounding with Barnard Castle just a short drive away. We hope to holiday here again sometime.   Definitely up there as one of the best cottages we’ve stayed in. The location was spot on and we had a fab time exploring the area.The cottage itself was lovely throughout and had everything we needed. The views from the patio were beautiful which we enjoyed everyday given the gorgeous weather we had during our stay. Comms with the owner was also great during our stay, they checked in with us to make sure we were ok and we’re quick to respond to any questions we had. • "Weren't we lucky!"

  The "we" being three couples and long time friends from different parts of the country. The Old Byre was a marvellous place to meet up. The house was immaculate and our host always keen to please with attention to detail, as were Sykes. The weather was in our favour, sometimes hot, sometimes chilly, but always dry so we were able to make the most of the wide patio with the hot tub and wonderful views of Teesdale. The house is in a great place for exploring the area - Eggleston Hall Gardens, Raby Castle, Bowes Museum etc as well as the big outdoors on local walks and High & Low Force Waterfalls and the delightful Hannah Hauxwell's Meadow. (Practical suggestions - bedroom reading lights needed please. As mentioned in the Guest Book several times the towels were small for a prestigeous property, and only five seats in the lounge for six guests. Space limited but a comfortable folding seat maybe?)

• "Lovely secluded Cottage, with safe and secure grounds for children and pets."

  Facilities were of high quality and the hot tub was a pleasure. The games room was enjoyed but it did get a bit cold so some heating in there would have made the experience much better. Comfortable beds, and high end decor with laundry facilities was a great extra. We had issues with the oven throughout our stay but host tried their best to sort.

• "5 stars for an amazing place."

  Beautifully refurbished, beds are superb - I didn't want to get up! Hot tub is a great size and huge TVs in all rooms. Our dog loved exploring the garden. Everything has been thought of to make your stay comfortable and easy. From the huge fridge with ice/cold water, tons of crockery, Alexa, TV apps, cleaning supplies, toilet rolls and a lovely welcome pack. The views are wonderful and quiet. If we didn't leave, we wouldn't have seen a soul - perfect! Easy access to loads of places to visit. We have stayed in many self catering accommodation over the years but this is up there with the best for standard and comfort. Any questions quickly responded to by the owner. Highly recommended.

  We arrived to a welcome basket of Prosecco and chocolates and it was a lovely start to our stay. Having the hot tub and games room meant we didn’t have to venture out and we could stay and enjoy this lovely barn. We will definitely be coming back to visit.

• "Lovely property full of modern amenities."

  Underfloor heating is spot on, beds are comfy (although the fitted sheets didn't quite fit properly). Views from the property are lovely, and just a short drive from some really amazing waterfalls! No heater in the games room which was not ideal for winter. Very secluded with a lovely garden and hot tub. Would recommend!

Due to the large size of the games room , with it being a converted double garage it can be colder on winter nights. Unfortunately due to regulations and insurance we cant install a large heater by law. • "A New Year’s Eve to remember- The old Byre is simply beautiful, the views are spectacular."

  It felt like a home from home, as it was so well equipped. The beds were very comfortable, the mattresses were spotless. The house was warm, clean and comfortable. Martyn was a very attentive host and offered earlier checkin as soon as the property was ready. Everything felt so easy, all televisions were logged in to a range of apps. There was plenty of dishwasher tablets and toilet roll, and a welcome gift. The Old Byre is a lovely place to unwind. The only improvement would be later checkout, getting out for 9:30 was a mission! We will definitely return

• ""Fabulous " if we could have rated higher, we would have done."

  From contact with Martyn before our break away, we asked for some adjustments to be made in regards to our stay,and he was more than accommodating. When we arrived at the electric gates, and drove through, it was stunning, a little estate in its own grounds, 360 degree views of the stunning hills surround the cottage, wrapped around by lovely traditional stone walls, beautiful little beck ran down one side where sheep grazed on the other side of the trees. A double garage to park in front of, as the Fabulous games room lay behind the double electric doors, pool table, table tennis, dart board, huge TV and a beer fridge!

  Best we have stayed in in 20 years. Could not fault anything other than maybe a larger towel. No worries with the garden area for our dog as it was secure all around. Once again the hosts have created a great place to visit with fantastic views from the hot tub.

• "Wow. What to say about The Old Byre."

  .. An absolutely stunning property on every part. Set in a gorgeous rural area with friendly neighbour cows in the back, the grounds are gorgeous and well kept - loads of space for outdoor games or outdoor entertaining, plus a lovely little swing set for the kids which ours loved (age 9 and 7). The games room in the outbuilding is perfect with pool, ping ping and darts. The main house itself is really stunning, it has been decorated and set up with all your needs at the heart, there's really nothing missing. Top spec kitchen/diner with absolutely everything you need and I mean everything, plus a massive fridge freezer so loads of space for food and booze for the week. Both bedrooms in the main house are also gorgeous - perfect size with plenty of storage and space to get ready, both have smart tvs and lovely bathrooms - the freestanding bath was a big hit for us. And wow - the beds were massive and as comfy as clouds. The living room is lovely and snug equipped with a massive smart TV, log burner, blankets and stocked with family board games. My favourite part was the utility room - having a washer and dryer on holiday in the winter was a big hit haha. The 3rd bedroom was in the outbuilding and was equally gorgeous and considered, again with smart TV and absolutely stunning wetroom bathroom. Oh, and there's a beautiful big and fancy hot tub, which heats up super quick and has Bluetooth speakers. The owner left us a gorgeous welcome pack and was available to text at any point. They were very lovely and seemed to really care about us having a nice time, but absolutely left us to it and allowed us to enjoy the space as our own. Perfect hosts!! Overall: great value, amazing house with top spec facilities, spectacular scenery, great location and super host! Our week at the Old Byre could not have been any better. Thank you!

