About the location
Barnard Castle 6 miles ; Darlington 10 miles; Richmond 12 miles.
The village of Winston stands on the River Tees at the boundary with Yorkshire. Well maintained paths beside the river make it perfect for a romantic river walk, or even fishing and canoeing for the more adventurous. The village is famous for the single span bridge across the river, once regarded as the largest single span arch in Europe. It was once used in a film depicting the training of the dam buster pilots and a Second World War Spitfire was flown underneath the bridge in a daring stunt. Sturdy Winston Bridge had seen nothing like it in its 250-year history. The village itself has a well-maintained playing field, complete with children’s play area, tennis/basketball court and a small football pitch. It is also home to the Bridgewater Arms, formerly the old school house and now serving delicious pub food and fine restaurant dining.
Winston sits near to the quaint market town of Barnard Castle. Barnard Castle boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century and which house a variety of independent shops as well as larger retailers. It also has a leisure centre with swimming pool and gym facilities and the town also has its own golf course. The Castle walls overlook the town, which is also home to the resplendent Bowes Museum. The museum was built as an impressive French-style chateau to house a remarkable collection of fine and decorative art. The Silver Swan, the museums musical automaton made in 1773 is not to be missed!
Teesdale is home to an impressive array of attractions from the magnificent Raby Castle and Deer Park, the hidden secrets of Rokeby Hall, to the power of the Tees at High and Low Force and the Bowlees visitor centre.
Nearby, the large market town of Darlington which sits on the southern boundary of County Durham houses a wide range of restaurants, pubs and cafes, an active Civic Theatre, a Forum Music Centre, multiplex cinemas, leisure centre, plus lots of retail outlets, both indoor and outdoor, available at your fingertips.
The beautiful market town of Richmond is also easily accessible, having its own Castle, independent shops, pubs, cafes, theatre, a leisure centre and an intimate cinema housed in the old Station buildings.
To the North East, you enter the land of the Prince Bishop’s with the historic home, Auckland Castle at Bishop Auckland. This beautiful Palace is also the backdrop for ‘Kynren’ the spectacular live family outdoor show which takes you on a journey through 2,000 years of English history, myth and legend during the summer months. Then on to the city of Durham with its majestic Cathedral standing high above the River Wear, home of the shrine of St. Cuthbert.
To the south York, Harrogate and Ripon beckon, whilst the Yorkshire Dales National Park, North York Moors, Lake District, Northumberland National Park and the coastal towns of Whitby and Saltburn are all within easy driving distance.
