I think it’s one of the best places you can wish for in Yorkshire (and we’ve seen a few really nice ones). Cross Beck provides a top notch location for both hiking and cycling. The cottage is a cosy haven to come back to in the afternoon. It has gorgeous views from the garden and bedrooms, it’s quiet, well-equipped, clean and comfy.

  • "Lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings with views over the dales."

Clean and well equipped property with comfortable beds. The garden is lovely and private with views of the surrounding fields with sheep and chickens. The location is very quiet. There are numerous footpaths all over the area to enjoy and the Swaledale Trail which is a cycle route goes through the village is good for walking or cycling. Lovely walks by the river in the village which has it's own pub and cycle hire place. The cottage owner is charming and was there to greet us. We would definitely return to the cottage.

There is every comfort you could wish for and the hosts are very obliging should you need them (we had a problem with hot water and heating but they got it sorted before we were back from our walk). Apart from the cottage itself there are some wonderful walks literally from the doorstep which was handy as we didn't have to drive anywhere during the fuel shortage. We cannot praise this cottage highly enough!

About the location

REETH

Leyburn 8 miles; Richmond 11 miles; Barnard Castle 15 miles; Kirkby Stephen 22 miles.

The pretty, ever-popular village of Reeth rests at the northern tip of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where Arkengarthdale and Swaledale meet, nestled between Calver Hill, Fremington Edge and Harkerside. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lovely rolling hills and spectacular views, Reeth boasts a colourful history as it was originally a Saxon settlement, and has also been known as a lead mining town and a centre for hand knitting throughout its time. Both trades are proudly featured in the Swaledale Museum, located alongside a good range of shops, tea rooms and restaurants. For a quaint little community, Reeth is well-served by traditional inns, with three to choose from, including the lovely Buck Hotel, whitewashed like so many of the 18th century cottages huddled around the triangular village green. The historic market towns of Richmond and Leyburn are also within easy reach, offering a further selection of amenities. Askrigg is just a short drive away, as well as Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force (England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft). Reeth offers a fantastic base for exploring North Yorkshire's beautiful, sweeping countryside, whether you choose to discover the caves, cliffs, waterfalls or the plethora of walking and cycling routes that circle this vibrant and varied landscape.