• "Martin, the host, was very attentive and always on hand if you needed him."

  He sent a video walk through of the property before arrival, which was a fantastic idea (the first time we have had this in all our years of renting holiday cottages). The cottage was just as beautiful as the photos. Everything available that you would require during your stay. The cottage is located well we feel, travelling to Windermere (90mins away) Seaham (60mins away) and Beamish is also not very far! Barnard castle is 10 minutes away in the car too. Middleton, similar, in the opposite direction. You really would not be disappointed by renting this property. We would love to go back!

  Stunning property and the hosts have thought of everything. A luxury home from home! We spent a lot of our time in the property , the hot tub and the games room. As a fairly new dog owner we have found it difficult to find properties that truly have a secure garden, despite website assurances. Our inquisitive black lab loved this garden and it was totally secure. She had great fun chasing her ball around and the rabbits !, Can’t wait to come back to this property, hopefully soon!

• "Thank you for a wonderful holiday!"

  The Old Byre is an amazing place to stay, the location is secluded and silent, the nearest property is 200+ meters away. The Byre has been exquisitely renovated and decorated, every detail has been carefully thought of making our stay faultless. From the welcoming messages from Martyn ahead of our journey here, to the lovely welcome pack, to the hot tub being ready for our arrival these gestures made our stay extra special. There is lots to visit in the area, we were lucky enough to catch the Eggleston Farm show, but also visited Eggleston Gardens, High & Low Force, Barnard Castle, Grassholme reservoir, Middleton and thoroughly enjoyed all. There is even an observatory at Grassholme reservoir, unfortunately we were thwarted by the weather. We are already booked for next year so better luck then.

• "We had a brilliant stay at The Old Byre."

  The property is spacious, beautifully decorated and has every thing you need and more. The attention to detail is obvious throughout and the owners are incredibly helpful and thoughtful, without encroaching on your privacy at all. The games area is an absolute treat, with pool, snooker, darts and table tennis; with that, the hot tub and the beautiful views, you really don't need to leave the cottage at all. That said, there are endless beautiful places to explore locally and sitting in the hot tub in the evening watching the stars was a perfect way to finish the day. I would 100% recommend and will be back soon!

• "Fantastic holiday home, well equipped to an extremely high standard of decor and furnishings."

  Games room a particularly welcome asset, my grandson and I enjoyed many a game of pool and table tennis. Maybe a couple of stools in there would be a good addition plus a mini fridge! The hot tub was fabulous for us all (except the baby)! My granddaughter made good use of the swings and loved the huge garden! Also the board games supplied and outdoor toys, very thoughtfully provided. The cooker and fridge freezer were a generous size with the ice-maker a welcome feature! During colder months the log burner would be well used, it was almost a shame it wasn't cold enough to use it! It was handy having so many bathrooms, especially when some of us went down with a sickness bug, plus the availability of washer and drier a godsend. I don't think we will ever find a better holiday home, we have been spoiled at The Old Byre and look forward to returning at some point in future. We greatly appreciated the owner's quick and helpful response to any query or problem experienced which was rectified even at the weekend. All in all we had an amazing family holiday here, one that we will remember for years to come, so thank you!

• "We went for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it the place is amazing nice and private in a fantastic setting."

This is the best by far we loved the the way the building is presented very clean inside and out with games room and hot tub with fantastic views. We are going to be going again we even asked if they wanted to sell it as this would be our dream home. 10 out 10 you will not be disappointed.

• "This is the best cottage we have stayed in."

  It's so well put together. They have thought of everything. The bedrooms and beds are so big and comfortable. The bedding is hotel quality. It's spacious and so comfortable. The kitchen is so well stocked and a dream to cook in - if you have too! The outside area is amazing with perfect views and the games room is great too! If it wasn't already booked for summer next year we would of booked again. So quiet and peaceful and away from everything. We walked to the pub which was the Moorcock inn. Great selection of drinks and really good food. We went to the pubs and restaurants in Middleton too, would recommend.

• "Lovely place and the owners have put a lot of thought into making sure everything is there for you."

  Lovely area but not much around, luckily we didn’t mind a drive to the Lakes most days for different scenery/ things to do. Very disabled friendly which was what I was looking to find for my father. Best pub in the area Fox hole about 20 mins drive away. Great food there, others locally not so great or not dog friendly. High force waterfall is not far away and a lovely day out. Would Definitely recommend

• "A very secluded and private property but with easy access to the surrounding villages."

  The cottage was immaculately clean and spacious with quality furniture and fittings throughout. Outside there is a large enclosed garden which our dog really enjoyed exploring and chasing, very unsuccessfully, the rabbits. A good-sized patio with furniture and hot tub has a lovely view across the Tees valley. Highly recommended, we have already booked for next year.
